Wren 110 pro vs 21/22 commander 108

I'm expanding my quiver next season to include a mid-fat charger I can ride in most conditions. I don't really care that much about pow performance but I want these skis to go straight, FAST, and destroy chop or anything else that gets in their way. I've narrowed my list down to these 2 skis, does anyone have experience with them? Wrens caught my eye because I have some kartels and like their dampness/durability but watching tyler curle rip the commanders makes me wonder if those would be a better choice. The goal is to have a directional ski which is why I'm looking at these as opposed to stiffer twins, I love my kartels but they are a little too loose for me to ride as straight as I want...
edit: fwiw I'm 5'11, around 140 and ski in Co

Posting to stay in the loop here as I'm also curious. From what I've read, Wrens fit your description more as they seem to be more of a heavy crud buster while the commanders are a nice combo of a stable and quick/not super heavy directional option

edit: the wrens really interest me but I haven't been able to find anything about them online whereas I've seen videos/pics of Tyler riding the new commanders

So I did some more digging and from what I can tell the wrens have a slightly further back mount (-11.25cm) than the commander 108s (-10cm) and the commanders have a slightly smaller turn radius (23m) than the wrens (27m). The effective edge is pretty similar on both the skis and the tip/waist/tail width is also pretty damn similar....I just don't know how this would translate to their on snow performance or differentiate the two

Actually really considered these in the 191, but I'm about to get a pair of trigger 2s from Folsom (99 underfoot and 189cm long) and they'll be a more directional shape, so I then considered the katana 108s but I like smaller us brands lol and I've always been weirdly intrigued by the commander and wren lines

promise me to put the brand thing aside and at least demo a mantra 102, honestly the 184 might be enough for you, they ski big! way over their size and lengths suggest. so demoing 184 or 191 either way is going to be fun.

they also have pretty good and fast bases on them, which is a big thing, for just charging they are way faster than my m-free 108, with same prep, same wax, same stone ground pattern.

Do you think the katana 108s would be chargier than the mantra 102s? I'm gonna have to add those to my list, I've considered the m-pros but I think that might be overkill for me lol...but who knows maybe they'd just help me channel my inner Reine Barkared haha

katana 108s are not chargier, but slightly easier to handle at lower speeds in deeper snow. blister really has quite a bit of good written stuff on both, not sure all is avail to non paying members though? Im having a bit of issue seeing the need for the 108 vs 102 though?

Reine is just nuts. its like he cant see the rocks and cliffs and just decides to carve fallline. Id want to hang out at apres with him, I would not like to ski with him.

Mantra 102 is the only 100+mm ski I have not found a speed limit on of the skis I've tried. with my 240lbs. I grabbed it for skied out hill on one of the weekends locally, I was carving 50-53mph through the divots, bumps, ice patches etc. I also grab this ski if I'm filming highspeed stuff, its just so stable, I can focus on what Im filming and camera, I dont need to look at the ground!

if you want wider, I'd take a look at CT 3.0 2021, its chargyyy ( but less chargy than mantra 102) at some point you wanna go through, not over.



also, you should become fatter, moar speed! my 200lbs buddy is upset with me when I tuck I just go zoooooooom away from him on same skis, same prep :)



I think the m-pro 105 is the only ski I could think of that is more chargy than the mantra 191 that I've tried, anything with that taper design, and weight.. yeah :D.



but hey Im game to try some 110 wrens or commander 108 ;)

Ok I'm definitely gonna try and demo some mantra 102s, I think they'd suit the Co snowpack well...maybe @iggyskier could chime in on the wren 110s? Or @tcurle about the commanders?

Interesting, didn't look at the weights myself (not buying anytime soon, just curious). I must be thinking of the commanders before the redesign

I haven't been on the Wren but the Commander 108 is my favorite ski Moment has ever made. They feel very controllable at high speeds because of how damp they are but also super easy edge to edge. It's a better ski than previous versions by far.

skied today, skied a "regular" ski... meh,


then changed to the mantra 102, on frozen marbles on hardpack, with slush near top where sun hit... you could just let it run free, it was my most exhaustive runs this year, I was alone on the slopes with my buddy and we could go 100% without any bleeding of speed. Damn that ski comes alive at around 45mph and up! It would let me run high edge angle high G carves through everything without skipping a beat.

they dont close until 22:00, so it freezes over before they groom, and we recently had about 8 inches of snow.

Haven't skied the new Wren but the good news is both seem like really good options for what you're describing. Bad news is I don't think there's an obvious answer.

New Commanders are super different vs. the old ones. Like Tyler said, the new skis are far more damp, stable, and generally just fit the more typical 'directional charger' name (e.g., I'd say the new 182 cm C108 is more stable than the old 188 cm was). That said, I imagine the Commander would be a bit more fun / easy at more moderate speeds than the Wren (especially if you mount the new Commander +2 from its line). I'd probably take the Wren for nuking through deep chop cause of its rocker profile, but that's just a guess. Commander strikes me as a slightly more well-rounded option, while still being significantly better for nuking through chop and crud than the Kartel. Both seem great for what you're describing.

Yes but in very limited number. All Wrens will be a reserve line option next year, so we're building a small run for the season and that is it (actual in production now). 96/102/108 will then be available on custom (maybe 114 if people keep asking as we scale up custom options). 110 is a one and done for the year (though I suppose if you wanted a custom and got order in within next week or so (before we pull the mold out) we could build one if there was a specific look you wanted).

Reserve topsheets are a throwback to Wrens of yore.

Just to update, through a massive stroke of luck I found some mint 184cm wren 114s w/ sth2s on craigslist near me (custom black too).

Edit: taking these bad boys to Loveland tmrw...fucking STOKED

To update, these things rip! They did pretty well in moguls (just took a lot of effort) and were so stable hitting drops and taking runouts. They also railed turns like a mfer (had soft groomers) and were surprisingly quick edge to edge
