Economics question: why are specialized markets with plenty of manufacturers (like disco lights) not more competitively priced?

Take this moving head light from martin.



it is a fantastic light, but its about 1000 times less complicated than a car for the same price. Even a 1000$ smart phone is orders of magnitude more complicated than this light and probably took thousands of times more engineering hours to design than the light.

The light literally consists of a powerful bulb, a few rotating wheels and movable lenses, and a powerful fan.

i understand that in niche markets the vendor can more easily pricerape the customer, but why dont the 10 or 15 disco light manufacturers in the world compete with eachother more on price?


i recently bought this puppy so i can have a dance party in my kitchen. Its pretty sweet and i got a pretty good deal bc these guys are usually 1400$.

I dont know if any of you guys used to enjoy going to Nightclubs to dance to techno under the lights but covid has me bouncing off the walls dying to get some good light effects going so i can break it down in my house.


i got a full refund via my credit card company for the last light i bought from china which was defective and the chinamen didnt even ask for it back so i got it for free.
Pm me if interested. Only thing that doesnt work is the soundactive mode. The light still runs great autoplay shows with tons of effects.

What are the capability differences between the two lights? To me, and I'm assuming most people who haven't set up commercial lighting , they look the same.

Also, are there any rare metals or any other costly components involved in manufacturing?

I feel like alot of you newschoolers would be good dancers, bc park skiing requires coordination and athleticism, both of which are huge gas tanks for dancing. I think with good music that moves you (eg, not country) and some good flashing lights to make you feel out of your body more, dancing and improving at dancing is really easy and fun, even without molly.

I heard Evan knows how to afterbang on the dance floor. Ive never seen it, but ive heard stories from girls who creamed their pants when they saw it.

The more expensive professional lights just have more effects and colors and a brighter bulb but a 15,000$ light is not 15 times better than a 1000$ light. The prices just soar when you get towards the top end.

Sounds like the high end lights are somewhat esoteric, kind of like a RED camera.

Yeah i remember asking a similar question of why red cameras were so expensive. But in disco lighting its not like there is a functionally insane difference between a 1000$ light and a 15,000$ light. The engineering of disco lights is pretty ham fisted. Its not like an iphone with 2 billion transistors and thousands of parts. I dont get how theres such price gouging for top end lights when theres so much competition.

Fair point. I think it could be because disco lights have been a thing since the 80s and making a good disco light with 80s technology might have been really hard and led to high prices that equate with 15k today.



but look at it like smart phones. A good smartphone costs 800-1000$. The top of the line phones from samsung are 1500$. 1500$ is not 15 times higher than 800$.

i got good answers from other econ related questions from guys here and i thought id ask them again assuming they all dont hate me by now and are plotting to kill me.

Less of a market for the features it has? Low quantity produced so not as much saved in manufacturing? Does the company offer better support/warranty?
The industry that I work in is nowhere near the technology level that is in cars today, but our prices are way higher. It's pretty fricken impressive that cars are as cheap as they are.

im just going to ask this question- how would it look if a honda crv cost 25k and a tesla cost 375 thousand minimum?

to me that would seem weird, even considering lights and cars are very different markets.
