BigPurpleSkiSuitYeah, that's true, I forgot that alternates are brought to the games, so it's not like someone was missing out. I'm definitely overreacting because of the way I treated sports growing up. Especially as guys, we're taught not to show any kind of weakness at all, and compete because your teammates are relying on you at all costs. It's not the be all end all for life, and you're right that it's for sure a traumatic situation. In my opinion, after the whole Nassar debacle came out, the women's gymnasts should have formed their own organization and not participated in any events with US Gymnastics since it was clear they enabled that monster.
Homie don't bend your knee, what she did was wrong. She could've won us the gold and she quit from the pressure. That's called choking, actually worse she didn't even attempt it. That's not a champions mindset and that's not the mindset of someone who weaves a goat into their dress.
As far as the Nassar thing, has she said this a reason for why she didn't perform? Not at all, not once, it likely has nothing to do with it. She put down some shitty runs and wasn't able to reconcile. Rather than trying again and maybe accepting defeat because losing and how you take a loss is part of being an athlete she outright quit.
Like I said above, she's going to compete in all her personal events. Hopefully then you guys can see how this was all bullshit and nothing to do with mental health, she wasn't able to perform and rather than accepting that she quit. For some reason that get's praise now? It's the same reason Naomi Osaka pulled out of all Wimbledon, she's a bad tennis player on that surface. Makes up a lie about how it's stress due to the media, then goes on multiple award shows and is doing photoshoots, all excuses for not being able to perform.
Man, I feel for Biles. She alone is the face of US Women's gymnastics, and is the poster child of the US Olympic effort as a whole in Japan. She had an insane year leading up to this, and at 24 is more accomplished than any female gymnast before her. She doesn't just "choke." The weight of the world was on her shoulders at the same time she was having "bad" performances. She had the maturity to recognize what was going on, and to realize a potential injury was on the table, and take steps to manage the situation. Its important to realize how her teammates reacted to her decision. They get it. We're out here watching TV and tearing her down for making very sound choices directed at protecting her mental and physical health. As a lifelong competitive athlete without even a hair of her talent, I can't imagine what she's going through. It would go a long for her and for all Olympic athlete's too see the country she achieved so much for actually just fucking support her health.

You wouldn't be saying this if Aaron Rodgers/ Tom Brady quit before a Super Bowl for no apparent reason. It would be stained on their legacy forever and almost nobody would defend them. Hell Brady gave 6 chips to the Patriots and a large number of Patriots fans still feel betrayed that he left for Tampa Bay.

Do better, treat all athletes on the same scale
I mean, I wouldn't be stupid enough to make a comparison like you're making in the first place. You are someone that literally just doesn't know anything, so I'm not gonna bother explaining anything to you.

Explain to me how it's any different I want to know.
You have the best player on the team, the team needs you, the best player on the team decides not to compete for no reason other than feeling "off", the team loses. That player now get's praise and is seen as brave for letting down her team? Cam Newton still get's shit talked to this day for not diving onto a loose football in the Super Bowl. Diving onto that ball could've resulted in the end of his career considering 2-3 more Broncos defense players were all springing onto it, and at any given time all these years later it's still permanently stained on his legacy.
Simone owes us nothing, if she didn't want to compete solo for the rest of time I totally respect it, but she let down her TEAM. America used to be gold or bust, but these days it's clear we are more than happy with silver (boomer take.)

Bad boomer take. My grandma is a boomer and she supports Biles.
In professional sports like the NFL, athletes are literally paid to compete. They owe their teams simply because they're paid to. There's a financial obligation to the team, and in extension, to the fans that support the team.
Olympians don't owe us shit. There's no financial obligation. They're competing for themselves at the highest international level. Pretty sure none of us have been under that kind of pressure before. Did she make a promise to you that she'd compete? Is her obligation to winning that medal for you worth more than her mental health? I don't think so.
Her team supports her decision and as a country, we should too.
I've personally lost too many friends to mental health. Shaming someone for looking after themselves is shitty. And I guarantee that she's more disappointed than anyone else. Backing out before the culmination of her career has to be devastating. If you support America, you should support our athletes.
BigPurpleSkiSuitYou're a goddamn Olympian. Kerri Strug vaulted after tearing ligaments in her ankle, and you're saying you didn't even try because you were under stress? Fuck off, I can't think of something I've been more personally disgusted by in a long long time.
Damn brother life must be good if this is the most personally disgusting thing you have seen in a long time. Is this the same guy who was cool with the pats cheating?

Solid "I played ayso soccer" and then never played sports at any sort of remotely high level take.
Why does people doing whatever the fuck they want piss off the people who are "all for" people doing whatever the fuck they want so much

"Mental health" is going to become the new excuse for any athlete when they are performing like shit to get out of a contest. If you want to call yourself the goat and stitch it into your clothing then one week later not be able to compete at a GOAT level because you aren't in the right head space costing us a gold medal you are going to get criticism that you are not a goat.
She doesn't owe anything to us but she owes it to her team, and I guarantee you in private her teammates are pissed.

