We the people, in order to form a more progressive freestyle ski movement, boycott Downwind Sports of Marquette.
Why? Last friday, november 7th 2003, the co-owners of Downwind Sports put on an event to promote the skiing lifestyle by means of a movie showing at the local university campus. The purpose of the movie showing was to present alternate skiing lifestyles to a broader audience. Prior to the movie showing event, Ben Anderson of GSP (Goon Squad Film Productions) public relations, approached one of the co-owners and proposed a showing of the latest GSP film at the Downwind event. One of the co-owners agreed to this proposal to show the new GSP movie before or after the feature film. More prior to the event the co-owner had mentioned showing the GSP film before the feature TGR movie.
On the date of the event the co-owners decided to start the film 15 minutes before the original start time of the event at 7:00, so that the enitre GSP movie (45min) could be shown. The GSP movie started closer to 6:50pm and was stopped at roughly 7:10pm. At this time one of the co-owners came before the audience and mentioned the name of the movie they were then watching briefly, then explained about the 'great' deals the store was having this upcomming season and for everyone to look at the flyer they were handed with details on such discounts. He then announced that the feature film will be starting following a breif Mount Bohemia ad. From aprox. 7:10 - 7:20 a Mount Bohemia commercial was showed, followed by a 25 minute comical mockery of a documentary hunting television show, in which a character is followed on his hunt for telemark skiers on the Mount. The sketch was poorly written, directed, and produced with childish humor that was not in the best intrest of the majority of the audience at hand. They then started the feature film shortly after 7:45.
Why? you still ask.. The whole event was put on to promote skiing lifetysle and culture, i belive with others, that the event was actually established to lure consumers in so special 'deals' could be shown to them along with paid advertisement for a third party corporation, who paid for the raffle prizes that were to be given away at this event which was also a form of 'bait' to lure consumers in.
By cutting the localy owned GSP film short they failed to show concern for the skiing lifestyle and culture, and also poorly represented the film by not even mentioning that it was only half way thru, leaving people to think it was the end.
These are reasons why i am starting a boycott of Downwind Sports.
