can you do your job somewhere closer to the mountains? sounds like you have a pretty dope setup going right now.

maybe you do want to be a ski bum, don't let me stop you, we all have different priorities. but if you can keep your job, still shred a lot, and have financial security, i personally would def do that. especially right now, it's a very uncertain time for employment. i wouldn't throw out what you have right this second


context: i was a ski bum for a couple years in my 20s, one of the absolute best decisions i ever made. but now i'm living a life that prioritizes financial security, career etc over skiing and it's the right call for me but we're all different

I'd say try it out on a small scale first and see how it feels, take a long ski vacation and ski everyday and live somewhere shitty and see if you're down with it or not, but definitely go for it you never know it could be the best thing you ever do

Technically my job can be done anywhere, but making that happen is a different story. Can't really quit this year anyway given COVID but next April I have a lot of stuff that vests and that would be decision time.

Your context though is kind of part of my argument. I mean I have a graduate degree. It seems like it's much easier to drop it now and ski at 27 and go back to the life at 35. The other way around will never happen. Again the idealism...


yeah i hear you for sure and def agree it's easier and makes more sense to do it now rather than later and like you said that jibes with my decision to ski bum earlier and then join the office bitch world rather than vice versa. i think in your case, i would just want to make sure you don't irreversibly throw out some of what you have worked for

i'd say if you can, try to dip your toes in a little, as opposed to dropping everything and going full ski bum. i bet you'd be very capable of trying to split the difference a little, maybe do your job or similar closer to the mountains and see if that scratches both itches, or like the dude above said, maybe some time off to try things out without precluding yourself from getting back to where you are now.

like i said, there are so many variables and i can't speak for what exactly you value the most in life. so i'm just kind of saying out loud what thoughts have guided my decisions on this stuff because i'm extremely happy with how things have played out so far. i think you're smart to listen to what your heart is telling you and to try to see what options might work best for you because it's all too easy to just keep marching forward and never make a big move that gets you what you want.

i'm just playing the conservative voice here because you've obviously worked hard for your current setup and i'd want to be sure you don't throw anything away before realizing you truly do value the stability you have right now more than you currently know. for every Office Bitch who hates their mundane life there's a dude who shredded for the past 10 years and wishes to god he had some money and health insurance. and we're going to see some strange times now in the employment world, thanks to Covid

I moved to SLC with the intent of living here. I dont know what work you do, but it's not super mormon in the city and there are tons of people from all different backgrounds. There is a difference between bum and weekend warrior. When I think ski bum, I think of the guy who skis all day and buses tables in the evening. Weekend warrior is exactly as described. I'd recommend trying it, as I love skiing, but I think if I were to truly 'ski bum' I'd feel a bit stagnant in terms of my life. I'd say if you can find work, absolutely give it a shot or you'll always wonder what could have been.

I'm a ski bum and it's great, but definitely hard to make work financially. I'm able to do it by working 82 hour weeks snow making at the beginning of the season and living out of my truck when needed.

I don't know what you do for work but the move is BUY an Ikon and EPIC pass. AKA have no life in the summer and work minimum 80 hours a week so you can travel a ton in the winter. Best place to live SLC!!!!!
4.5 hours to jackson, 5 hours to Big Sky, 9 hours to mammoth/ Lake Tahoe, 7 Hours to Colorado
Then you can ski everywhere which is what I did this season.
As far as work most Bartenders and servers crush. Depends on your experience and most importantly who you know. I know I make more than the majority of college graduates in their early to late 20's so I'm not complaining. In the winter if you live in SLC work 4-5 days in Park city only nights then travel 2-3 days. During Christmas time and other big events when it's busy work everyday than take time off to go travel. So you can ski 4-5 days a week wherever you live then travel 2-3 days. Vail and Aspen are bomb spots since the money is great there. I just don't like small resort towns and being surrounded by same people so I like SLC.
If you're trying to feel like a ski bum then you might want the resort town feel; Summit county colorado is a bomb spot. I lived in keystone and breck for 3 years which was tight. Not as snobby as Vail or Aspen so it's more of a chill vibe. But nothing small like Gunnison or Durango.

This. I landed a great job in a ski town here in CO, work 5 days a weeks and can still get on the hill 2-4 times a week. I agree, def couldn't do the 'ski bum' thing, but this setup works nicely as is. I get to ski plenty and make enough money to live comfortably.


