Attempting to rocker

im attempting to reverse camber my old scratch BCs, ive had the clamped together like this for a full day now, now im adding low heat via a wood stove,  will prolly add heat for like 2 hours a day for a week or so.  anyone tried this, any suggestions?  please dont clutter this with "youre gonna ruin your skis"  because i clearly dont care about these skis as they were, and i really just want something that is gonna slay narrow tree lines on Big Jay, and a 176 rockered scratch BC would be mint.

i clamped them right in front of the toes and roght behind the heels and between the bindings too, made sure the pressure points were even, and jammed a bible between the tips and another book between the tails.  im hoping jesus help will give me the desired shape

like 150 degrees or so i think, not too sure, ill throw a thermometer next to the skis and check it out

I'd say that you need more heat and you need to set the skis up for more of a rocker than you want. The ski's tendency is to bounce back to their normal position and by the way you have them set up and the heat you're using I don't think it will be enough. Try to get your hands on a heat gun if possible.

cant get a heat gun, would a pvc bending wrap work do you think?  one of those things you strap around pvc and it heats the pipe so you can bend it in like 3 minutes, im just worried about putting too much heat on them and ruining the base.  i also plan on gradually sliding the rocker wider and wider every day

I've never used one of those. It may work just be careful with it because I believe at about 280 degrees bases start to burn (depending on what material it is) so you don't want to go hotter than that.

i wouldn't rocker the tail unless you are landing switch in pow, the tails are gonna turn to jello on them and you will wheelie out

it will get hotter than that. but i suggest making morerocker with books becuz i think it is going to go down a lot when u take the books out

haha i was way off on the temp, my thermometer only goes up to 175 and it jumped up to that in like 30 seconds, that was like 4 inches from the srface of the stove.  the skis sat about a foot and a half away for an hour then i turned them and let the other ski sit near the stove for an hour.  im trying to keep everything as even as possible so they dont camber differently

hes got a good point about the ski tending to bounce back.  But its really good idea and i would probably do the same thing as you if i had the skis for it.  good luck

^yeah, im gonna slowly spread them wider and wider, maybe add a second bible eventually, i dont wanna spread them too wide right off cause i think the core would get really weak and snap easily, this way i think the core will slowly stretch and bend and maintain strength

Something that i just want to add in because i couldn't tell from the picture, was if you still had your brakes together on the skis (although i'm sure that u either removed them or strapped them up) the reason for this is because when the brakes are put together for the skis to hold each other, one ski is slightly above the other ski and so you will receive and un-equal flex pattern between the two skis if they are connected while you are trying to rocker them.                                                                                                                                                     But what do i know thats just my 2 cents

UPDATE

the BCs were a little too stiff to take, they flattened out a bit, but i also got lazy and didnt heat them as much as i should have...but...i tried the same method with a pair of 2nd gen fujis, they flattened out in like 5 minutes.  i left them clamped and wedged for a week, they pull apart a little over an inch at the rise of the nose and about a half at the rise of the tail.  i rode them a few times in powder and they float so nicely over pillows and stuff, rode them a couple times in park and they deffinelty butter really well and its not a huge rocker so its not super noticable at speed and off jumps. 

so try this method with softer skis, stiff ones will require a lot of attention and effort with heating,  but my fujis are really fun to have in the quiver now and i dont believe they are going to snap, the integrity of the ski (if you htink fujis have integrity to start with) hasnt been harmed.

Rocker-ing skis is easy, it just takes some time, and the ability to wait for the finished product.

Here is what I did, and keep in mind, I kinda work for a ski company... so if I fuck up its no big loss.

1. Create some sort of jig.  placing a bible between 2 skis is inaccurate.  one ski make "take" better then the other, so build a jig.

2.  heat is your friend and your enemy.  SLOWLY HEAT!!!!!!!!!  Heat guns are needed, but a hair dryer could work in the right situation.

3.  Time.  let it cool, then heat it again, then let it cool, then heat it again.... you get the picture.

4.  add more rocker in the jig then you want, its gonna spring back some.

i owned a pair of melees and i also have hellbents.
a like 3 mm rocker is going to do noting for riding on powder but it might make a ski more buttery.

at the contact point of my steeze's in the tip the skis are about an inch and a half apart when put base to base, tails about an inch.


It makes a huge differance, doesnt lock the ski into the turn as much as a non rockered pair, and allows the ski to smear around much better.
