abar.I'll go and build my own features to hike no matter what, but I live in Oregon. Some guy on ns said he heard they might do an early summer pass instead of a spring pass, no real evidence for it but that would be awesome I can't be buying $100 day tickets

Yea. I was living in Portland but moved back home as soon as school went online. I want to drive back out there but my plan was to be working up at T-line. I can either find a job elsewhere and hopefully find time to hike up, or stay home at my parents and not pay rent. If they had a cheaper summer pass or some other deal I would probably go back out to OR tho. Idk at this point.

I think that you aren't grasping the concept of this whole ordeal.
This is far much more than a few hundred skiers and snowboards in a small area of America, borders have been closed between countries, not to mention continents.

Why on earth would this even be considered? The last thing that is going to be deemed acceptable or essential is a niche activity which will provide very little economic benefit to the country while risking prolonged months of restrictions.

Just chill out, relax and enjoy the spring summer warmer temperatures. Skiing has been cancelled this year.

People seem to think this lockdown is to keep people from moving around and avoiding the spread until a CURE or vaccine. But that’s not true. A vaccine is estimated to take 12-18 months. We are in lockdown simply to get hospitals ready for a peak of infections. At some point, business will open back up. There is no way we will be in lockdown for another 12 months, let alone another 2. And if there is no lockdown, businesses will be allowed to be open. Maybe there will be social distancing precautions, hopefully there will be. But I’d businesses are allowed to be open, then Timberline is going to be open.

It is to stop the spread... that is the whole point of the lockdown. Why would you continue to move around and risk other people (some of whom might be more vulnerable to it than you or your peers) when you could stop spreading the virus by doing nothing?

They already did the spring pass this year it started in March and is valid every day that Timberline is open until Memorial day or maybe longer if they decide to extend the winter/spring pass season as they have suggested they might do on their website. Some people already got the spring pass and got a bunch of days on them before things ultimately got shut down. Everyone is bummed but really we have no info here in Oregon yet. Are we going to decide that it is ok for people to share chairs that other people have just rode and line up in lines and share pit toilets? IDK at this point they don't even allow parking at undeveloped parking lots anywhere in Mt Hood national forest or any of the other national forests that have ski areas and snow so we can't even legally just park someplace and hike in. Logically they would allow people to go hike up hill in more dispursed areas first before opening the ski areas. At this point I think it is too soon to predict if we will have any real summer options or not

Yes. To stop the spread to enable hospitals and hospital workers to have time to get the supplies they need. Once this is achieved, businesses are reopening. Timberline is a business just like any other.

They can't open because the National forest is closed so they really have no option now. I am guessing once it is legal to do so they will open if they feel like they can make money

Wear a mask in public, wash your hands, maintain a safe distance from others, stay updated with the information being released by the CDC and other health experts. All good.

But life isn’t stopping for another year. It’s just not going to happen. Places will be opening up, guaranteed a lot of states will be rethinking what constitutes an essential business and will be opening nonessential businesses soon after. I bet a lot of this is going to be happening in May. And I’m betting almost all if not all states by July. So I’m just saying summer skiing is by no means canceled. Revised, maybe.

When will the hospitals and workers get the supplies they need? When people in America continue to protest in large groups for their right to do what they want?

Social precautions dont seem to be doing a great deal, look at the UK and Canada, they implemented precautions... these precautions are only as good as the people who abide by them.

As far as when are hospitals getting what they need... I have no clue, you tell me. But it’s been over a month of preparation at this point, I hope they’re getting somewhere.

People seriously can't grasp the goal of this lockdown. You don't start opening things back up just because things are ever so slightly getting better. The only reason we are said to be nearing the peak/slowing down is because of the lockdown. It takes a couple weeks or so for the effects of a lockdown to be noticable, it's not instant. As soon as places start opening up, this thing is gonna blow up even worse than it already has. And just because our fucking moron in chief wants to reopen and some states are pushing for it too doesn't mean were in the clear. Look at Kentucky for example. They saw their biggest spike in cases after the protests. And you say that a big point of this lockdown is to buy the hospitals some time to get essential equipment. And yeah, that is true but I think you are underestimating just how long that is going to take. We haven't had a good supply of PPE and tests yet and a bigger demand for them (reopen = more people infected = more PPE, tests, etc needed) certainly won't help either. Based on how it's looking so far, I wouldn't except summer skiing this year. It sucks for all of us but that's the harsh reality of this whole situation.

