Rivians looked super promising for a while. Would love to have a truck that's powerful as fuck and doesn't lose power at altitude. We're real close to having some badass electric vehicles on the market

Facts, I just dream about ripping one up to the mountains with my bike and skis on the back, hopefully in the next couple years EV is more widespread besides just Tesla
I'm super interested to see how an electric truck performs! I'm a little wary of the practicality though. A stock F-150 can haul a trailer like 600 miles before refueling. And you can take it camping and overlanding with a spare tank of gas just in case. Life with an EV truck will be a little different

True, it would really suck to run out of battery in the middle of nowhere
safarisamI can’t wait for a badass reliable electric 2500.
RAM has announced they're working on an EV 1500 based on the existing platform. Chevy has a redesigned 1500 launching soon based on the Hummer EV platform. The 2500s should be coming in a few years once they've worked out some kinks in the smaller sized pickups. Here's a photo of the Chevy prototype. Should be interesting!
The hummer is interesting, i wouldn't be caught dead in the tesla, it looks like a big slipper. Going to be better options in tge years to come so no hurry.

Doug Demuro summed up my own reaction to the Cybertruck perfectly. It's a really, really bad design. It's going to look very different if/when it ever goes to market

Woah now that’s exciting. I hope the next truck i buy will be my last gas one.

The tri-motor cyber truck is claiming 500+ miles, though likely not towing anything and driving very conservative. The spare fuel is the biggest issue with any EV. Short of bringing an insanely powerful fuel powered 220V generator (defeating the purpose of EV), you are getting towed if you run out.

600 miles with a trailer??? Holy hell that's insanely far....I haven't kept up on trucks really but is that true? that's gotta be around 25+ mpg while towing which just seems crazy.
I could drive from reno to south dakota hauling a trailer only gassing up once...that's 18 hours of driving with one gas stop. Fuck if that's real I'm buying a damn f150

Idk about ford but I daydream on chevy's truck builder every now and then and I think some models of silverado advertise like 31mpg on the highway. Very impressive for a full size pickup.
Bars, they did a good job of not “let’s make this EV look as EV as we possibly can” it’s a solid no frills, bomber platform, that looks fuckin badass yet you couldn’t even tell it’s an EV from a distance

yeah the engines are getting pretty crazy, but that's not while towing.....I mean in my experience with towing boats and trailers it can easily half your mpg depending on what you are pulling.
my Dakota v8 got 15ish mpg...but the second i would strap something on the back it would drop down to 7 or so
I just looked it up and the f150 ecoboost/hybrid whatever gets 24-26ish mpg highway without towing....so i think the 600 miles is pretty far fetched. Damn i was pretty stoked on that

I was curious so I looked it up, the 33mpg figure for the silverado is for the 3.0 diesel 1500. With a 24 gallon tank that's very impressive range, like 700+ with a couple gallons to spare. I think depending on the trailer, if it's aero enough you can probably get some pretty sick range all things considered. I could be wrong but I think diesel trucks tow more efficiently than gas trucks, idk if that matters I've never owned a diesel pickup.

It's true. I get about 30 mpg highway in my dieselrado and around 25 pulling a small trailer with a 1500 lb tractor.
Anyone have thoughts on the Jeep 4xe concept? Pretty cool they kept a gearbox on it but from my basic understanding of EVs I dont know why but the manual lover in me likes it.
byuboundEh tbh I'm kind of lukewarm on it. I love the powertrain, can't stand the emissions system. Its probably cost me like $1000 or so in the last year.
I know nothing about modern diesel emissions but everything I hear is that it's a massive pain in the ass to deal with

The 4XE is a plugin hybrid, which makes sense for electrifying a Jeep. A battery-only model would require a platform redesign from an engineering perspective.
The 4XE adds some additional torque and power compared to the V6 model. It also boosts gas mileage (and range I believe). From that perspective, it's a big bonus over the V6 model. For a "luxury" Jeep, like the Sahara edition, I think it makes a lot of sense for buyers. It would be an amazing top-down cruiser or beach car, without the huge mpg penalty that Jeeps usually come with.
I think it falls short for the 4-wheeling crowd compared to the Rubicon. The batteries will make it significantly heavier, which has a huge impact on capability. That being said, the instant torque from an electric motor may make up for the weight penalty.
I'm interested to see reviews! It looks promising.

Maybe I miss read something that they (Jeep themselves) brought a full electric to some Jeep event. I'll have to go back a see if I can find it.