*Side note- looks like you're from Indiana OP? I was a long time fort wayne native and I 100 percent understand the need to get out of that fucking place.

If your job has the flexibility to be done anywhere, I’d probably investigate that as an option before jumping ship to start your own small business or getting a local job. I grew up in the mountains, but moved to the east coast to work in banking after college. About 6 months in and I realized I was making enough money to do pretty much anything within reason, but I had no time to spend it and I was miserable. I ended up jumping to another company to work remote, and, since all my coworkers are in different time zones, it frees up a lot of my day to ski, (whereas if I worked locally I probably wouldn’t have the same flexibility). It’s definitely easier said than done, but I’ve always encouraged my friends in a similar situation to look into the remote option before applying to new jobs

Do it! I started skiing 5 years ago and it's changed my life. The mountains are worth the risk in my opinion :)
skiindianaThis was my third season. Year 1: I skied 4 times. Year 2: 25 days. Year 3: 34 but was on track to hit 50 easy. I have fallen in love and I'm not sure what to do about it...

I don't live near mountains. I am lucky enough to have a good job (do not have parent money) that I can afford to basically fly anywhere, any weekend, and ski anywhere. I'm one of those awful people with Ikon and Epic. I'm the reason your parking lot is crowded.

Honestly though, I cannot stand not being in the mountains. Its pretty much all I think about and I feel like I'm making a mistake not just packing up and moving. More recently I have thought about going somewhere like Oregon, SLC, or very rural CO after my next season. Ideally I would just buy a very small house or shack-like situation and get a local job or start a small business with the intention to just self-sustain. Other than skiing I don't really have any luxuries. I drive an old Toyota I bought for cash. I don't have fancy clothes. I came from a lower-middle class family so that life is comfortable to me.

Is this crazy though? Have any of you actually done this before? Should I just accept my corporate life and realize I'm being wayyy too idealistic?

Gotta make sure that all your bills are covered honestly if you want to ski everyday. I know you can make it grinding it out being a resort worker and living in employee housing and whatnot but that kind of lifestyle drains on you. Its hard to keep healthy doing that stuff and living that life while either broke or just barely broke....and forget being able to ski everyday with how much resort workers get boned with workloads nowadays...almost all my lifty or mechanic friends were putting in 70 hour weeks last season due to understaffed departments and honestly youre not skiing a whole lot when you got that kind of schedule

Imagine yourself on your deathbed, and then imagine all the things in life you regretted not doing. If moving to the mountains and investing yourself into them is one of those things, unplug and make the life you want to live. The corporate world is nice, but the relationships we develop with the mountains and the communities around them are fulfilling on a deeper level. Hope that helps, happy you caught the bug.

I would say do it. I had a corporate job like you which was great for income and a career but I knew I would regret it if I didn’t try ski bumming for at least one winter. Was the best time of my life and hope to do it again next season

Also I will add, if you look at it financially from an “opportunity cost” perspective, it’ll never make sense quitting your Cush job to become a ski bum. But just create a quit your job stash and once you feel you have enough, go for it and don’t look back

Send it! It’s not a sustainable lifestyle long term but they’ll be the best years of your life. You’ll regret it if you don’t. And when you do go back to focusing on your career, you might as well do it in one of the cities out west. No point in suffering out east your whole life.

I've spent ~7 years tryna make living & working in a ski town somewhat like it is in a bigger city, and I'm out for good starting tomorrow. So I quoted this part of your post to say in my experience it ain't gonna work the way you want it to.

Better to make a shit-ton of money before winter, before moving to a resort town looking to squeeze all you're worth for itself, then live cheaply out of your shack or your car and don't let anything come before skiing. Bounce if there's better conditions elsewhere, and roll out when you're done to go make that money again for next season.