Also, the virus dying in the sun is simply just false. And if Timberline were to reopen with heavy social distancing guidelines and 2 people per lift or even 1, it might be somewhat effective. But that whole plan relies on people not being fucking dumbasses and being able to follow rules, and everyone knows that won't happen.

No you are correct, it is definitely sustainable, so the quicker people get onboard with the idea of putting things on hold temporarily, not rushing and forcing things too soon, the sooner it should be back to normal.

I’m not agreeing with these protests or to states opening back up right this moment. I realize it’s going to take more time and that going out in groups of people and protesting is pretty stupid. But I understand that these people are upset and probably unemployed with no savings.

Right now something like %15 of Americans are unemployed. Nearly everyone who owns a private business is losing money. Sure, with your stim check you can pay for a month of rent/mortgage, groceries, and maybe your car insurance, maybe your phone bill, maybe your student loans, maybe a car payment. But what about next month? How long before people really lose it? People are already in the streets protesting.

There’s just no way the states are going to keep people locked down for all that much longer. I’m lucky enough to have 2 parents employed as teachers, I am getting paid time off, and I’m lucky enough to live in a rural community where we have had 2 cases in the entire county. But there are people in vastly different situations.

This whole situation is just fucked. I don’t know of anyone who has a perfect solution. Goodluck to all

Palmer loading deck gets like a mosh pit in the summer. It is the opposite of social distancing. Maybe all the racers and summer camps canceled and it won't be crowded this summer but if that happens how will Timberline make enough money to hire everyone back and get the lifts running? I think there are a lot of questions to be answered before we will know anything and it is a huge bummer to be in this situation. Kinda like the back seat of a volkswagen bug if you know what I am saying

New plan: One person with COVID goes to a big warehouse where every single member of NS is sitting on the floor. The infected proceeds to cough on everyone. Best case scenario, the lockdown gets the number of cases down to 20k or so (extremely optimistic). Lol there would be fucking nationwide riots if we were in a complete lockdown for that long. There is literally 0 chance of that happening. No matter if 1% of the country dies people will not be locked down that long. There are no experts saying we will be on lockdown until a vaccine. Many experts are advising against such a thing. Some German health experts are recommending opening schools to try and gain some immunity with the low-risk population. Not sure how that makes a ton of sense considering a lot of kids go home to parents and grandparents but what do I know

People couldn’t survive off of no income. Can you imagine how unhealthy people would become? People would be dying due to malnutrition and starvation and would have a way higher chance of becoming infected with COVID-19 or any other disease for that matter due to poor eating habits since they won’t have any fucking money to go buy food for their families, let alone the stress and insanity of being locked up. Mental health issues, suicides, alcoholism, abuse, all of it would be skyrocketing.

Like I don’t know what to say at this point. Anyone with pre-existing health issues that they can’t control, I am sorry. This whole situation most be really scary for you. Anyone who is afraid for their grandparents, I can understand.

But like many people dying have smoked cigarettes their whole lives (which we have known is bad for you for quite some time), are obese (I know obesity can be related to mental health issues and it isn’t always a clear preventable thing), or they are just old and their bodies are already susceptible to disease.

A year-long lockdown isn’t a solution in my book or frankly I don’t think it’s a solution in anyone’s.

The problem with reopening ski resorts is unlike normal businesses recreation thrives on out of state travel, even more so then golf. I live at a resort now and even with nothing open and closed borders into the state there’s still tons of people from out of state coming here on the weekends, you can’t stop people from traveling unless you straight up block every road into the region.

