SO a few seasons ago, maybe even 2, I remember when most skis could be used all over the mountain, with the exception of deep snow for the most part. (sidenote: Im a firm believer that you can ride any ski anywhere, but totally understand that a fat ski makes a difference, so dont get too worked up.) So an all mountain ski a few seasons ago had a waist of about 83 - 87 mm's. TOPS!!! and everyone was super happy with that. NOOOOW when you see posts about all mountain skis; which lets be honest, a very small few of you will ever leave a roped area ever! people are saying you cant ride the whole hill on an average sized park ski wich a few seasons ago was about 78mm's, which is now about avg of 85 mm's. Whats that all about? so my real question here is... has everyone just gotten lazy or can no one actually ski anymore orrrrrrrr has ski technology (and i use the term lightly) made it too easy? IM just wondering because I see alot of posts on here about this, and its kind of starting to make me wonder if I shouldnt just snowboard and avoid the whole question all together.

Fat skis just make skiing all the goods there are to offer, more fun. The ONLY condition they seem to hurt the experience in is moguls.

People want to float, fat skis make that happen easier, and more often.

it's simple; people have realized that fatter skis are more fun to ride all around. 

I used to ski everywhere on public enemies. Then I got Pistols and decided I would never buy a ski skinnier. They are simply more fun, and no less practical, in my opinion

but how come people act like a ski that is like 80 in the waist wont do them for just about any ski day?
how many days really do you shred powder allllll day?
I remember not so long ago that some B2's were editors pick for BEST all mountain ski. and they were only like 76.

when skiing powder, too fat reduces fun. I dont want to really float on top of it, I want to be immersed in it!
Some skis are just so damn fat its pretty stupid.

ya totally. Agree.
however, you can (and I do when im not on my JJ's) hit it super hard even when its like that on a narrower ski. I think my ar5s are like 79 or something... maybe? I dont remember. Theyre true center and I stil have no problem when the snow gets to be like say knee deep. its hard work sure, but doable.
hmm possibly not best question of the century.

The dimensions of ALL skis have increased, thus causing a fat ski, to be fatter than a fat ski a few years back.

This is to cater to what buyers and the industry want and enjoy skiing on.

dude you can do that on any pair of skis...
you can do it on 60 mm harts if you wanted

skis have gotten huge, when the fat ski phenomenon started in the early 90's everyone was upset. "It ruined the art of carving", "its for old people" "you can't rip bumps, steeps, or crud on anything short and fat." I was among them, well finally we all tried fatter and shorter skis. well kind of shorter. I remember rocking some 193 seth morrisons in 96 or so, so maybe the shorter length came later for me. I am 5' 7" and we use to put your arm in the air and where your wrist was would be the ski length you would use. I always a longer ski. But nonetheless I have grown to enjoy a fat ski and everyone should ski a ski they like. I do however agree that the lost art of carving a 210 straight ski is leaving, but look at all sports, car racing, motorcycle racing, all make drastic changes in technology to allow for the easier control of a piece of gear. This is to allow a more professional performance in any given aspect of a sport. I know I can carve a 210 straight downhill ski so i am ok with rocking a 178 pow ski this year.

fat skis makes everything overall funner not to mention they are pretty much an advantage on enything except moguls (which they still shred fine)

i totally agree with you. everyone is a believer that you cannot ski powder if your skis arent at least 95mm in the waist. im a cheap bastard and dont want to buy several pairs of skis so all i ride is my 171 invaders. now i ride these in the park, in the tree's, on the steeps, doing drops and skiing in 3 feet of snow and they work just fine. you just have to know how to use them.
Hell i went catskiing last year for 2 days and rode my 159 public enemies from 04/05! the snow was past my waist and i was doing fine and having fun on my pe's. fat skis were not necessary. hell the guides skis were no wider then 90 at the waist and she was an amzing pow skier and rode almost every day in at least 2 feet of fresh.
I fear that alot of people now are not going to be as good of powder skiers as previous generations because they dont have to work as hard and develop some parts of pow skiing. because there are certain aspects of skiing you cannot do them same on superfat skis.
I dare all you powder hounds with your superfats to take your park skis in the pow next season.

where are you from? if there is pow, i will ALWAYS ski it ALL day.

If you are at a small mountain that gets very tracked and has no out of bounds to ride ( generally BS, unless its eastcoast and you didnt really get pow anyways), then i would bring two skis and when shit gets tracked, go down to the car and get park skis.

The fact that you say you say there is nothing wrong with skiing centermounted 80mm skis on a good pow day, leads me to believe that youve never had a real pow day and you ski pow like a sissy.

once again where are you from? This really could explain a lot.

i think the companies try and make their pow skis the coolest so people buy them stupidly but i also believe that people buy fatter skis as a reason to visit resorts that get pounded with snow regularly

Letely ive been overwhelmed/confused about skis. There are so many choices... does it really matter? Ive demo'd a lot of skis, and they are all a bit different sure, but after half a day i can ski any of them about as well as any other...

I think people are wayyy too concerned about equipment, its all marketing...

Yeah, progression you archaic tool, it's called a quiver. My Hellbents are going to compliment my old Dynastar Bigs my Prophet 100's and my AR6's, a time and a place for each ski, depending on the conditions and the riding style I want for that day. Hell I'll probably sw skis at lunch sometimes. Your mind is narrower than my first pair of skis.
