i dont know but a lot of people who i have talked to say it isnt that much, like nothing to live on, exept tanner who makes somethign like 200 grand a year (said on freeskier site or something awhile ago) im nots sure though
If you are a top tier pro you have a few different channels to make a living from. Retainers pay either a monthly amount or allow you to draw cash from a "pool" of money. You can get these from goggle companys, outerwear, skis, ect. Also, when you win comps some of your sponsors may match a percentage of winnings. Free product and modest travel budgets are what 85% of the "pros" out there get. Gravity Games payed out $20,000 for first in pipe and slopestlye. I assume TJ's sponsors (Orage, Armada, Red, ect) matched that so he could have made another 50-80K in addition to the 20K he won in slopestyle. As a teenager it is a lot of money but these kids need to put it away b/c many don't have an education and they will not be making that kind of money in 5 years. Guys like tanner who started buying real estate are playing it right.
yes, people like tanner make a good deal of flow, but they are the best.
average pro= $7,000=20,000 a year (short lived too)
many of these talented skiers think skiing is all you have to do. but lets face it, only 3 positions are available for recognition at the majority of contests. sure, your BRO earned 12 place at the Open and can't stop talkin' about it, but the sponsors don't consider that top selling/marketing of their product; unless he/she is 15 and a will earn top three sometime soon; so they invest some flow into them.
If the best your gonna do is "12th", you need to be marketing yourself in other ways (i.e. film, articles, photos, etc.) Here is another way of lookin' at it: Eric Pollard or Sage Cattebriga enters the US Open and don't even qualify for the semi's. They know this isn't their game and so they diversify their bonds by gettin' dope film segs, photos published in every mag, articles written, ads placed, etc. Although they are some the styliest skiers around, they know they have to put it in front of the camera.
My post is suckin'. Oh ya, people like Eric, Sage, and Brad Holmes, just happen to be in the right place at the right time.
I think it is more than that... At least for the top names like tanner or candide. How much does oakley win because the top skiers use A-Frames? They must be giving a LOT on contracts. Do you know how much Tiger Woods gets from nike just to wear a nike hat and a nike shirt? I'm not sayin it is the same, but oakley and those must be payin a lot to the riders annually.
I don't think that comparing Bode to freeskiers is a fair comparison, and we need to stop doing it.
The top snowboarders make more than the top freeskiers and no one makes that comparison. And freeskiers have their body a lot more on the line than any of the big pro sports. Freeskiers don't make a lot but until the market grows, they'll never make much.
Here's where I'll step on my podium...a lot of people rip on "posers" who have newschool gear but aren't that great of skiers. If you discourage people from supporting freeskiing, then the market will never grow. And all you guys who want to be pros will never have the chance because the sport will always be too small. Look at skateboarding, soooo many kids have skateboards and about 85% of them can't kickflip. But look at how fortunate the industry is because of it. There are sooo many sponsored skaters (some say too many) as the result of a booming industry.
Like 2 years ago i was talkin to jordan monk at my cuz's wedding, hes ones of my cuzs good friends, and he told me he got 3 grand a year plus traveling expenses and somthing like 500 to 2000 dollars for pics in mags depending on the pic, and he isnt even really regarded as a pro
Merse you sexy potatoe you better be doing some thing fucking crazy up there, see yea soon br-ah
Too many Rookies not enough PROS !!!
807 Army 4life
you guys are all retarted and should shut up unless you actually are getting paid or know somebody well because every one of you kids up there is dead wrong, and no pro will release the real amount of money they are paid because it is against their contracts...
I have a reliable source in the film industry now and knows the Dumont. Its all bout image if you are popular-you keep your image positive and solid then you will make more money. Tanner could be making a lot more if it werent for his image. As to the exact numbers I dont know but guys like tanner jon candide wilson dumont are doin pretty well for themselves. Image is VERY key for sponsorship when you get as popular as these guys and they like it when you "cooperate."
Sportin' the bath robe steeze.
NO BRIAN, its I before E except after C, an when sounding like a in a neighbor in weigh and on weekends and holidays and all through out may and you'll always be wrong n
Everybody is sayin that think that appeared on freeskier that "your sponsor will match the prize money" and stuff, and I guess thats true, but it is obviously not the only way they get paid. For example, one of the top snowboarders is JP walker, and he is nver on comps. He's just on videos and mags, but he is one of the most famous and best snowboarders, I'm sure he has a hughe contract full of zeros just for being with his sponsors cause it sells so much (Nixon, Forum, Special Blend, Oakley, Circa,
Bakoda, Premier SnowSkates, Zoo York, MiloSport).... man those r a lot of sponsors, and some of the best. I'm sure they pay him an annual huge salary, plus all the extras like videos, appearences on mags and stuff.
OK i talked to a huge rep for line when he was at my shop and he said guys like dash make maybe 15-20K a year and dash isnt doing too bad. Guys like Wilson make maybe 50, tanner makes a good bit but hte average pro doesnt make as much as your 40 hour a week 8 dollar an hour guy....
and the president makes around 450K a year you fuck bags
