Well paying summer jobs in SLC

Going to school rn for civil engineering, I graduate next spring and plan on busting the move out to SLC. However I’m not too stoked on entering the 40 hour workweek during winter type thing. I wanna have at least 2 months or so to take off to go on street trips with homies n such. Trying to utilize my early-mid twenties, then fall back on my degree once I’m done doing long trips mid winter.


just wanna delay getting a job specific for my major for a few years. Any SLC locals have any good recs from say April to November, that could cover student loan payments + rent and such? What kinda rent can I expect to pay if I have some roommates for the cheaper/more affordable houses/apts?

Or am I teaching too far and I should just get an engineering job and make ample money and become a weeknight / weekend skier?



I know this is kinda specific but any locals who have any insight would be greatly appreciated. Just overly scheming for my future.

Idk if it has settled down, but jobs in CE were poppin for a bit in CO with more infrastructure and building projects than the state knew what to do with. There's no reason you can't ski hard 2-3x a week and stack PTO/holidays to cop an 15-20 work weekday ski days a season.

If you start in CE now at say 75k, in 2-4 years 100k+ is very probable. If you start in CE in 2-4 years, you'll be making 75k wishing you had the extra experience and guap for trips, housing, bougie shit, etc.

Your school is one of the better options for connections for recruiters looking for new hires. It's not what you know, it's who you know and you'll have a more difficult time if you're not networking.

or just get a job in your field and save pto. Having money is nice.

rent for apt downtown/sugarhouse is like 1-2k. Living with homies is way cheaper.

Trades/jobs with tip money/having rich parents. Its pretty brutal COL if you don't have a nice setup. Engineering seems pretty cush and there are probably some firms out here begging for people. I'd shoot that shot for sure and have no shame in getting skiing in whenever you can, but if you really want to ski all the time, it comes with a lot of bullshit stress and shitty jobs if thats what you're into.

Also this. My buddy is a climber and an expert in ropes and shit and was making over 60/hr setting up stuff for the NBA all-star game this past week. Don't get ran into the ground by the ski industry. Go higher.

Makes sense. Only thing is I go to school on the other side of the country so I’m not sure if that helps my case in terms of job hunts at career fairs and such. But maybe I’m wrong and the companies coming in to these career fairs have locations in SLC.

Yeah that’s the thing I have no issue with “not being able to ski a shit ton” I literally just want at least a month or 2 off in January and Feb to travel with the boys. Other than that I have absolutely no issue with working 40+ hour weeks at an engineering firm and going skiing a few days a week.

Tradie jobs do allow for it. I definitely made more than I do as a ski patroller mowing grass on golf courses in Park City, plus an unlimited OT budget helps with that too.

My brother has a good job he got right out of college in his field and I thought he would become a weekend warrior but he has time to ski like 4 days a week with night skiing and he has enough time off to take about 6 weeks worth of ski trips to wherever, and the money to do it too.

Work for a contractor/consultant of some sort that primarily does outdoor/field work. I work for a contractor as a geologist. Our contracts are all field work (water quality monitoring, environmental remediation, and geophysics). When it starts to snow the workload slows down substantially and I take three months off in the winter and keep all my benefits.

I was a lot like you in my 20s and worked jobs that did not pertain to my career. Arborist, solar panel installer, land surveyor, mold/asbestos abatement... etc. I would just quit my job when I had enough money and go surf in Mexico, Dominican Republic, Bali, etc and then come back and find another mindless job. Those kinds of jobs will not pay well, but will have very little responsibility and they are accustomed to high turnover rates so you quit more or less whenever.

Have you looked at contracted jobs?

Different field in web development, but there is tons of contract type stuff for it. I dream of working 8 months then taking the 4 months to just be skiing

USAjobs.gov has lot of entry level "science" related jobs that are 6-8 month summer terms. They often cater to recent college grads and will pay something like $16-18/hr. APPLY EARLY. It's the gov't. They are beyond "paint drying on the wall" slow. It can take 6 months for them to respond.

I spent a summer in Lake Tahoe working outside in the Tahoe National Forest as a land surveyor this way. Gov't jobs get every holiday under the sun paid off and generally a 4/10 schedule (3 day weekends).

get in the general contracting field as an engineer - I work 6/630-330 every day with weekends off. pay is really competitive as well but be expected to work extra hours when it's crunch time.

In 95% of cases, being a rookie raft guide is worse than the ski industry. Living on a guide camp, not getting paid for the weeks of training, etc. Just to grind out day trips on a mediocre class 3 section. Angry August is a thing for a reason. Can be really cool if you get into extended trips or year round management tho.

get a contract engineering job with a short term or at the very least get a job in something that at least might be a little relatable to the field you want to end up in. Or find a remote job and then you can still travel for 2 months, just won't be void of responsibility.
A lot of people will be suspect if they see that you graduated 5 years ago, but have done nothing with the degree. If I was interviewing you and you said that you took a few years off to film street skiing, l would ask to see the video and then hire you if it was good.

I feel like i80 in utah is a lot more chill + the skiing is way closer.

Dude you're going to be rudely-awakened to realize that I80 going up to PC is always a fucking nightmare. It's either the Indy 500 or a parking lot.

That’s fair, and they get more snow. Only benefit of denver over SLC is that the actual city is way better and Ruby hill is pretty dope. For skiing yeah SLC prob the move, and probably have similar job scenes

parleys is very chill compared to i-70 my man, I drive it daily, its rarely every stopped and the top will get slow when its snowing (wow weird) but its not getting backed up bumper to bumper on a saturday with no weather issues.

the only traffic you will hit is when you get off the freeway to pc, saturdays are definitely the busiest but as soon as you're through the intersections near the interstate, the road moves along, its pretty normal ass resort traffic, nothing like i-70 and it takes < an hour to get to PC with traffic, 30ish with no traffic.

there's always the anomaly pow days that back up the roads and cause long delays, but thats gonna happen in any resort town.

and woodward is about 15 min closer than PC with basically no traffic ever getting off the freeway/to woodward, no matter the day.

Rinse and repeat till you lose all your options in utah then move back to pennsyltucky and live out your life tailgating amish buggies on your way to your desk job in Harrisburg. Weekend trips go wisp with the kids will always be there.

but for a more adult response, literally any trade job will pay well if you're not an idiot, can use your hands and have the slightest bit of common sense. Paint houses for $20-30 an hour easiest job ive ever had is painting over the summers. Dont smoke weed for a month and get a job doing construction you can make atleast $25 an hour being a fucking flagger and spinning the "stop" "slow" sign for construction sites and only go up from there if you have even the slightest bit of experience. Roofing fucking sucks in the summer but you usually have shorter days working just gotta be up early to start laying shingles before the sun starts cooking that shit to 130 degrees and you feel the soles of your boots starting to melt. Framing pays exceptionally well but you need some entry level labor experience at the least to get one of those usually. Restaurants are a solid second hustle especially in the summertime if youre in the right touristy spots. The reality of it is that there is an abundance of jobs out there these days and if you have the slightest bit of work ethic you will probably be fine.
