Mt. Hood Summer Camps - Advice?

Hi All - we want to send my 11 year old son to one of the summer camps at Mt.Hood this summer. He is an incredible all mountain skier and has recently been spending more and more time in the park, realizing he loves it. I'm looking at Windells and Mt.Hood Summer Ski Camp. Does anyone have an opinion or feedback on either one? thx!

I went to MHSSC way back in the day. Like 2007. I think I was around 14. I loved it. Met a lot of cool people too, including future Olympians and people who would go on to start ski companies. Highly suggest it. People of all ages. It was like heaven for me. Granted, this was awhile ago..

I went to windells and it was a spectacular experience. their facilities are great and all the people there are super cool. but i didn't get as much coaching as i would've liked.
from what i've heard, mt.hood summer ski camp is more structured, which would probably be better for an 11 year old

MHSSC sadly sold their campus at the end of this past summer. I’m not sure the plan for this coming summer but last I heard someone was planning to continue running the camp from a different location (maybe govy?). If I were you I’d call and find out the details about housing this year. On the other hand, Windells campus is sick and if your son is interested in skating or something that would be the place to send him.

As far as skiing goes, Timberline took over all the terrain parks a couple summers ago so all the camps use the same on hill facilities now. Coaching also seems pretty equal for both camps these days so he’ll have pretty much the same skiing experience either way.

Went to MHSSC for like 4 years. If they want to make the most out of it, have them look into camper staff positions of some type. Pay for a week and work a week to stay extra long, that was my first job and was great character-building (picking up trash bags torn open by vultures at 630am). I met most of my lifelong ski friends at MHSSC. The kids you grow up with may or may not keep skiing, but chances are better than not the kids at MHSSC will always keep skiing.

Met future Olympians, future ski guides, future resort operators, today I live 2000 miles from where I grew up a few blocks over from 5+ kids I went to MHSSC with who also grew up 2000mi away. Can't say enough good things about it beyond just that they'll get to ski. MHSSC was character-defining for me and a lot of other kids, to this day 12 years later I get along with ex-MHSSC campers almost immediately. Except for Julie.

I went to windells last summer and everything said about it here still stands. I met cool people who ski and snowboard. I'm even still in contact with my coaches who still give me advice.

I was 14 when I went to mount hood and my coach made me boof ketamine in our cabin. Aside from teaching us how to pick locks and siphon gasoline, my camp counselor taught us how to make crack.






On a real note your kid will probably not shower for a week and make some friends and ski with pros in the sun and come home with a shit ton of gear from raffles and competitions around the campground. He will also probably ask you to buy him either a skateboard or rollerblades and learn a few new tricks

maybe its a great experience and he would learn so much from some of the best in the sport, but many of the people out there in the summer are pothead/degen ski bums. not sure you would want their influence on your child. "the ark" is where the staff are housed by windells and (or atleast used to be) and its known to be a shit show.

Consider a season pass. Day passes are pricey at $89, but a season pass pays off in ~11 days if you plan to go for a longer time.

I did MHSSC last summer and it was an awesome experience. Probably a little more ghetto then windells but it fits the culture more. They all use the same parks and the coaching is comparable.
