Heard it from me first, folks

So... Apparently these are the details/spec for the brand new GoPro Hero 3 to be released soon. Black edition sounds rad, 120fps @ 720p.

"The HD Hero 3 is a huge step ahead of the HD Hero 2. People are going to love these cameras. We will offer three models; the HD Hero 3 White Edition, Silver Edition and Black Edition. We will have three price points, and all three models have WiFi Built into them. They all share a new form factor which is the same rectangular shape (which lends itself to be mounted anywhere, including the Chest), but it's much thinner than the HD1/ HD2. The HD Hero 3 + Backpack is the size of todays camera by itself. All three models will come shipped with the new housing which incorporates an underwater lens into the housing and an improved locking latch. The camera needs to work as well under the water as above the water since it's waterproof. We did have to go to the Micro SD Card format since SD Card Trays are way to big for this camera. There are ton of other improvements; I'll send out a Camera Comparison Sheet once we have that and are allowed to send images.

Camera Line Up:

HD Hero 3 White Edition - $199 Retail. This is basically an HD Hero 1 Camera (5mp photo sensor, etc.) that includes WiFi, dive lens and the new, thinner form factor. Available 10/21/12 to ship.

I bought my GoPro 2 literally 4 days ago, which kinda blows. Oh well. I got a super good deal on it.
Nevertheless: the GPB 3 sounds awesome. Can't wait to see what the big companies are going to be able to achieve with it.
Wondering if the IQ is going to be any better.

friends in the right places, know where to look, who to talk to and ask, where to post about it, etc.

It's awesome what you can piece together when everyone knows small little snippets of information (or in this case, someone found a whole lot of it). Maybe I should start my own camerarumors site....

Living in the US at the moment, so that's not gonna happen. Oh well, I don't really need any of the features in the new GoPro. The GoPro2 is very awesome too and it's not like I need 120fps to showcase all my epicness.

agreed, i guess it could be for a timelapse or something, but you could just use the photo function


reminds me of my first helmet cam... it was 320p 15fps and had terrible battery life... how far we've come...

Its super sick!..... but.... (not to be a hater) they are putting the technology in the wrong hands Its gonna be the same as the 2, Kids are gonna buy them and still throw some crappy vids together. that will still have terrible quality. The people that I know that shoot with a go pro DO not have any if the neccesary equipment to edit 2.7k!?

I definately think it is a pretty big but unfortunately it is used for the wrong doing.... I'm no professional and I can be blamed for using the gopro with dubstep and getting shaky shots.... and I agree you have to start somewhere but I just dont think they should be exposing these people to unrealistic things.

That would be like making a tricycle with rockets and then still having kids "step up" on to a regular bike. (if that makes sense)

Mayb I just have the wrong idea about it and I should think about the positive effects that profesionals can use it for or what it might bring in development for other cameras (dslrs and similar) but right now I see it as a bad thing :(

Sounds really sick, but is still probably going to be akward to mount on a helmet from what I gather, but is just thinner, I wish they went with a shape more like contour/ Sony AC.

Landis, it's minor upgrades to some, but a major upgrade to others. I work in the sports broadcasting industry and gopros are starting to become more and more integrated into productions. CBS uses them quite often in their basketball/hockey broadcasts. Amazing that you can cut between a $200,000 broadcast camera and a $300 gopro. I know the manual white balance will be a HUGE plus for any serious production, especially live events where you cant edit in post. You need to have all cameras white balanced exactly the same or it looks awkward. (at least i think it means manual white balance in the "advanced features")The new frame rates are also huge for instant replays on sports.

As far as it's use in skiing/other extreme sports, the 120 fps is obviously going to get overused. It does however open up possibilities for people to use it creatively.

I don't get it. Gopros are what, 99% geared towards people who have never even heard of premiere/fcp? 1080p is the only buzzword that matters to that market. What do they do with 4k? 4k is only relevant when you want your image to last for a few years. I guess you could crop your image and still be 1080p but that's really not going to accomplish anything with what a gopro does.

I doubt the 99% of gopro users cares where there footage is one year from now, not when 4k becomes the standard.

If gopro built a more functional camera to make their ads, give to ski producers they sponsor, i'd get it, but to put 4k out in a consumer form sounds like a waste.

All good points and the white balance feature seems to be the biggest improvement for sure. I guess I'm just disappointed that "huge announcement" was an overstatement on their part, especially considering that the GoPro2 was a much larger improvement than the GoPro3. I realize 4K is a buzzword right now, but it isn't an improvement in image quality (unless they release more detailed specs about their scaling algorithms that explain otherwise). Enlarging a turd doesn't make it any less of a turd.

Wifi is just stupid. My problem with digital cameras is that you're forced to pay for all these superfluous features when I'd rather buy a bare-bones system for a 6th of the price.

On the plus side, everyone will be selling used GoPro 2s. Perhaps I'll have a reason to sell my GoPro that's been collecting dust since I got it.

4k isn't going to be the standard in one year, its going to be at least 5 before 4k tvs are even in peoples houses. Its taken 1080p 2-3yrs to be the standard from 720p/1080i and that is a very small change.
