Completely Lost The Stoke

I'm now a freshman in college. I go to a school with a 2-month winter break and didn't go skiing once. I haven't thought about skiing in forever, other than watching the occasional Zootspace or Sickos video. I've skied for the better part of 16 years, and I have a place to ski 45 mins away. I just can't be bothered to ski. Is this normal?

Was in the same boat. This was my first season back after going only a few times during uni. I still love it. But I have job, family shit, etc… it’s just hard to find the time with more responsibilities. But uni isn’t everything, I regret not skiing to study all the time. Same could be said about working or whatever. You gotta balance things and if you are totally bumming gotta make a change. Hobbies are important. If ur chillen it’s also fine to grow out of things.

It’s been hard for me to get out but I just gotta be really spontaneous about it or force myself to go but after I make it to the hill I bliss out.

i think it kinda happens during college for a lot of people with just less time to focus on skiing. i really got into more than ever once i was done with college and had all the time again

Definitely normal IMO, I was the same way in college, thought I would never ski again. Now here I am in my mid 20s skiing every possible chance I get. Can't pinpoint what changed for me exactly but I'm not complaining lol

Not sure if you mostly ski solo or with homies but if you do ski solo, plan a trip or a big day with some people if able and just focus on hanging and not skiing. I ski solo a decent amount but going with homies always brings back my stoke if I’m not feeling it. Or just take some time off and come back, nothing wrong with temporarily changing hobbies

Is street skiing an option?
My first year in marine school in Owen Sound,ON I didnt have a car. That year, it dumped so much snow! No one skied or boarded so I was stuck alone with a ton of snow and nothing to do.
I skied the trees near steep hill, looked for rails to hit, gaps to clear… this was 2007. Next year I found a talent boarder looking for gas money for the hill. Got a ride, but it didnt snow that year…

It can come back man. Trust me. University demanded a ton of my time so skiing took a backseat. Went from being a daily rider to a weekend warrior at best. Once I finished grad school, I got back into it in a big way and have never been more in love. Skiing will always be there for you , and its okay to take some time away for other aspects of your life :)

I went thru very similar feelings a few years ago, actually around my freshman year too... finding a good group of homies to ski with can be a game changer, I used to ski alone all the time and it was boring as fuck. its good every now and then tho.

what kind of skiing do u normally do? it can also help to switch up and try a different mode of skiing... like I felt like I couldn't progress in park for a long ass time, so I spent a season touring and doing backcountry and another whole ass season just working for perfect carve technique and going fast. then got stoked back on park skiing again.

mental game can come and go in waves, keep ur mind open and keep skiing in one fashion or another and the stoke will drift back:)

I kinda fell off around that time as well, didn't have a car or friends to ride with, went from 48 days senior year of HS down to like 5 days my freshman year of college and deff didn't put in the effort to get out there. Next year found some cool friends to shred with, joined the university ski club and got back into it. lotta ups and downs with burnout over the years, I wouldn't stress too much about it, things come and go, if you take a season or two off to mellow out a bit you can always come back later

big on this. Joining my school's ski club (and getting as involved as possible) and also helping to shape the freestyle community around here really boosted my passion for skiing

You just started something completely new (college) so it's not very surprising that you aren't thinking as much about something that you've already done your whole life. Once I went to college I had other things to do, but also skiing alone predictably got extremely boring. Not to say that skiing alone is necessarily a bad time, but I genuinely can't recall a memorable day where I was skiing by myself. All my best ski memories are doing dumb shit with friends-- which is probably exactly why you still watch Sickos videos.

Other people have already mentioned it but university ski clubs are great. If there isn't one at your school, start one. Additionally, I've found that open adult competitions are way more casual/fun than comps as a kid/teen. There's no bullshit-- everyone knows they aren't going pro and we all have work the next day. People are still good but there's no egos or jocks, just friendly competition. USCSA does affordable collegiate slopestyle/rail jams (slalom/GS too if that's your thing), and IFSA also does collegiate freeride comps but those are more expensive and only in specific regions.

You’re probably like 38 man, which I guess gives you the right to say that. And I’ll leave things there. I’m going to be the bigger person and turn the other cheek because I realize that 38 years is really probably about 12 years in skierman years (though I’m being generous), and therefore you simply don’t know any better yet than to pick fights with people on the internet when you could be skiing park (which you probably haven’t done for the better part of two decades) and dying your hair a more attractive color and maybe

Kid, the only stoke anyone needs nowadays is Oldstoke. Get your Oldstoke on kiddo😃👍 and eat your vegetables. And watch out for skierman because I think he and Oldstoke are scheming—making all sorts of "inators” and whatnot🤷‍♂️

Sometimes u just gotta be the stoke you wish to see in the world. It’s contagious!

I lost a lot of my steam this season too, one of my “life of the party” type friends took his life right before the season started which practically killed it for me. But I thought about how he’d want me out there, and not sitting the season out. Sure enough I found stoke again somewhere out in the mountains with my friends.


I think everyone had a pretty “low morale” season this year for all sorts of reasons. Ur not alone bro, you’ll find it again! Maybe switch the style up, I started doing more carving and hard charging than just lapping park all day. That really helped, brought me back to my roots.

It happens, my stoke ebbs and flows. It's not always a bad thing to take some time away from skiing. Being stuck in Ontario, the past two winters have been pretty low for me. This winter was better, got more into backcountry and had some stupid deep days in unexpected spots, but overall I’m ok to be dormant. When I get ready to move back out west in a few years I’ll be all fired up and ready to go.

It’s normal man. Dont put too much pressure on it. I haven’t been as stoked this year either. Job requirements, life requirements, the drive being a hassle, other hobbies taking my attention for now. Just give yourself some space and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. It’s for fun. It’s not a job.

I am currently in highschool and want to continue to ski in college. My main priority for the colleges I will be applying to is if there are near a ski resort. Should I not be doing this??

Definitely do this!!! There's some good threads about this already but my personal recommendation is University of Nevada, Reno.

agreed, my school was a significant distance from skiing and it took a toll on my day count for a couple years, if it's important find a school in/near a ski town. MSU in Bozeman is a good option as well, close to Bridger with a lot of kids skiing before/after classes
