It's already destroyed 50+ homes and will no doubt take more. Out my N.Shore window I can see the 200' flames when they flare up and the tower of smoke looks like an atomic bomb. Good luck to all those down there. I know a lot of people are packing up and fearing the worst.
Im sorry, but you are a douchebag. A lot of the time fires are natural. In this case, it was some asshole with a cigarette(I still don't understand why people can be so careless to throw cigarettes out and litter). You can't tell people to not build their homes in forests. Pretty much everything was forest except for the great plains and desert and even those can get really bad fires. when you tell people not to build their homes in a forest, you're pretty much telling them not to build a home in almost all of the western us, and a lot of florida too.
That really sucks though. My prayers go out to all the people and firefighters there that they can stop the fires and that there will be a ton of rain. We had some really bad fires in south georgia and north florida that burned a MILLION acres of forest. Thankfully, most of it was swampland and not too many people were left homeless. We even had smoke in atlanta and we are probobly 300 miles away. It sucks that so many people have already lost their homes at tahoe. Hopefully it gets better.
being evacuated has to be one of the scariest things.
i got evacuated 3 times living in tahoe. .. it's part of the reason why my parents moved down to the valley.
i personally know a few people who lost their homes. i wish there was something i could do to help.
Word. I'm from Montana too, but I can't remember the last time a fire here destroyed 225 structures and a frickin school. Still, if the forest was that ready to torch, it was going to at some point, even if that guy hadn't dropped his cig.
the high school actually has a huge barrier around it, so it hasn't burnt yet.. wrong info from the tribune website.. i just went and saw it.. the sky is soooooooo smokey and ashy
i'm sure they were well aware that their houses were being built in an area that is suseptible to wild fires.. it's just like people building their houses on the coast(being suseptible to tidal waves) or in the south (tornatos). in a valley (floods) no matter where you live, i'm sure your house is suseptible to some sort of natural disaster. to say that houses shouldn't be built in tahoe is kind of ignorant.
and i think some people on here need to watch what they say because, to many, this is a very emotional time. nobody deserves to have there house and pets burnt to the ground. and now the high school is burning i heard? and the hospital is less than a mile from that.. my mom is working there right now and said it has been one of the most depressing days she has ever had. over a dozen of her friends lost their homes.
ah shit, this thing is crazy. I had to deliever bread to SLT at like 2 this morning for work, I they wouldn't let me even drive around out their. this thing is seriously out of hand though, I just finished helping my friend evacuate, and I don't his house is going to make it.
whats the difference between a cigarette and a strike of lightning? That forest is ready to burn, it's wahts going to happen. No one is saying DON'T build your house in a forest, it's just that you shoulden't bitch about your house burning down if you did.
Likewise you wouldent feel pitty for a guy who built his house in the middle of the desert and complained about being thursty.. it was his choice, nature > man, we have to live around/with nature and it's consequences not above it
holy shit, thats insane. Do people not clean up the forests down there or what? CAuse damn, that is wack. See if you dont have forest fires regularly, you get that kind of buildup, UNLESS people come in and clear it out themselves.
man I dunno.....pretty sure tahoe hasnt had any large scale efforts to improve the situation. Something tells me that after this that will change.
I lived in the mountains outside of Boulder and we would spend a least a week a year going to town with chainsaws and such around our house. Pain in the ass, but always felt a little safer afterwards. We only had one serious fire scare, and we were in Hawaii for it. My parents decided not to tell us until one day I stumbled upon a article on my dad's computer. scary stuff. stupid kids with fireworks. Luckly, only a few of many threatened houses burned.
This is going to get worse it sounds. I heard someone on TGR say that now the fire guys are saying it is 0% contained.....hopefully that is not the case. This situation sucks in every way.
and yeah, the forests around N. America need a ton of work to make them healthier and to help ensure the safety of those who live there.
I know what you're trying to say, but get a clue, man. With your perspective and whacked reasoning so lacking of any sense of sympathy, I suppose everyone in SanFrancisco should pack up and leave, because they're living under a serious threat of earthquakes. Likewise, anyone along the southeast coast should move to avoid hurricanes. For that matter, anyone along the coasts should move because of tsunami danger. Seattle people should get out of there because Rainier could erupt and send out a deadly lahar flow. No one should live in the midwest because of the tornado dangers. When tens of thousands die from monsoons in Southeast Asia because they live in low-lying areas, they should have seen it coming.
You know what? Most places--especially cool places--have some element of natural danger. Yes, people knew there was potential for devastation living in the forests of Tahoe. But they simply hope nothing like this will happen, and that all steps will be taken to prevent it. What's your solution? Clear cut everything on the lake?
