Snow and wax tribology is melting. Time to start talking skateboard tribology (bearings)

Tribology is just a name for the study of friction. You all know i have a hard on for engineering concepts related to reducing glide friction between skis and the snow, but i also enjoy testing out new bearings and seeing how well they glide (roll) on skateboard. Probably the best bearings ive tried are flip hkd abec 5 and abec 7. Both are incredibly low friction and you glide as if you were on ice. Bones super swiss 6 are also very good but cost 5 times as much as the flip hkds and arent noticeably faster. Zealous and zealous ceramics are cool because they have an extended inner race so you dont need to use a bearing spacer between the bearings or speed rings on each side. They are very smooth but a little bit “sticky” is the best way to describe. They feel really good but dont feel as frictionless as the flip hkds or bones super swiss 6.

anyways, if i could give a single unit of advice i would say to try flip hkd abec 5 on your board. They cost 10-12 bucks and you will cream your pants so hard you will lose consciousness and go into a coma.

Zealous are goated but honestly people care way way too much about bearings in general. Swiss are a ripoff. Just get budget ones

The best bearing is a properly lubricated, properly spacered and otherwise standard bearing. Anybody who says otherwise is wrong.

I havent but i hear alot of great reviews of ml bearings so id like to try them. I have a mini logo deck too which was good.

If i were to give you an old fashioned i would lube up with fluoro wax so you might grow another dick in a few yrs.

Are you cereal? Theres major differences between bearings made in different factories.



alot of different brand name bearings happen to be the exact same bearings from the same factory, just with different color shields or something.

but,

alot of different factories make different quality bearings with different tolerances and attention to detail.

most skate bearings are made in china, including most swiss bearings, but there are good ones and not so good ones out there.

I actually took a course in my mech e undergrad about Tribology. My professor was a leading researcher in the field. It's a fascinating subject. Over 20% of all energy consumption on Earth can be attributed to tribological contact. It's a very new field that not many people know about. Tons of science and experiments are being done to document surface structure, deformation, lubrication, and all the different kinds of wear. Cool stuff. If good lubrication wasn't so awful for the environment, we'd see a lot more of it
