Do any of your local resorts groom the shit out of the mountain. Like I get why they do it and that it preserves snow, but I know many people like myself enjoy a good bumped up natural trail. But I just don’t feel it’s necessary to groom every trail ever night
r00kieEvery hill in the Midwest. Kind of required to groom with snowmaking unfortunately.
yeah, its either icy cord or icy chopped up bumps and glare ice rink spots where the snow gets scraped, I think the answer is obvious to which we'd rather have

Even with grooming, you still get those glare ice spots late in the day after everyone side slides whatever fresh snow the groom had.

Yea, for a while in early season my hill had half a run shut down because it was practically an ice rink lmao, almost took my skates out but I prob woulda been fired cuz I work there
SkylineGTR_R32Anywhere east Kansas and they have to groom or you would fucking die
I’m just saying leave the steeper stuff ungroomed. They groom shit flat making a challenging trail easy, which I don’t see the fun in. Then people side scape down making it icy and just straight up unenjoyable. If the just leave it ungroomed for awhile people actually need some skill to get down rather than just scraping not down to ice and it’ll actually be fun to go down
if you’ve ever skied at 4 o clock at the main hill on an east coast resort you’d know why they groom

I mostly ski PA so I know what you mean about the main trails going to shit but hear me out... the steeper stuff in my experience when it gets bumped up nobody wants to go down it and it actually holds some of the better snow. Ya some days it’ll be ice because of freeze-thaw but every trail will be shit on those days

The only way to keep ungroomed stuff decent east of Kansas is to make it hike to terrain. Like when castlerock at sugarbush is closed but the traverse from heavens gate is open. That’s good stuff. Then again, 45 and raining straight to -10 basically means anything not groomed will never be skiable again until it snows more.
ericformanCome to Mary Jane. There are so many bump runs you can ski 1500 vert of bumps on a crowded weekend and see like 3 other people!
Um, MJ gets hella crowded. Definitely not as bad as other places at winter park, but claiming to see almost nobody is just wrong. Also, I would argue that winter park overgrooms to some degree. Maybe it's just their technique or the snow but I notice the grooming a lot more there
Look how crowded the lot is and how empty the trail is! Taken this year during holiday week.

Bumps are only fun in PA when its 40+ and sunny or there is fresh snow.
I mean a lot of stuff where shitty snow will get icy fast anyway, more groomers means more options, nit that many people ski bump runs. Out west where the snow is better even the groomers will chop up a bit throughout the day and there's generally plenty of bumped out natural areas because you can't really groom everything.
It just comes down to the people at the end of the day. Mountains cater to families. These days people expect good grooming when they go to the ski area.

Yee i was there that week too and i never saw runs that empty until the end of the day. Lucky you! I don't really care that much about the runs being busy unless they're extremely busy or the snow is amazing. What sucks are the lift lines

Yea...super gauge is honestly out of control. For what it is worth, my plan is arrive first thing and then do one super guage, then iron horse a bunch, then pony until a line forms (if they are scanning it sucks). Then go to car and eat / drink a beer. Then come back and do a few c-lift laps and then go home. I think this was all the way skiiers right off c-lift, which tends to have very few people.

Yeah thats a good game plan. It's nice when you are with higher level people. I was basically teaching a couple friends how to ski moguls and it sucked

Bro I dont think you know how to ski MJ. What dude said is spot on. There are for sure many areas you can ski on an otheriwise busy day and see only a couple people for a long ass time. Just stick to Ironhorse and Challenger.

Ya'll don't know overgroomed until you come and ski in Europe. They groom religiously, every run, every night. Perfectly overlapped tracks so that even the edge of the tiller track in the middle of the piste is small.
Yeah. We had about 4-5 inches of fresh snow. Local resort is tiny. I was stoked to ski it. Guess what - they groomed it right before they opened. I got there when they opened. So the run had many icey spots. Yay.
I basically live to ski bumps. If I wasn’t such a shitty park skiier maybe that would change lol. That being said, I do appreciate it when there are no moguls in the landings.
hoodratz47God that run looks like pure anus. Maybe it's the oregon skier in me( moguls are not really a thing here).

WP taking so long to set up a good park doesn't help either. Kinda disappointed that's where I grew up learning park as opposed to somewhere like Copper
Honestly a fully ungroomed run that isn't steep with usually wet pow isn't rven that fun. Wouod rather rip groomers or if they groom psrt of the run so that you can build up speed and also have something to ride when that trail becomes total shit.
Or ride the trees. Heavy pow isn't that much fun when its not steep enough. Same with bumps. Idk, just my opinion though. Grew up on that ice coast life though.
But pow days were always something special. I feel like at keast leave the people one trail or a partial groom to get their pow stoke on.

True but honestly thick trees that haven't been gladed aren't my favorite I'm a big mofo and my pow skis are over 200cm long. I like to be able to bang and go full throttle when I am in fresh snow. All the hidden 'secret' spots people jerk off about are kinda 'meh' to me.
Wet, ungroomed Aussie snow. The type that sounds like a zipper and literally stops you. No thanks.

I had to push that friggin slop around all night. Shit weighed more than gold but rode more like shit.
But really shits fun, just gotta get the right days. Even the best pow was sorta dense graupel vibes. Whatever I hope my visa comes through so i can go back this year.
We had a random 20cm day that filled in with wind. Didj (the groomer they put on all the Charlotte pass ads) said it was the driest snow he’s ever skied in aus. The days are there but they’re few and far between!