Swiss women swept the mountain bike podium. Lecomte looked like she was suffering for the first time this year and PFP just looked like she was riding defensively. I’m glad to see Jolanda back racing (and winning) from her injuries.
Hey buddy make sure to teach your children quitting is okay when everyone else is depending on them. Then you will get the root of many problems we are currently having in America.
I dont agree with what she did but I admit it was a bit of an overreaction on my part.

Show me any great athlete, or any athlete at all, that has ever quit during the NFL playoffs, the NBA playoffs, the World Series, the CFB playoff, the NCAA tournament or any other major team title because they were overwhelmed by mental pressure. I’ve never seen it.
Make sure to settle for everything except gold tho and praise people for quitting. It’s a really solid mindset and will get you far in life.

Biles took the spot that could have been filled by another girl who would not have quit.
so in that sense biles owes it to that girl to do her best.
also biles kind of does owe it to america go do her best especially considering she has earned all of her endorsement money bc of the us olympics program supporting her so much.
but really i couldnt care less about gymnastics,
Its a micro talent pool midget festival for obvious reasons. If 9/10 children were put into gymnastics as kids, biles would probably be outside the top 500.
The swimmers and runners and high jumpers are so much more interesting go watch than gymnasts and the athletes of those disciplines are actually more about physiological superiority than gymnastics which is more about freakish body types

Track, swimming and high jump are all more impressive than gymnastics.
the only thing in gymnastics that compares is trampoline.
track is impressive because speed.
swimming is impressive because strength and streamlined body.
and high jump is impressive because they are the closest humans come to having animal like athleticism. Take womens high jump for example. They dont look like gymnastics freaks. Instead they all look like supermodels.
Heres some women high jumpers.
I used to be able to jump almost my own height in high jump back before i became a cartmanesque fat fuck with vaginitis.
if there was a cunt oylmpics
he may not medal but he'd sure qualify to rep ns
dont worry dolty
the world needs cartmanesque fat fucks with vaginitis too
And the common "fuck her" reaction to her decision is symptomatic of the wildly fucked up situation we've put her in. Again, she owes us nothing. We have no idea what's going on behind the scenes, what politics are being played.
Anyway, can we go back to laughing about MVP endoing off that drop because he didn't show up to practice, and then our lord and saviour Jolanda stomping the nose case to clean up in the rain?

If there were a simp Olympics you’d qualify for that too. You’d get a participation trophy along with your girlfriend cheating on you, cause you praise people who quit when the going gets tough.
coronaYea this reminds me of a recent story about someone who was running for office in the upcoming election. They dropped out of the race and made a statement saying they they couldn't handle the pressure and didn't want to affect their mental health. A week later they came out and said they were forced to drop out because they had some boudoir photos online (that they had already disclosed) and the party told them to say it was for stress/mental reasons.
No saying Biles has nudes online or anything like that, but it's tough to buy that someone like her would drop out at that stage in the game because of stress. Seems more like something she would be told to say.
My guess is her levels are off from systemic doping. Usually really smart doctors know how to manage the baseline and work around testing schedules. Maybe something went wrong and they knew she would test hot? Anyway just some ramblings.

Dennis Rodman left during the NBA Finals to clear his head.
I'm sure she wanted to compete and she is already a proven winner (4 Olympic Golds and 19 World Championship Golds). Its a pretty shit take to question her drive and mindset given what she's achieved. With all the pressure it would be even harder to make the call to sit, which she also did for the team because she didn't want to cost them a medal. She trusted the alternate on the team to perform better than she would for the teams benefit. Pretty mature call.
On another note, did anyone watch the surfing? Medina vs igarashi was one of my fave heats to watch in a long time. Shocked gabby didnt medal

You don't call yourself the goat then sit out and watch your team win silver, you step up to the plate and win gold, or you lose and take responsibility for the loss like any LEADER does on a team. Go for broke, don't go for second, I thought thats been the entire US olympics team outlook forever? Look all I'm saying is if she sat out and said "I just wasn't in the right head space I feel like I let my team down." Like all NHL captains do after a playoff game loss, we wouldn't be here right now. I would say wow that's totally understandable and admirable. It's the praise she is getting for quitting MID EVENT that is making my head explode. I understand there is pressure, we are human, but it's not "brave" it's not "heroic." It's an amazing athlete falling short, something that has happened to every sports great in their career. But quitting is not more admirable than losing and it never will be.

