The High Fives Non-Profit Foundation's Winter Empowerment Fund - Program Service allocates donated funds to athletes that have applied for and been approved by the Board of Directors - Grant Selection Committee for a specific grant to assist in recovery from a life altering injury. On December 22, 2011 Jake Hickman crashed while competing at a U.S. Freestyle Ski Team - Selection Competition. The impact caused a spiral compression fracture of Jake's T8 vertebrae with an incomplete paralysis of the spinal cord. As with all athletes that the High Fives Foundation assists, Jake has shown a drive and a sense of positivity in his recovery that is absolutely inspiring. His work ethic and "can-do" attitude light up the room as he demonstrates on a daily basis his determination to return to the sport he loves. The High Fives Foundation provided Jake with rehabilitative healing therapies such as Physical Therapy with Scott Williams (P.T.) of Synergy Therapeutics, Acupuncture with Tyler Lapkin (L.Ac), Massage Therapy with Karen Stubbs (L.M.T.) and one on one training with Chris Cloyd (Fitness Director - Performance Training Center by Julia Mancuso). These therapies along with time spent in the gym, with his TRX Suspension Training System and on the trails would not be possible without the generosity of 81 (and counting) donors that have directly contributed to this up and coming ski star. The High Fives Non-Profit Foundation (Truckee, CA), recently completed the first chapter in what is known as ‘The Landon McGauley Project.’ A 15 year old skier and downhill mountain biker from Quesnel, British Columbia, Landon was involved in a mountain biking accident which left the young athlete paralyzed from the waist down due to a T-5 spinal injury . Landon: “My goal was to be able to get back on the mountain in a sit ski this winter. Now, the ultimate goal is to pursue my dream of competing in the Olympics in 2014.” From January 5-10, 2011 the High Fives Non-Profit Foundation provided an amazing trip for Landon and his family parents to Olympic Valley, CA and Alpine Meadows Ski Resort. The High Fives Winter Empowerment Fund funded the trip by securing transportation by Truckee Tahoe Transportation Inc., lodging at the Resort at Squaw Creek, adaptive lessons with Disabled Sports USA FarWest (Alpine Meadows) with Bill Bowness (a two-time paralympic medalist, respectively), Smith Optics goggles and helmet, a pair of Volkl Bridge skis, Superlite Outriggers (adaptive ski poles) and a brand new sit-ski from Freedom Factory. This great story has just begun, with the support of his loving family, friends, his home mountain of Troll Ski Resort (Quesnel, BC) and the High Fives Non-Profit Foundation the next chapter is ready to be written.

