It’s still crazy to me seeing grown men post things on tik Tok. But seeing alex Haeckel posting “apparently the first two people who pop up when you hit share want to ski pow with you” followed by pow stock footage was my tipping point. Like bro you car so much about anonymous people who don’t even ski. Making the caption all relatable n shit for people wh on go skiing once every 3 years. Like the fake likes mean that much to you? Where you need to angle your whole creative process to match the mainstream clicks? All I’m saying is that alex hackel used to be core af but tik tok really got to him. Lame

Audi might have given a dime for two for it and I doubt TikTok money is even comparable to that. Not saying neither of the guys are sellouts in my opinion, but that's an unfair comparison.

The vast majority of skiers do not make money skiing. That includes probably everyone on this thread. If there are opportunities for professional skiers to make money while people still care about their skiing exploits, I can look past the occasional dalliance with more cringe-enducing types of media.

A few pros might make enough during their careers to have an early retirement, whatever that might mean for them. Others will definitely move into long-term positions in the ski industry. However, I'd say that the majority will endure a similar fate to the majority of athletes in any sport - they are pro for a short period of time and have to transition back into the 'real world' and find a job. If all you've done since you were 14 is ski, I suspect that is a tough transition. All of this is to say that if you've got to push your clips all over the internet to get a few extra bucks in the bank right now, I'm fine with it. I guarantee that hackel's favorite part about his life is the skiing, not the posting.

I feel the same way about social media. Like I don't mind scanning Facebook when I'm taking a dump to see who got married, where my college friends are at, liking pics of my nieces at Disney World, etc. The thing I can't get into is just the incessant scrolling, emoji reactions, soliloquies, uneducated literature, and bullshit characters that make TikTok and Instagram what they are. I'd rather watch videos of skiing trick tips and actually LEARN stuff. Social media just keeps you dumb.

@percs you're a crusty old head that posts tons of stupid takes like this one, so I'm gonna keep this short, but without hackel selling out to instagram he'd be pursuing a career and not skiing. Same goes for every other pro skier you love, they are just trying to survive in a brand driven industry, there are very little ways to make money in the ski industry these days and you should be happy that your favorite skiers can make any money at all.

It's the new-age of ski industry marketing and it's here to stay. No different than multi-page spreads in ski magazines and producing yearly ski flicks every season. It's just that its waaaay easier on overhead costs for the companies involved and the skiers only have to game the algorithm in order to produce results.

You could also just like not pay attention. This goes for oldheads and young kids worried about not being "core" enough. This industry has a lot worse shit going on behind the scenes than some tiktok videos. And I'm willing to bet you felt the same way about Tanner Hall when he first signed with Red Bull a long time ago, as well as other skiers in the past that made lucrative career moves. If you put your body through the ringer and helped promote your brands day in/out, you'd probably want to be fairly compensated too.

I understand what everyone is saying about the need to post on tiktok and instagram to be a pro skier nowadays but I think there is a way to do it tastefully. When I saw this Hackel instagram post I didn't even realize it was him, I thought it was just another account which pushes basic skiing videos that beg people to share with "people you would ski pow with" Maybe there is a happy medium where skiers can post videos of their skiing on instagram with it still being cool but I just don't think this is it.

Hackel is obviously filthy at skiing and I don’t fault him for being on tik tok. I think he should totally be posting clips on there cause that’s the way to reach the youth nowadays, ns isn’t that big of a website and posting only “core” places will get you all of 5 people. In general though I don’t like the “first 3 people to pop up when” posts and he could probably get the same attention by posting clips of him /the rest of the bunch/ 1000 skis crew doing some rad shit. Mad respect to him nonetheless

The difference is despite Quattro being an ad it’s still sick as fuck original content while skiing TikTok is low effort copy and pasted marketing.