She started and wasn't performing so she stopped in order to give her team the best chance at winning. The push through at all costs to win mentality is a toxic culture created by the us gymnastics program that allowed decades of sexual abuse to exist in the shadows. Quitting has a hugely negative connotation behind it. In this case, I see it as her listening to herself and knowing she was failing but rather than accepting the reality of her failure at her teams detriment, she put trust in her replacement to do better than she would have. It does take a lot of strength to know you are weak in a moment with all eyes on you and make a decision for the whole rather than your own personal glory. The team still won a silver rather than potentially nothing which is huge to the rest of the less famous gymnasts on it.
Cristiano Ronaldo picked up a knee sprain in the first half of the 2016 Euro Final, watched from the sidelines, and was lucky to have his team win. In my mind, its time to start equating mental health to physical health which means you can have mental injuries that are linked to physical performance. Some you can push through, others you can't. In a sport with a huge mental component like gymnastics, a fucked headspace will lead to failure and its refreshing to see it caught before implosion.

"Tom Brady benches himself in the NFC championship and lets his backup QB Ryan Griffin play the 2nd half of the game after not feeling alright mentally, no physical injuries." The Bucs go onto the lose the game. This move comes after Brady wore a shirt in the warmups with a GOAT stitched to the back of his jersey. "No ones better than me" Brady said in the pregame. The push through at all costs mentality is the entire mentality the olympics is fucking based off. This "don't try hard" shit pisses me off, it's cool to try hard, it's cool to give it your all and be proud of your country and yourself no matter what.
The Bucs would cut Brady and people would be burning his jersey. Every sports talk show would be in flames about how horribly this destroys his legacy. He would be labelled a phony and a quitter and there would be a stain on his resume for the rest of time about how he called himself the GOAT and wasn't able to do GOAT things in the moment. If you are the best player, and you call yourself the best player you best believe you are depended on to be the BEST on the field when it comes down it. No one should substitute out for you in the moment if you are the best. If you fail to meet these standards you get criticism, if you outright quit? You'll get outrage.
I don't think a single team would sign him after that his NFL career would be over. I don't want to hear the argument about how gymnastics is more mental than football, you risk just as severe injury in football in a brain fart moment because there are 3 250lb linebackers coming to kill you as you do flipping on a springboard. If it's a physical sport mental plays just as big of a role as physical in 98% of sports cases. I think our standards should be the same for all great athletes, regardless of their gender. The Biles reaction compared to what I believe the Brady or LeBron reaction would be suggests that our standards for women athletes are far more lenient.

Jordan Chiles is not getting enough credit in the whole fiasco. Simone stepped down and trusted she would perform on short notice and she did a pretty dang good job. May not have been peak Biles but still super good, especially given the circumstances.

He didn't quit in the middle of the competition, he let people know before the events started and gave them plenty of time to find other players to fill his spot.

Hell or even park skiing. If Tanner or Dumont would have bailed on a halfpipe run 30 min before their start time at the X-games nobody would call them a hero even though pipe comp skiing is 100 times more dangerous than gymnastics. I get the whole "We need to focus on mental health" but bailing out after so many people put so much into you being there for a specific event is not heroic.

Dude your hyperbole is pretty crazy and youre extrapolating a lot from this. I dunno where you're getting this whole "dont try hard" bullshit from but its insane to me that youre applying it to the best woman gymnast in the world with two moves named after her. I can confidently say that no one on this site has tried at anything in their life as hard as she's given herself to gymnastics. Its dismissive as fuck to just say that she wasn't feeling alright mentally and quit.
I know you didn't want to hear it but gymnastics are much more mental than football. Its not about the consequence of injury that makes a sport mental or not. In football you get multiple instances to change the course of a game and swing it one way or another. There's also a margin for error in your actions and a way bigger chance for your teammates to cover your mistakes. Sports like diving, gymnastics, archery, and even slopestyle require perfection and routine. Executing your routine perfectly is where the mental game comes into play. You only get one try in gymnastics and the expectation is perfection.
Our media is hyping her up a ton for this because its unusual. Maybe its too much hype but I don't need to tear her down for it. I think it takes a ton of maturity to be the best and proclaim it but then to swallow your pride and admit you can't be the best for your team on that day.
It was premature to call herself the goat despite her valid claim to it, and the leotard with it was too far imo. I can't fault her too much tho because she hasn't lost an all around competition since 2013.
Imagine my shock that a bunch of kids on a website that focuses on an individualistic sport have zero idea about the morals and values of team, and what it means to be on one.
Quitting is not courageous, I hope you learn that one day.

I agree. Its disgusting the way the media is fawning over her over this. Sure, there are aspects of mental health in gymnastics that need to be addressed like constant pressure as a young athlete etc. But to bail on the world stage at the last minute and have everyone say you are brave is bullshit. I mean even if your not 100% on your game you still have to try. What a shit lesson to teach young people that you can just throw in the towel and be called a hero.

Damn homie you got us with that one, maybe you can shut the fuck up now so we can talk about the rest the olympics.
