A serious discussion about resort crowding

Gonna leave it pretty open, but apart from spring pow days 2 years ago when Snowbird was the only mountain open in May or June and it dumped a huge storm, this weekend was undoubtedly the worst lines that I have ever seen. I will always be a resort skier at Snowbird, but damn.

I know the mountains will always be attractive, and everyone deserves to ski, but waiting 30-45 min at a time is not my idea of a good time, nor anyone's. It's clear that the Epic and Ikon passes have made accessing world class resorts far easier, but damn if the crowds are almost unacceptable.

My solution:

A reservation system only for Ikon and Epic pass users. I buy a season's pass to one mountain, and I do feel somewhat entitled to not have to deal with hoardes of ikon pass users from out of state every single pow day. Limit the total number of ikon pass users that can book a single day. They only get 5 days a season, make it so that we don't get a day like this past Saturday where every single one of them was at one resort. Open to suggestions, but yes, as a local, I'm getting a bit fed up. My idea here will probably never happen because lone resorts sold out the minute they got on ikon and Epic passes. I remember hearing that Jackson got 52 dollars per day one year per ikon pass day used. Then you have food, lodging, the whole 9 yards. That's a lot of money, and it sure fucked the resort line, but that's a lot of money.

TLDR: Jaded local who is not alone rants about overcrowding at resorts, and the ikon pass causing it while feeling powerless to do anything.

Dan-ManAlso. Why would someone who has never skied choose to go on a snowy cold day? the runs are choppy af and hard to learn on.

when i teach anyone to ski, its going to be mid to late march, sunny, and 40 degrees +. Not January, 20 degrees, 6in of crud, and lift lines...


I think the problem is that most beginners dont actually know this. They just assume "more snow = good skiing."

My first time riding a real "powder day" (East Coast 6-inch powder) I thought it was gunna be the best day ever. Hadnt really learned how to ride chop yet and was getting bounced all over the place haha.

This right here. New skiiers have no idea how to react to snow conditions and probably don't think about anything past "it's cold" for a given day.

I think crowds are simply a byproduct of the mega-passes taking over the ski industry. If a resort is within a major metropolitan area and is included on an Epic or Icon pass, it's safe to assume it'll be packed on weekends and holidays. That's what the resorts want anyway. Crowds = money. I'm less familiar with Utah, but here in Tahoe, it's the same exact thing. Squaw, Heavenly, and Northstar are packed because they're easy to get to and they're on Epic/Ikon.

If you want to avoid crowds, the simple answer is to go where the tourists don't. Support your local mountain that isn't on the mega-pass. The vibe there is way cooler, pow stashes last longer, and the terrain can be sicker than you'd think.

Or, if it's a busy weekend, drive a little further to a mountain that isn't covered in tourists. If Jerry from SF can make the 4-hour drive to Squaw on President's Day weekend, I'll drive that same distance to Mammoth and skip the lines.

SavageBiffI didn’t dv you, I rarely participate in the karma system, I do have ?s with your statement tho, and I ski primarily alone 9.9 out of 10 X however I feel I’m in biased.
-just cause I’m single, and your in a group of 4, why should you get priority over me?
I feel it takes the same amount of time , if not less to scan me in and get me moving, and whether 4 or 1 person get on the lift at a time doesn’t really get the total who are waiting on any faster there’s still the same amount of time to board.
-I am ok with putting 2 singles on a lift together, however this only speeds it up for us singles not the rest of you, unless, you ski a place w/o singles, and doubles specific lift lines, which, is a problem to begin with, but then two singles could help.


Resorts should have clearly marked single, double, triple, and quad+lanes, and admit in a repeating and fair order, snowshoe does this tho not well marked and it works well but they tend to forget where they last admitted and skip lines sometimes which is when I yell wtf!

finally if your gonna pair singles who aren’t together they better pair doubles on quads, singles with doubles on a triple, and so forth, and while we’re at it we can throw away the whole social distancing, or do you only wanna increase the risk for us singles bc you find us an inconvenience to your entitled group by pairing singles? I don’t mind pairing, but make it equal across the board, and don’t try to make the archenemy two singles are further apart as that’s not a GAURANTEE of not spreading especially with the variants

Not saying to be rude or harass anyone, but leaving a comment that you saw a lot of people with masks down in the line may do more than you'd think.

In summit county in colorado on done of the weekends I've noticed representatives from the dept. of health walking around and on those days there employees are definitely more strict about asking for mask compliance.

I feel so bad for the employees who have to ask people to put their masks up all day.

I’ll add that I’ve been made to feel like an outcast in the lines I’ve waited in as a single, hearing people complaining about singles happens non stop and it sucks, ppl trying to cut pretending like they didn’t see me , that shit don’t fly idc if there’s a group of 3 I’ve had to shove right by , lotta ducks this season in NE

You think its hilarious to fuck with someone who probably is making just over minimum wage and has no power whatsoever? God you're an asshole. Maybe don't ski at a place thats 30 minutes from SLC and has some of the best terrain in the US and has some of the best snow in the world. Like do you honestly think you're going to have a place like that to yourself all the time?

Snowbird is by far the most popular resort in Utah and rope drops on a Saturday have looked like this for longer than I can remember. Even as a young lad when I skied at Bridger Bowl, we'd have some crowded pow days on weekends, it comes with the territory for sure. Like I said earlier, I don't think Ikon pass really ruins the skiing (lines this year are because of covid) it just fucked up the logistics because so many more people are travelling up and down BCC and LCC.