I thought I wanted to do the same. Went to Hood for 3 summers, eat sleep and breathed skiing but went back to normal school/life the rest of the year. Honestly, kinda got it out of my system and now I’m content with a 20 day season (though would love more when I can get it) and normal life. Everyone is different though

as someone who lived with mr millers voice in his head growin a year older till I was in my 30's with multiple life skills and foodservice and construction careers, before loading a moving truck and driving west to utardia with the old lady who would become my wife and spancer.
you can do it now or do it later
advantages to both
anybody can bum
anybody can ski most every day if your willing to sacrifice
and its not a one or the other
Plenty of people live quite comfortable middle class lives own homes nice cars and fat quivers and ski 5-6 days a week
as do young living in a skibum house eating ramen and smokin kratom cause they cant afford good herb bums
At anytime you can say fuck this and go live a comfortable cooperate life or live a simple ski bum life
but no I would not trade the past 2 1/2 decades of skibum sacrifices for the ability to ski at a level worthy of the bum moniker for anything else
There is no real right or wrong way my every morning dawn patrol professional bros git up and go skiing is still a bum
there is no magic number 100 days is a level most would consider bummery but If im not skiing im working on someone elses skis
I had seasons were I counted the days I didn't ski on my hands but probably haven't hit a hundo in the past 3 but I have a flyfishing addiction that grows every year
but its more of a state of mind and a willingness to do what it take to git the shred
go for it but shits addicting and potentially life changing

Let me tell you my tale of being a reformed ski bum.

it all started at age 3 when my ski bum dad first put me on a pair of skis at Mad River Glen in Vermont, since then I’ve been a ski bum. I graduated high school a semester early so I could get a job in the tech shop there and ski every day, I also held down a part time night job at a movie theatre that same semester. In college I arranged my schedule to ski 5 days a week racking up just over 100 days every year. Graduated with a mechanical engineering degree. Lived in vermont the summer after college, built a bus, drove it to Jackson with a few buddies, bus broke down and we got stuck there. Got resort jobs and crushed like 150 days a year for two seasons at Jackson working whatever we could find that started after 5pm. First year we worked night shifts in a warehouse, second year I worked night shift tuning skis.

Now I still live in jackson (technically Victor Idaho but close enough) but by pretty much shear luck I got offered an engineering job designing rich peoples heating and air conditioning, and now I’m somewhere between a weekend warrior and a ski bum, I got around 50 days last year since my boss is cool and lets me take off fridays as long as I get to 40 hours.

do I regret it? Not at all, and I think it actually taught me some pretty good lessons. So I’ll share some advice for potential ski bums out there:

1: you will make just above minimum wage in a ski town, this is totally fine and will pay just enough to live by if you learn to spend your money well. This helped when I got my real job and literally doubled my salary, I still spend about the same I was before but now I can actually pay off my debt in a timely manner ( car and student loans).

2: rent in ski towns is insanely expensive, like way more than college town. Be prepared for $800-1000 a month, you are very lucky in jackson to pay under 700.

3: partying is fun, just try to stick to only doing it a couple times a week maximum, except for special occasions. I’m not gonna go around telling people not to party, but it is expensive and when you’re hungover its hard to shred pow all day, around here theres a thing called disco night in the winter every Thursday, perfect example, go hard on thursdays only spend the rest of the time skiing. As mentioned in this thread drinking and drugs really get to a lot of ski town folks, theres not much going on besides skiing and partying so just choose to do it semi responsibly, and jackson is super harsh on DUIs so don’t drive.

4: make friends with other ski bums, pretty much every ski bum has some sort of hidden skill that becomes helpful in the off season when you’re trying to get projects done so you can work all summer and ski all winter.

5: don’t join ski school, the rest of the resort employees think ski school is annoying, plus they make you ski like a PSIA nerd.

I moved to Revelstoke fresh out of high school to crush the 100 day seasons, right now I'm halfway through a geoforestry undergrad and only get 40ish days a season. As soon as I'm done, I'm gonna ski my face off for another couple winters and then see where I want to go from there.

When I'm 65 with no healthcare and making minimum wage tuning skis, pray for me.

A lot of the bigger ski resorts at least offer healthcare and pretty significant amount of paid time off for full time employees. You just have to live off like $15 an hour.

I would not recommend Denver, granted I've never lived there but all I hear about is how its actually a decent ways from real skiing.
skiindianaSeconded. Really love getting insight from so many of you all. Nothing will happen until after next season but will update my choices. GF wants to transfer her job to DEN but she thinks getting 50 days while working is already enough

skiindianaAgreed. Denver is a little overdone. I don't even like flying there for weekend trips much anymore because the airport is like 1 hour just to the beginning of the foothills. If I lived out there I wouldn't live in Denver metro.

Still have some love for Vail though because that's where my Marriott points (used to be a consultant) worked three seasons ago when I just wanted to try skiing.