A High Fives Weekend in Vermont

by HighFives
Mar 2012 - 584 views

Thursday, March 8, 2012 the High Fives Non-Profit Foundation ventured across the country to the Mad River Valley in Vermont for a series of events called ?A High Fives Weekend? at Sugarbush Resort. With the help of Vermont North Ski Shop and Sugarbush Resort, the High Fives Foundation was able to present the ?B.A.S.I.C.S. Prevention and Awareness Program? to four different groups, reaching over 1,000 kids, and run a successful ?Fat Ski-a-Thon? with over 40 participants. High Fives traveled East with Roy Tuscany and Steve Wallace to put on the weekend and present the B.A.S.I.C.S. program to the Mad River Valley. The weekend?s events kicked off at 7:45am on Friday with the ?B.A.S.I.C.S. Prevention and Awareness Program? at Waitsfield Elementary School with over 100 kids in attendance. Following the presentation the kids asked great questions, and as young winter sports enthusiasts, each student seemed to take something from the presentation. High Fives? next stop that afternoon was Fayston Elementary School, which also saw over 100 attentive students with equally good questions. Saturday was a day of recreation as Win Smith and Sugarbush Resort provided the High Fives Foundation and Vermont North Ski Shop employees with early lift access to enjoy the fresh 10 inches of snow that had fallen the previous night. After the day of powder skiing High Fives Foundation headed to the Castlerock Pub at Sugarbush Resort to present the ?B.A.S.I.C.S. Prevention and Awareness Program? to a group of over 100 skiers of all ages. Early on a sunny Sunday morning, the High Fives Foundation and Vermont North Ski Shop employees arrived at Mount Ellen/Sugarbush Resort to begin setup for the ?Fat Ski-a-Thon.? Over 40 people showed up to register for the event that had participants skiing as many runs as possible on the Summit Quad from 9am to 3pm. Donations were collected in advance by participants either on a per lap basis, or as a flat rate. After a long day of skiing, Harwood High School students Evan Theurer and Johnny Egan tied for the most runs with 33, and Chris Parkinson got the award for the most money raised with $1,690.00, all going to the High Fives Non-Profit Foundation. The weekend was capped off with one final ?B.A.S.I.C.S. Prevention and Awareness Program? at Harwood High School in Moretown, VT. The presentation saw around 700 high school students, and for such a large crowd, the auditorium was silent during the presentation. Founder of High Fives Foundation, Roy Tuscany graduated from Harwood in 1999 and was honored to present the B.A.S.I.C.S. program to his alma mater. The High Fives Non-Profit Foundation would like to send out a huge thank you to Vermont North Ski Shop and Sugarbush Resort, as ?A High Fives Weekend? at Sugarbush Resort never would?ve been possible without their efforts. The weekend?s events ended up raising over $15,000.00, which will be allocated to assist athletes who suffer a life altering injury work toward their respective recovery goals. The Landon McGauley Project | Chapter Five

by HighFives
Aug 2012 - 120 views

The Landon McGauley Project is an on-going mission of the High Fives Winter Empowerment Program Service. High Fives Athlete: Landon, a 17-year-old downhill mountain biker from Quesnel, B.C. Canada suffered a paralyzing spinal cord injury during a race on July 4, 2010. With the help of the High Fives Foundation, the highly motivated young athlete, Landon is pursuing a dream of making the Canadian Paralympic Ski Team and competing in the 2014 Sochi, Russia Paralympic Games. August 5-9, 2012 the High Fives Foundation took a group Winter Empowerment Fund Athletes to San Clemente, CA to learn the sport of adaptive surfing at San Onofre State Park's "Dog Patch" beach. Landon McGauley, and a handful of other athletes traveled with the Foundation and a media team to Southern California for their first ever Adaptive Surf Camp. A consistent 3-6' swell delivered gorgeous sets of waves for the talented team to discover new muscle memory skills on Infinity Waveskis (sit down waveskis). With an all-star cast of adaptive surf community members on hand to show everyone the ropes, the three days spent on the water went by way too fast. The inaugural trip helped expand the reach of the Foundation by providing a new outlet for those that suffer a life altering injury. Additionally the skills learned are transferable to winter action sports and will help in the recovery process of all involved in the great sport of adaptive surfing. Overall, it was great to re-connect with Landon and keep in line with his goal of making the podium in the Paralympic Games. Stay tuned for more updates on the Landon McGauley Project... Apr 2012 - 83 views

The 2012 Arcade Belts | High Fives Foundation Skinny Ski-a-Thon was a great success thanks to the 50+ participants that got pledges per lap skied on Squaw Valley's infamous KT-22! Also, a huge "thank you" goes out to Arcade Belts, Squaw Valley, Fireside Pizza, Smith Optics, GoPro, Snocru.com, BodyArmor, Tahoe Made Attire as well as Rom and Nick Marcucci. A snowy day did not prevent all that participated from enjoying themselves while pushing it to the limit on archaic equipment and skiing as many laps as possible to raise money for the High Fives Foundation. The animal known as GTL or (Greg Lindsey) succeeded in skiing 46 laps to take the crown as this year's best skier. His efforts not only took Cody Townsend off the thrown (last year's champ) but also helped solidify the Skinny Ski-a-Thon as an event to watch for in years to come. Thank you for your support.
