Snobbery in Park Skiing

Before I proceed this is just a discussion post not a hate thread, but I wanted to talk about the observation that snobbery in park skiing seems to be at an all time high and to be frank, it's pretty disappointing.

I grew up skateboarding primarily and in the 15+ years I did it, I probably only met a few people in the sport that were complete douchebags, one of which was an acclaimed friend of simon dumont's (shocker). That said, I always appreciated how chill the (majority) skateboarding community was.

However, as the last 10 years have passed it seems like there is a growing level of snobbery in freestyle skiing (especially from the rise of social media) so for 1. you're probably not as good as you think you are, so when some jerry comes asking for advice step off the high horse and be a decent person and idk maybe help em out or just be open to the fact that someone is interested in the space? 2. most of you would not be nearly as good as you are without mommy and daddy's money, again not hate, but that's just a fact - I am sure there are exceptions but I'd argue those people are outliers. AND #3 nobody really gives a fuck about how many swaps you can do on a rail or how many flips you can do in the air, is it sick as fuck to see someone who is an expert at their craft, yes, does it ruin it when you find out their pretentious assholes, also yes. Point is, chill out a little and instead of being a dick, just educate people who show interest, it's that simple.

Gonna go out on a limb and say most of you don't agree but I mean come on, I cannot be the only one seeing this.

You forgot to include that the OP’s title and question was a yes or no question: “am I a poser?”

to which I answered my honest opinion. I didn’t just randomly call him that lol.

for the binding one I just meant he overpaid by about $90. You can get strives for much cheaper. $240 is pivot money.

Where do you see this happening? I gotta say everywhere I've been (east coast and midwest) is super down to earth. People are almost always down to strike up convos in the park. Some standoffish or quiet folks here and there, but most of the time super chill. Make one decent joke or throw someone a compliment and you've got a very solid chance of making a new homie in my experience.

Are you at a park where people are making skiing competitively their job? Could have a lot to do with it. I'm just not seeing it at any of the hills I've been to.

KilaTsunamiI feel like it’s just high schoolers with a chip on their shoulder that act like that. All the older dudes couldn’t care less, as long as they get their turns in, and you’re not in their way. Even if a kid is in my way I’m always chill bcs they’re probably just learning.


Pretty much this. Once you hit a certain age your just stoked to see the sport still alive. Seeing young kids in the park kind of brings back happy memories too.

Exactly, I remember being a little shit head in the park... I had my jersey saggin, pants low, afterbangin' every chance I got ... you couldn't tell me nothin'. So it's not our place as old heads (30) to tell the youth what "is and isn't cool". It's just not how it works. All we can do is give em advice that they'll disregard and then eventually learn the hard way just as we did. It's a right of passage at this point.

It’s our place as oldheads to teach the kids to weight the front foot not back on kink rails. Then they get it and they don’t need us anymore lol

from my observations in europe, as OP said, i've come across a lot of instances of "main character" syndromes, especially at heavy ski scene cities. The amount of times i've gotten snobbed in liftlines or drop ins. It's actually become a funny to look at experience now haha. But also mind boggeling. It used to be much more open to newcomers and less about what you are (in terms of looks and background) and more about what "we all came her to do" - which is trying to have a good time with the homies on the hill escaping jobs, school, puberty. Not the gram or flexing around flow deals.

But maybe it's us now grown up folks being super reflective, as part of growing up. We can't expect teens to be so, like we havent been ourselves probaly at that age at came across weird towards others.
