Where do you see your sport in 5years?
It seems like everything rightnow is steering towards park pipe rails but all that crap is a fad like balletskiing once everyone learns to actually ski I am sure this will be longforgotten.

And as for his comment he's wrong, but mostly everyone is going to say that. It'll stay around, it will be a major factor. Racing, Big Mountain, Freeskiing, and Rec. Sking, the big 4. They'll all stay major.

jumps will never die, its been the base of freeski, rails won't fade because snowboarding will keep them alive, as long as snowboarding jibs rails, so will skis. Plus ski ballet was like a fancy version of butters and screamin seaman's so we evolved from ballet there fore we cant fade out like it, only evolve into something more interesting

Well seeing as how most of the big time riders nowadays film all over the place (backcountry, park, pipe, in town) anyway, it's already true that just being good at park is obsolete and in no way valuable to a ski career.

yeah, thats not gonna happen, what about the eas coast? what about shitty winer like the last 1? i wish i could ski something else than park for a good part of my season. although i try my best to get to some good skiing every year, i hope lake placid (northstar area if i've got the lake name right) is good for next season, then i'll hit up the bc, but for the rest of my season, it's my shitty little park

yeah we've heard that many times. actually, the most prevalent fad in skiing probably is bashing park/pipe! i had thought that had died out 2 or 3 years ago and people had started to see whats going on, or just given up..but i guess i was wrong.

yeah, but then again everyone can do a straight air and slide a box. just cuz "everybody" can ski pow, doesnt mean they make it look good.

Park is always going to be a part of skiing no matter how hard some people try to bash it because on the east coast that is all we have so i cannot possibly see it dying out.

it will NEVER die...think about it...there will always be the small little hills where the only thing that kids have as an option to them is either ski down the bunny hill...or ski in the park...there arent alot of options for the majority of skiers out there...myself being a perfect example...i dont have the option to go and shred big mountain lines and wasit deep pow at my local hill...if i want to do any REAL skiing at all...i would have to drive like an hour and a half to get there. with gas the way it is...that is another cut off to people being accesable to what people like this guy usually skis...people that think that everyone that is a park rat is a shitty skier and doesnt diserve rcognition is ignorant....most of us park rats dont have the choice, the fact of the matter is we ski.you ski.we are all skiers.so why seperate us all?

Is that a rhetorical question? It's kind of dying in movies, just like ski movies....with all BC and urban rails...but park riding with snowboarding as a whole isn't dead at all...

i think ns thinks ryan is a fag that wishes he could ski park. most kids that ski park *atleast where i ski* can do it all, but choose to ski park because it is more fun & seriously how much fun are cliff drops to ice? you only get so many powder days a yr.

ryan oakden may have just made the dumbest comment i have ever heard... jumps, rails, park skiing is the most expressive form of skiing in many peoples mind, and its something that doesnt just fade away. also he says " when people learn to ski" park skiing, jumping, rails ect. is skiing, and as long as there are parks and shit out there people will be skiing them... he is a douchebag..

5-6 years, i say more like 1-3. in terms of beeing a "pro" at least. it is coming to the point that if you want to be at the top you need to be ably to shred the entire mountain. yeah it sucks that some people live in the midwest and don't have mountains, but to that then i say you better understand the technical aspect of skiing. being able to acutaly turn and dare i say be able to race. sure you all bag on racers, but racers can fucking ski. then when you have the chance to ski in the west or at mountains you will be able to.

and to the person who said skiing pow is easy, i beg to differ. sure it is fun and can be easy once you have it down, but it takes time to get good at skiing pow. it is a whole different ballgame than skiing park your entire life in the east. i would say though that poe is the best part of skiing.

that's not true at all.  there are soooooo many skiiers who can rip the park but can't do shit outside of it, let alone back country.  I've found that a decent amount of the time, the riders who own the park get owned outside of it.

I dont think so, as long as people are still doin crazy shit on rails and in the pipe itll stay alive. but you probably also need a good base in actuall skiing to get really good

^^ Kent is doing quite well and he will apreciate your concern. After some sick days with High North in Valdez in late spring with Jim Morrison and other Tahoe "expired pros" he has been working with Jim and Brad while boating and boozing in Tahoe.