That's fair. Haven't been to DP but I've seen Rose slammed for sure. Crowds are just inevitable sometimes.

Maybe the crowds this year might have a silver lining. Speaking from firsthand experience, I've had a number of friends try the sport for the first time this winter. This year is bound to increase the number of new skiers, at least in the US. More demand will put pressure on the resorts to respond with improved infrastructure. Vail and Alterra corporations are well-oiled machines that will do everything in their power to retain visitors on the mountain. I'm sure they recognize that crowded hills will drive away customers.

And who knows, maybe if we're lucky, some of those abandoned resorts that shut down over the last 20 years will get rebuilt if the demand is there. I'm looking at you, Iron Mountain and Plumas Ski Bowl. One can hope

this is what people skiing at mega resorts aren't realizing...lots of small local mountains are struggling to stay afloat. Yeah big resorts are crowded but that's not the story everywhere. I know of so many small hills that need and deserve more skiers.

My local is a tiny family owned hill and was not prepared for the crowding, people had to park up and down the road(only bad becasue the entrance is at the crest of a hill) and the cops had to come tell them to figure out more paring. So a pretty busy season. Not to mention the jerrys that crowd the park with speakers in the back pocket of there pants.

I’ve been thinking about this the past day or two and yeah. Now that I think about it, I have seen a lot of people on stories, posts, etc. picking up skiing. Like a serious uptick in interest. People I would never expect.

I saw a story today where a guy I know got Faction Prodigy 2.0s. This guy has never skied western resorts and lives in S Carolina. That one was a bit of a surprise, to say the least... He also made it known to me that his skis had “camber and rocker” lol

Also, I swear every east coaster I know is going to big sky this year

I am going to big sky! From the east coast lol! I think their marketing of the most terrain per person blah blah is attractive to a lot, I think a lot will shy away from the wild ride resorts like Jackson , especially jerries and fams which thank god the less the better, I don’t go there to stand in line

Lol I noticed that too. Like you have one fucking job, how hard is it to go up and down a side. You go you go you go. Jesus some of these folks had to be baked out of their mind. There was one chick who legit skipped the line I was in 5 cycles and the guy in front was too pussy to go without permission. That's the only time I've ever yelled in a lift line.

Lol true on Big Sky last winter in December every mother fucker I rode the lift with in CO and Tahoe had a ski trip to Japan booked for March.

Skiiers are like sheep when you step back and think about it.

Especially the rich mountain town resident 50 something trust fund look at me TGR crowd.

This is correct. I am on the way to being, but not being one of these guys. I’m an east coaster, I guess pgh would be more mid Atlantic but whatever , I haven’t any bc terrain to practice and learn on, I do have lots of online learning a ski mountaineering and level1 avy in the rear view, I know what and where I wanna go in the bc and what else to learn to get there, I know the gear to protect myself and save others the risks, how to identify and check the snow, but I certainly do not have “experience” so unless I can go with multiple highly experienced people, I do not go, I won’t be the one who drags another or myself down that path and I suggest others be patient, there’s a lot out there in the bc, but your first time shouldn’t be your last or another’s last.
And we all love and obsess over this sport, let’s not h8 the bc noobs and let’s educate the stupid and the dangerous

I'm actually quite surprised at how shitty that terrain is. I thought Snowbird would be radder. Also, plenty of assholes just disregarding others. Neat.

who in SLC is ready for a repeat of last weekend? looks like the cottonwoods are getting a foot, aka triggering opensnow and ikon powder alert emails again. Gonna be a dope day with better coverage tho, so i cant complain

WoFlowzLol except holidayvalley they announced a new express and 6 pack and the possibility of a new express after those in the next few years to help with lift lines and ease/speed of access to certain parts of the mtn

Ngl Yodeler kinda needs a high speed. It is the 2nd largest base area and tons of people use the lift already. That thing will also be a locals dream for weekday mornings when they get their 2ft lake effect dumps. Laps will be so fast.

Dopplmeyer got the contract and it’s 4million just for the lift and hv is gonna throw it up, I’d hope for 4mill you get a whole lift but idk, I still want cindys as an express so I can lap our shitty jumps, I’m sick of landing on people on the fiddlers jump

They need to put jumps back on moonshadow. I have seen them build slopestyle courses there that are closed to the public, so I know it is a possibility.

Yeah well they hired a kid named Gavin who Chris perks over at the mont taught how to drive a cat, he quit Christmas week. But I did send him a drawing I have for two jump lines on moonshadow and features on fiddlers in early December. He really liked the idea of moving jumps their and he said he’d show it to management. I’m hopeful they did get to see it because i got restricted on ig by them for spamming into hv and hvparks.

That’s fiddlers and then after that would be rainbow box some beginner features, and then the space to the like left after where hoot owl comes in would be a small jump line. Also those large jumps like 30-50ftrs from 2 seasons ago were for a skier and bordercross Noram and spt or arena snow parks built it u can’t remember. Hv doesn’t have anyone that can build parks in a cat for shit.

Dang your taste in parks is way different than mine. I prefer a much more traditional setup. There is not a chance they build two jump lines. That costs so much money.
