It is terrible , sympathy to those that lost someone or were affected. We gotta demand better from our resorts.
maybe certain slide prone areas should increase mitigation, and have a “rescue hut “staffed with @ least 1 rescue worker at the top so someone’s nearby for an event, we got waffle stands everywhere, let’s get some rescue shacks

East vail is out of bounds not controlled and ski at your own risk.
No. That is part of what makes it so special. I’ve had some of the best days of my ski life out there. Big lines and big snow out there. Storms funnel of the gore and park on that slot canyon. Ski in peace buddy it’s always sad when this happens.

Terrible and very sad another death in a slide was in Tuckerman's Ravine in New Hampshire proving that no matter where you are you have to be ready for anything.
3 other skiers were killed in an Avalanche in SW Colorado. Very dangerous times now with a layer of old hardpack with a fresh dump on top. Be careful out there guys.

NH accident was in ammonoosuc ravine, opposite side of the hill from tucks. Dont live there anymore so not really up to date on the snowpack and weather but pretty unusual to see activity like that on the west side, most snow from there gets blown over to tucks and isnt really filled in until spring. Interested to read the report if they issue anything
obviously RIP, scary place to be skiin solo there are some serious terrain traps in the lower part of the ravine, sounds like thats where they found him
saw some photos of real ass slabs breaking pretty wide on some open and steep terrain, and that wasnt even in the presidentials. Can’t say i respected it like i should have when i lived in NH but east coast avalanches are a thing!

That whole area is pretty gnar. Sucks one of the guys was the owner of bonfire I think. I like that place in eagle. Try and have some beers there every time i pass through on 70.
Be careful out there people. The fact that CO had a drought and has snow hopefully wont impact peoples decision making too severely.

That NH slide was fucked up. Apparently the guy was buried 13 feet deep. I didn't even know we had that much snow. And my friends call me a pussy for not skiing tucks with them because they don't have avy gear/training...

The snowpack is dangerously unstable everywhere but jackasses are still flocking to the BC like nothing is wrong. ITS ALMOST LIKE WE SAW THIS COMING! OMG.

Yeah man, you're such a pussy for not making stupid fucking decisions. Your friends are like so hardxxcore for going into the BC blind because like man, so chill and gnar. Fuck your gaper friends.
GrandThingsNoob question related to the NH accident. What's the point of wearing a beacon if you're by yourself? Just so they can find your body after?

There’s not that much snow. It was a terrain trap. Meaning, even a smaller slide only 1’ deep or so is capable depositing very deep debris in areas where there is a depression in the terrain (think like a fully or creek bed).
eheathTwo fatalities in 3 weeks outside of the same gate at PC, they closed the gate indefinitely...
I understand that it sucks super hard that people died and obviously no one wants any more accidents, but also I strongly disagree with that being a reason to close off a gate. I don't know that area, but so long as there's no risk of triggering avalanches that put others not in that area at risk then people should be allowed to make their own choices. At the very least only close the gate when the avy hazard is high.

I also agree, but Vail isn't that stoked for obvious reasons. I think they should move the gate to a different location, the one at the top of 9990 is so inviting and you can boot pack without any gear for 5 mins and you're in an extreme avy zone... its too easy, think about how many ppl have been through dutch draw with no gear that just got lucky it didnt slide? Square top is a different story, thats a decent hike.

Argree 100% it should the start of a backcountry uphill route. Not a selfie spot.
That avy report isn't very helpful. It says the buried skier was with companions, and they recovered the skier.
Was the skier dead when recovered?
Were these people wearing gear?
How long between burial and recovery?
What was the cause of death?
What was the conditions report for that day?
Today on Berthoud Pass it was dumping and some old guy popped out onto the road in the middle of fuckin' nowhere with no gear on whatsoever, fumbling all over the place with his skis. I am seeing this all the time this year on BP. Wanted to pull over touch him with the jab.

It's a preliminary report. CAIC will update with all that information once they can compile it all.
I’ll tell you why they did it. Because it’s only a matter of time before some kook sues Vail over it. I don’t blame them. There’s so much absurdly frivolous litigation brought against ski area purveyors on a daily basis. I’m sure their legal counsel advised them to do this.
Unfortunately in this country, no one is expected to take personal responsibility for their choices or their skill. It absolutely sucks.

That's so ass backwards that resorts in the US can limit your access to public land. There are no gates in Canada. You can duck out of bounds wherever the fuck you want and there is zero liability for the resort. Assuming, of course, that the resort borders crown land. Which all do, except Grouse Mountain.
