How the fuck can a British person be overweight when they have a food culture centered around mayonnaise and beans. What could possibly motivate them to eat more than the bare minimum for survival. If I ever went to England I would probably starve within a week because even death is better than jellied eels. The fucked up thing is, 37% of British are overweight. That makes them the third most obese country in Europe. It’s understandable how a person can live an unhealthy lifestyle in the USA where we have burgers and McDonald but in Britain it is just inexcusable.
Overweight is defined by some bullshit tho, doesn't even mean unhealthy. Like look at this fuckin BMI chart:
You mean to tell me at my height (6'-1") it is OPTIMAL to be 140 pounds? You would fucking die, I was 156 a couple summers ago from running long distance daily and you could practically see my organs through my skin. No way this shit is real, that range is nonsense.
Agreed that BMI is inaccurate- but it gives the doctor something to start with, and its super easy to do and almost free.
When i went in for a physical and my chart showed overweight, the doc looked at me and said that clearly i was in good shape and healthy, because muscle weighs more than fat.
on the other hand, if an actual obese person walks in, the doc will be able to see rolls of fat vs slightly defined abs and visible defined muscle, give them a number, and say- “look, you are obese. Eat a carrot and go skiing.” Which is way easier than ordering a super expensive, timely bodyfat % test.

I don't disagree with what you are saying, I'm saying the term "overweight" is misleading especially in articles like the one linked

Totally agree with that. Maybe its because I havent spent time in Mississippi, but the stat that 40% of Americans are Obese I just find it kind of hard to buy.

one thing to remember is that BMI is a population-based statistic based upon the average sedentary lifestyle. It is not necessarily applicable to gym rats, active people such as distance runners, skiers etc. Thats where 99% of the complaints about muscle weight pushing people into overweight or obese categories come from. And any actual medical professional would instantly discount the calculations and say you're fine and its not applicable.

I 100% believe it. Not sure where you're from but walking around it is pretty easy to see around me.
As skiers, we're associated with people who have active lifestyles, and skiing is also associated with wealth, so it doesn't surprise me that someone on NS wouldn't see the true distribution of people across the USA.

fr living in tahoe, park city, jackson, yada yada yada.....you wont see it. Those are places focused on active lifestyles for the 1%. Weathly individuals have the money and time to eat right, do activities that keep them fit, go to the gym etc. Its a massive confounder and most places NSers live and the people they hang out with are not going to be indicative of the US as a whole.

I mean true but In connecticut we didn't really have obese people, there definitely were fat people but nowhere near 40% of the population
Honestly, as an English person, I genuinely don't get the hate for the food, a lot of what people say is kind of made up, 90% of the food is honestly really good, people in the UK don't even really have "traditional" food that often, most of the stuff eaten is really multicultural, curry is one of the most popular types of food, the national dish is actually a chicken tikka massala, although as a nation we are admittedly getting fat as fuck. BTW, greggs steak bakes and bacon sarnies are the best meals on the face of the earth and I'll fight anyone who disagrees.
god could you imagine the shit food we would have to eat if the brits won the revolutionary war. and no wonder theyre fat. they think cookies are just biscuits. you’d think with all those fucked up teeth it would slow them down but naw.
i am glad to be in the mountains where active lifestyles are prevalent and we don’t have the cash cows like other parts of the us.

it is definitely true dude. Medically obese is lower weights than you think, not just people rolling around in wheelchairs in walmart or my 600lb life.
at 5'10 and 210 pounds you are most likely medically obese subbing outside factors like bodybuilding. Once again, it's a population statistic so it's not always true at the individual level.......But most people eyeballing it would just say oh they're a bit overweight.....there is a medical difference. This is probably due to the growing rates of overweight and obese people in the US.......as more of the US gets larger, it requires a larger and larger person for you to notice that they are fat. Like I said, if you saw a 5'10, 210-pound person in the store you probably wouldn't even notice.
Also, off the top of my head i am pretty sure CT, VT and Mass have some of the lowest rates of obesity in the US. So that would play a factor.

Clearly you haven’t been to London. They have mcd on every corner just like we do. KFC, bk etc etc.
English sweets are good and some of the traditional dishes (steak and ale pie, fish and chips) are pretty damn good and also super unhealthy. They also drink like crazy
It's not 1950 anymore, there's a ton of really good food in the UK largely due to immigration from west indies, asia, etc. They're probably eating delicious well-seasoned fried chicken all the time, not jellied eals lol

WOAH! That one is nuts, agree. I'm 6'3" and if I was 150lbs (low range of optimal) I couldn't possibly be "healthy". At 172lbs I straight up did not look right.