Next time I run into him, possibly this afternoon, he is doing some contracting work for Jim in Truckee, I will tell him how much you miss him and how his career has ended...I am sure he will regret his "ended career" and his 100+ day season spent this year traveling all over the world skiing without the stupid pressure of park/x-games BS.

Those of us who have moved beyond park have not had our careers "end" as you may think, our connections and enjoyment has increased as we get to slide down hills most of your only dream of without any of the BS younger pros have to put up with.

Go ahead, ask any young pro where they want to be when they are 35...the answer, skiing in Valdez with your best friends every spring and living in Tahoe when your not.

so yeah, life sucks when your "career" has ended

I think skiing will be similar to snowboarding in the sense that there will be times of high popularity for the park and rails and then lows...in the early 90's everyone was jibbing on everything in snowboarding...then the mid to late 90's it was 1/4 pipes, BC jumps or nothing...then jp walker and friends showed up and brought rails back to the forefront...it will ebb and flow...but never go away.

u say racers can actually ski, but dude sking isnt just turning ect. its everything. its urban rails, big mtn, park skiing, racing, skiblading in ur backyard.. i hate it when people look at a kid in the park and say "oh sure he can slide some rails and hit some jumps but can he actually ski."
but skiing is soo cool because theres so much room for everyone to do thier own thing, i hate it when these douche bags like ryan oakden come in and try to tie all skiers together. when the truth is every skier is different than the next and thats why everyone should ski in the first place, to be creative and have fun, because skiing has no rules to follow..

i think that you should actualy go up the left and not walk the park all day so that you can be a good rounded skier


big mountian parks would be kick ass you would be skiing big mountian and park at the same time and having a shit lot of fun

thats the future of skiing if there is still any snow in 10 years

i agree.

i would also like to add my 2 cents: look at skateboarding and bmx, both have different types of riders/skaters. some only ride park, some street, some vert, some pools, & for bmx some only dirt jump. it also seems that those sports aren't really concerned as much with what other people are doing. i think that's how it should be with skiing.

ryan is a fag for his comment & needs to stop worrying about other kids and what they are doing. people will always ride park and if that is all they will ever do then i am happy for them because that is what they like.

all i gotta say is that newschool skiing was originally a park sport. so therefore, park will always be here, or else its not newschool skiing. the park is here for helping you get better at urban/bc shit. its where you learn something (in many cases) then take it to urban rails or backcountry shit. park is fun tho, itll never not be fun to me as long as stuff is still setup good.

ummmm, yeah exactly. you see i was making the point as to that pro's need to be able to ski the entire mountian, or as you say be able to ski pow, rails, park, ect. my point is that if you come from a place where all you have is park, and you never were tought the way to ski, when you are put in a gnarly spot on a nountain you might not be able to ski it as well as the kid who raced and then took up park. I am in no way saying that kids who just ski park arent' skiers. all my point was was that if you want to be a pro in the freeskiing world you better be able to ski the entire mountain. park, pipe, pow ect. i just feel that people who can't lay out 70mph super g turns, hit big booters, slide rails, hit cliffs, bumps, pow, ect, will be overlooked by companies for that kid who can.


sooooo, as you even said there is a lot of different types of skiing and if all you do is slide boxes all day and hit your 20ft jumps in the midwest, take a day off from the park and go ski some slalom turns, then perhaps hit up the bumps. all i'm saying is that if you never get out of the park, your ability will not be as great as the kid who does. not that that doesnt' make you a skier.

god im tired of these big mountain only pros giving park crap. if it werent for park skiing our sport would of never had the newschool revolution that has helped it so much. i agree that your not gonna get far if all u can is ski park but unfortuently for people that live on the east coast or the midwest like me there relly isnt any big mountain options. so basically ryan oakden is telling me that no matter how good i am at park(which is basically the only options for newschool skiing where i live) i should just give it up instead of waiting for some big mountain options when im older and becoming more of a all around skier.
doesnt sound right to me.
