Gnarly Xray Images thread

At Rowen's suggestion, I'll start this thread off (even though I don't have an orange name).

Injury: Compression fractures at T4-5; incomplete spinal cord lesion.
How: DH biking. Bounced a landing and got tossed head-first into a tree.
When: October 2010
Surgeon work: spinal fusion T2-T8. Two rods, 12 screws + cadaver bone to help vertebrae fuse. (permanent)
Time to back on skis: 3 months, 7 days.

Injury: Broken femur.
How: DH biking. Overshot a big jump and landed flat.
When: September 2005
Surgeon work: 1 rod, 3 screws (removed after 6 months)
Time to back on skis: 10 weeks.

My leg, swollen. 2 inches bigger around the knee, 6 at mid thigh. My kneecap and knee sometimes gets dislocated when I adjust it because the tissue is so swollen its pushed the bones apart.


Warning: Man ass. Girls, take appropriate action as to not be overcome by the hotness, concentrate on the injury.

That hematoma continues around the other side of my leg, but Im not about to post a pic of my gooch. Its fully 2/3rds of my surface skin on my quad.

The true survivors, my Trew bibs. You can see on the ass where the rock hit. No torn fabric, nothing. My long underwear was dry down there when I got down to the bottom after sitting around snow for 2 hours... cant say that my non-Trew jacket did the same. Something you dont really think about, but this was a case when Trew's "overbuilt" features were fucking essential. That rock broke my femur, pulverized the back of my quad muscles, but couldnt rip my ski pants. Thank you rock, fate, and Trew Gear.

With the rod in place, I can actually put all my weight on that leg... doesnt feel good, but its stronger than my other leg it a lot of ways now apparently. Its the muscle thats around it thats real fucked, thats whats going to take the time to heal, the bones are already in place better than a cast can do.

i wish i kept the xrays of my wrist, broke my ulna ands radius playing soccer, i was puchin this one kid casue hes a little fuck and his gay butt buddy come running up and completly does a spirinting shoulder check from behind and i go flying like 10 feet and 5 feet in the air and all my weight lands straight on my right wrist, doctor said i was lucky it wasnt a compound (bone breaks skin) but it kinda looked like that other pic above just not bent only a giant lump. my ulna was lined up with the other part of my radius. didnt need surgery or anything just some gnarly pain meds and 5 attempts to reset the bones. finally got it on the 6th try. got a full arm cast for 3 weeks and was back skiing with a mid cast for another 4weeks. cool story i know

Very true. This story reminds me of earlier this year during thanksgiving break when me and my brother saved a kids life under Squaw Creek lift at Squaw Valley. He hit a roller in low light conditions and fell face first into 3ft of sierra cement...was buried and completely motionless with just his skis in the air when we arrived. He was just under the lift and almost died from suffocation..he was buried for about 10 minutes before we got there...the lift had just opened so not many people were riding this life, luckily a guy yelled to us at the top of the lift that there was a motionless person with their legs sticking up.....it took me and my brother a few minutes to bury him out and get him conscious again...Very scary shit..Ski patrol took 25 minutes to arrive on the scene after we had already got him out and breathing...if it wasn't for us getting there just in time he would have died no doubt...he wasn't doing anything crazy or extreme and almost suffocated right under the lift...we got there just in time to dig him out...Just goes to show how bad things can get...

He told us there was no doubt in his mind he was going to suffocate and that he gave up and passed out after 5 minutes of struggling to move....We exchanged numbers and will now have a life long friendship because of the events...this happened a day before thanksgiving, so there was ALOT to be thankful for.

Thanks for sharing, but I'm real sorry you got the chance. I hope that they can take the rod out later... it's much closer to the hip than mine was by the looks of it.

As for ski shapes you are researching during down time... what do you think about bottom/base rocker, like a boat? I hear someone else is doing it.

I dont want to spend the rest of my life finishing ski bases by hand, haha.

From the sound of it, the rod will stay, and they only remove the pins if they aggravate my muscles... so we'll see I guess.

I will never forget that sound of that bone breaking, ever. Kinda got patchy memories of that day, but I do remember every second of the fall and shouting "my fucking femur is broken" when I stopped sliding. I apparently pull a pretty good Tanner Hall impersonation when I'm screaming in pain.

Best I've got is an x-ray back home with my humerus sitting WAY out of its socket. I'll scan it in and post it for shits and giggles. It's not nearly as impressive as some of the hardware floating around this thread.

Having broken a bone, I think dislocations freak me out more. I heard a story about someone dislocating their ankle and having their tibia bone actually pop through the skin.

The shoulder hurt plenty enough when it went. My mom (Registered Nurse) was there and tried to pop it back in after it had started spasming and seizing. It wouldn't go and I screamed at her to "get your fucking hands off me or I'll kick you in the fucking face".

Initial damage was done through a subluxation/dislocation&reduction during a ragdoll skiing park. The dislocation in question happened doing a handstand in the pool.

Can't imagine ejecting a bone through the skin. I'll pass thank you very much.

pain isnt the issue (it sucks and hurts alot though), its how much of an invalid the injury makes you for a while. then you cant do normal activities and have to watch your body wither away. then you ahve to go through an extremely painful and frustrating rehab process.

You can deal with pain, its all the other shit that happens because of the injury that is the really scary part, at least to me.

Holy fucking woah. These breaks are intense. I hope the OP keeps charging as hard as he obviously does. I ride DH as well and all I've ever done is knock myself unconscious a few times anddislocate my already weak shoulder.

Did that on Feb 15th, was back skiing May 7th. Only done two days so far on the new rod/pin arrangement, and its really shitty to ski and try to NOT catch air and pop off rollers, but its slowly getting back.

Skiing switch feels way better on the leg for some reason, kinda makes you think...

less than 12 weeks? eff yeah. I told you bones heal quickly. I hope you are feeling stronger.

I still feel some shit in my back though I was able to get about 35 days including backcountry pow in each wy, switzerland, vt, ny and nh.