If your background is in consulting, another option would be to try and get back into a role with weekly travel. It’s definitely easy to burn out, but it’s pretty much the optimal weekend warrior set-up. I have more than one friend who relocated to a cheap city for lower rent and then instead of going home on weekends, they flex travel to a different ski resort on their pass. Not quite ski bum life, but a decent compromise and a good way to see a bunch of new resorts in one season.

Hey man,

I was pretty much in the same position as you, had a nice corporate job back in Chile which paid well and offered me some kind of financial freedom. Nevertheless skiing is one of the things I enjoy the most in my life. I knew the company I was working for had a subsidiary in SLC so I played all my cards well and got transferred there with a better position and even better salary (just to chase skiing while I still had a decent job).

Here is my story:

I decided to rent a place in Park City to be as close as possible to the mountain and just commuted to SLC for work (wasn't bad at all). I was kind of a corporate ski bum if that makes sense. Again I got lucky to find a place for around US$650 my own room & bathroom. I live pretty simple, spend most of my money in skis, mountain bikes and travelling the rest of my savings (biggest part) I invest it.

Now here comes the big part, ski town lifestyle doesn't go along 100% with a corporate job. Most of my friends and roommates works for the resort, or jobs in town so I was basically living the ski bum life while I had a corporate job.

I partied every single Wednesday and Sunday (best nights in PC in my opinion) plus some Thursdays and Fridays which means most of the days I went to work and meetings I was crazy hungover or still drunk. I had completely fallen in the apres ski lifestyle. Somehow I just got used to it and became a functional alcoholic for the whole winter.

Skiing wise, I skied every single weekend, and skied at least two nights in the week days (Woodward or Brighton) and often finished in the clubs or bars after. For deep pow days I called in sick or said I was doing home office. I can say I quadrupled my days skiing compared to my life back in Chile.

Now, you start to ski so much that the stoke of being first to get in the mountain and leave the last decreases by time. I'm 28 and consider myself a pretty good skier but my improvement rate is decreasing more and more (i'm not trying to double cork or backflip anymore) most of the days I go shred the mountain and occasionally hit the park. What I'm trying to say is that there is a range of ski days in the year that could keep you that stoke which in my opinion is close to ski 2 or 3 days a week.

In the short term I was having a blast. I had the best powdays, best park sessions with the homies, seeing multiple girls, sneaking in every single hot tub and pool in Park City, getting free tickets and lunches from my friends at the mountain, parties, etc. etc.

In the long term I was sacrificing my job and whole career (I was very close to get fired which means I had to go back to Chile due to my Visa) I was sacrificing my health, not sleeping, poorly eating and drinking way to much.

Currently I decided to move to SLC to balance my life a little bit more (focus more energy in my career, healthiness, relationships, etc. while I still have the mountains incredibly close).

Do I regret it? Absolutely not.

I think the best decision is to keep your job and move to a mountain city (SLC is perfect) so you can pursue your career while you still ski insanely amount of days.

I dipped my toes this year and have to say that it was a lot lonlier than expected. Most of my friends could only ski weekends so I ended skiing alone a lot. Be aware of this as it takes away some of the stoke of skiing.

Until you realize skiing alone is the fuckin shit. It’s also the best way to meet new people who probably shred harder than you and will push you to be better and show you new zones.

Instead of spending your early 20s ski bumming. Try and spend 5 years accumulating as much money as you can by working non stop and investing in cryptocurrency. By the time your 24-25 or whatever you’ll have enough to ski bum for 4-5years without financial hardship.

A few years ago in summit co we got like 3 feet of snow on the very last weekend of the season. Literally nobody was on the mountain. I was skiing meadows all by myself—i didnt run into a single person— i was completely alone and it was awesome. Makes you so introspective being up at 11.5k feet surrounded by trees and the snow on the ground making everything super quiet so you can hear your own heartbeat.



i love skiing with friends but i agree skiing alone is sometimes really fun.

skiindianaYeah I mean I ski alone probably 95% of the time. Since I don't live near the mountains I don't have that many friends who both:

1. Have the income to fly to the mountains every week
2. Want to fly to the mountains every week

One goal for my next year is to establish more ski friends, but usually I have the opportunity to meet and ski with people I meet on the lifts. Sometimes I feel like doing that, sometimes I don't.

You fly out the rockies just for the weekend?