Find me a place that's completely safe from avalanches, floods, fire, earthquakes, whatever nature can dish out, and I'll see a place that's probably boring as hell. If that's where you live, well, I have some sympathy for you.
no no no i'm not saying don't live there, i'm saying just recognize that you are living with mother nature, and you're not above her. It means that you've gotta accept the dangers that exist wherever you call home, and not be all OMG THE HILLS BE ON FIREE PLZ HELP!! you've gotta be ready to pack your shit move out of the way and accept that you live in a place of great beauty and that in order for the area to remain as beautiful as it is, you might have to sacrifice your material goods
I do agree with people saying you have to expect it but that is all...i definitely feel that people should live there because who wouldnt...its a beautiful place
its not just that, homes are replaceble. The ash could turn Lake Tahoe dirty as fuck and thats what really worries me. It is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been in my life; I don't want it to be relegated to the past tense.
as of 3 hours ago a family friends place was within 5 blocks of the fire. they were up here for a wedding and cant go home. They couldn't pack anything up. so sad
I'm sorry for all of you that are effected by this situation. But some people did bring up some good points. A fire of this magnitude if it started from a cigarette was bound to happen anyway. The conditions right now are prime for fires. Development is the real reason this fire has become so uncontrollable. As people build more homes in an area you restrict the natural processes that go on in nature. Most forests will have small fire events that burn the brush on the floor and clean up brush and downed wood. Development restricts these "crawling fires" and there becomes an excesses of fuel in the system. Now with excessive amounts of brush on the forest floor you get a situation that when a small brush fire starts it becomes a crown fire and burns everything and is able to spread quickly. Most Forest fires are very healthy for an ecosystem, but unfortunately not so healthy for people homes. I'm sure most people in the area knew there was some risk of wild fires, but they were not aware of the magnitude of a fire they have been setting them selfs up for. It doesn't seem like knew they have a responsibility to clear brush in their own yards and towns. There also needs to be controlled burns to help clear brush. This defiantly becomes hard due to over development for where i heard the fire started thats an area that is heavily developed. Basically all I'm saying is that people need to become more in-tune with their surroundings and allow nature to have some small fires that will prevent the big ones like this. Its sad but its was inevitable that this was going to happen given the circumstances of whats little has been done to prevent it.
yea sorry, i was one of the assholes that siad something shitty. Hope everyone is safe and my apologies for anyone that is effected by this and is dealing with it. This shit is real folk and i hope dem fires stop soon...
All is not nearly lost yet man. The fire/burn area is still contained to 4 sq miles southwest of SLT, and shouldn't even reach the lake itself. Sure it is spewing out some heavy ash right now, I have no doubt that a deep cycle lake like Tahoe will clean itself up pretty quickly. Yes there there will be a scar, but I think the main hurt will be felt with the people who lost their residences, and the tourist industry over the next few months. Vive la Tahoe
my friends took those pictures.... definitely amazing
my friend's mom has been fighting this for YEARS with the TRPA. it's bull shit. she knew it was coming. she has all the records for trying to get this taken care of and nobody would do anything about it. now her house is gone, along with 200 others! if they had been more prepared this probably wouldn't have been such a huge catastrophe.
i just spent the past hour and a half at the meeting for this.....
Tahoe's ecosystem is dependent upon the fires, and the fires actualy bring about a more diverse, more beautiful tahoe. With all the old and dead burned away new life will have a chance to spring up. Even if it was caused by some dude and his cigarette, fire in that region is inevitable and nessisary.
Im tired of reading all of the enviromental shit people are talking about. You guys make me sick.
Yes forest fires are good for the tahoe REGION. Not the whole godamn place. Do you realize that the part of Tahoe that is burning is probably not benefitting from it at all. Its developed meaning THERE IS LITTLE OR NO FOREST ON IT aside from maybe a few acres. Most of the kids who are even saying this shit live in the east coast and have no clue. Not to sound like a bleeding heart liberal but please, peoples houses and lives are potentialy being ruined and all you can say is " its good for the enviroment". I hope your houses burn down you fuckwads.
wow those pictures with the fire are absolutely amazing. too bad its such a disaster they actually look really cool...except for that one with the burning house and car...+++ vibes to everyone out there, good luck.
fires should be natural. they shouldn't have supressed fires for the past 150 years. if they had let small fires burn more often, there wouldnt be huge fires like we have today.
put your fucking ciggs out!! another fire started in south lake today at stateline behind the casinos. it didn't get very far because of the millions of firefighters around that area right now.. but seriously, people are idiots.
i just read that more people are being evacuated from their homes. 1000 people earlier evacuated..and now more are.
if you guys have questions, you should talk to NS member ridetahoe. he fought the fire for the first 36hrs. and is going back in soon.
Wow. Just when thing seemed better, they've suddenly gone way downhill. The fire jumped a line and is now raging "out of control" according to 8 News. It's gone over Highway 89 and is racing towards Tallac Village, Camp Richardson and all kinds of homes and the lake, including the Keys. Bad, bad news.
Someone on TGR said that the roads were just mayham in the area around the new evacuations. I guess it was just a mad house of people trying to get out. Hopefully they all do. I guess a lot of them have already been evacuated once, allowed to go back, and now this.