I think the use case is geared more towards tradespeople towing a trailer out to the lot across town where a new house is getting built or all the service people with trucks, gardeners, pool guys, grease trap techs or whatever. If you want to get way out in the boonies it's going to be a while before the electric trucks will be the best option.
CatdickBojanglesStoked on the tech. But why do they have to make the concepts look so far off from what a truck normally looks like? Just to prove it is an EV?
I agree some look rediculous. I like the rivian design for this exact reason.

I think the Canoo one is cool. I like the cab-over design theme. It could give more usable space and more bed length in a shorter overall footprint.
Overall I agree with your point though. I think a lot of it is just concept car buzz too.

Yeah, really don’t want a statement or wonky looking truck. Just gimme a streamline conventional design.
I'm waiting on dumping a lot of money on an EV until a solid cell battery is sold in a car. Will be way lighter/more energy dense, and have a much longer lifespan. Toyota says they'll launch in 2025, but might be longer before they release a Taco like EV.

I get it but yeah what Sam said. I just want a truck lol.
I like the idea of a engine trunk? It would be nice to have storage that's away from the elements that's also not in the cab. Sucks driving my truck around any everyone is either sitting with gear in their laps or it's in the rain/snow in the bed.

I love the canoo’s extendable bed, and how it’s modular as fuck.
overall the hummer is probably the most truck looking EV out there now tho

From an engineering pov, the EV trucks look different because they aren't constrained by an ICE design. A pickup chassis uses a body-on-frame design. There's a big torque-heavy motor in the front, followed by the transmission, optional transfer case, driveshaft, and huge differential to the rear tires. A fuel tank goes somewhere under that frame too. Pickups have been an evolution of this design since the Model T established it 100+ years ago. It makes sense to cover the chassis with a traditional cab-and-bed design that we think of, since it's the most efficient way to package a pickup.
EV platforms are really cool, since the powertrain (fuel cells, motors, etc) can be integrated into the frame. This means engineers and designers have a blank canvas to re-think how a vehicle should look and operate. Here's what the new Hummer looks like underneath the body. GM can create any design they want on this platform. Some manufacturers like Rivian are mimicking the current truck aesthetic to attract more traditional buyers. But they're taking advantage of the increased space by offering a front trunk and a storage passthrough where a motor and driveshaft would normally be. Tesla and Canoo are innovating their designs a little more than GM and Rivian, simply because they can. Tesla is famous for taking design risks (remember when the Model 3 interior was announced? People freaked out when there was no gauge cluster).
The new VW ID.Buzz is a perfect example of the cool new possibilities afforded by an EV chassis. Anyone with an old VW bus can tell you that power and torque are nonexistent. The Buzz will be near-Tesla levels of fast with VW bus practicality and AWD. These things are going to hold their value and be very desirable.
A final reason why new EVs look so weird is styling. Range is currently the biggest drawback to going electric. Aerodynamics play an enormous role in the design of electric vehicles because manufacturers want to squeeze every last mile into their vehicle ratings. Teslas are famous for their low drag coefficients. EV wheels are smooth on the outside and have very thick spokes to reduce drag. The ID.Buzz above has cameras for side-view mirrors since they're smaller than traditional mirrors. Most EVs don't even have traditional door handles, because even a tiny protrusion reduces range. That's why most EVs, including the new trucks, are rounded and swooping and look very different than existing vehicles on the road.

People are just gonna have to deal with this one. We already know how to make a very aero vehicle yet people insist on driving rectangles around all day. Never understood the love for these massive block fronts every SUV and pickup is doing these days.
Just heard of this new company Alpha, they make a truck, a monster sedan that they call a crossover, and a street car, affordable as fuck for an EV too, supposed to go into production 2023 so I got myself on the reservation list so hopefully they don’t fall through before I give them preorder money

Don’t they sponsor skiers? Could’ve swore I saw a few guys get picked up by an EV company.
the cyber truck is a no brainer for anyone doing landscaping or any job involving medium to large trailer loads every day. my buddy drives a f-250, and spends ridiculous amounts of money on gas, and still wants a bit more torque for the larger loads he's hauling. cyber truck can tow those same loads arguably better, and won't cost $1000 a week for gas
I have driven EV's for 5-6 years before tireing on them. chargeing every 15-250 km! and do a 400km trip without charge? FORGET IT even in a model S or 3

Good point, that's the reason I'm sticking with gas for the time being is the range and the batteries need replacing after so many miles. Maybe the digital batteries will change this or Hydrogen cars if the infrastructure gets put in.