Yeah both those things are serious issues but they buy us time. Mental health issues are inevitable in this situation but they aren't happening instantly, and buying ourselves some time is huge right now. As of right now, we're having a 9/11 worth of deaths every 2 days in the US alone. It's a hard decision, but were essentially picking the lesser of two evils in this situation. Nobody is denying that lockdown has many consequences. But the difference is, alcoholics and people with mental health issues can recover, dead people can't.

The food for school kids is a problem that can be greatly alleviated with money. Some schools have continued to offer kids the option to be sent food at home. The only logical things that would stop all schools from doing that is money. And if the US government can shell out fucking 500 billion dollars to corporations, it can feed school kids. A lot of these problems are mainly due to lack of money. The government has somehow successfully brainwashed the public hard enough to believing that big corporations and billionaires cannot take a hit no matter what. The government never stops to consider that maybe feeding people is more important than some random billionaire buying their 5th yacht. The coronavirus relief bill included 25 billion to food stamps and children's nutrition and 500 billion to corporations. So you ask, what about them? I guess they're considered unimportant by the government. We have the resources to help feed kids, but corporations are more important I guess.

Even if the lockdown hypothetically ended tomorrow, I'd still be surprised if any Canadian bike parks opened at all this summer, as the vast majority of their workforce are typically foreigners, who have all now left the country. Not sure how Whistler would recruit 2000-3000 people in a month.

If Alterra is unsure resorts on their pass be able to open in the fall, then summer skiing seems unlikely at this point. May definitely isn't happening.

I’m disappointed that a disturbing amount of fellow NSers (and the world in general tbh) aren’t grasping this, and thinking downvoting fake internet points will open things up vs accepting the facts and reality of our situation. I get that it fucking sucks and we all want to ski, but we gotta be real with ourselves and recognize skiing is a luxury, not essential. CLQYeah man at the very least people for all over the US will all come and converge on govy! All that economic activity from ski bums who camp out for a month is totally worth risking the spread of the virus to Govy and back to all the places those people came from!!

Yeah fuck that. I’ve been quarantining at my fam spot in Govy since late march since moving outta SLC a month early and the community is taking social distancing super seriously minus whoever the large squad is that keeps hiking the rails above Blossum trail. Most things are shut down, the whole Tline access road and every NF site is gated right from 26, and the only food options in town (Charlie’s and Tacoshoppe) calling in your order then they place it on a ledge/chair so nobody has to get within 6 feet. The typical summer Govy crowd that overruns the town like packing the huckleberry full of kids to get their milkshake/sometimes isn't even a single parking space on the main drag just simply can’t happen in this current climate. That stresses the towns limited resources, and puts workers prepping/cleaning all the vacation properties that get rented out to everyone at unnecessary risk. There’s no medical center in Govy, closest is Sandy during daylight hours which is already super limited, or Gresham any other time.

a_burgerThe problem with reopening ski resorts is unlike normal businesses recreation thrives on out of state travel, even more so then golf. I live at a resort now and even with nothing open and closed borders into the state there’s still tons of people from out of state coming here on the weekends, you can’t stop people from traveling unless you straight up block every road into the region.

Yup there’s no way around that. If Timberline opened up there’d be travelers flooding in from all bordering states in the PNW and beyond, The parking lot is already dozens and dozens of different states license plates on a normal day, and people are hungrier than ever to ski rn.

If you can hike from home in Govy I think you are good for recreation in undeveloped areas. Forest service parking is closed. All sno park spots are technically closed too and that is basically all the parking. Are people still using the public spots around Govy? Technically it is all sno park and closed until 4/30 even in town

That is why I think there is a chance that Timberline could open in the summer, because if tons of other businesses are being allowed to open back up within the coming months, resort owners and employees are going to be pretty upset come June/July assuiming they aren't getting stim checks every month.

"Allowed" is highly debatable depending on what region of the world is and which way your local government leans, and definitely doesn't mean we should. I think governments need to set more black and white guidelines of what is and is not essential, because besides it being essential to most NSers mental health to ski often, I'm not seeing how anything about skiing is essential during a pandemic. Also basic Timberline employees afaik make next to no money and just do it to get a pass. There are a ton of places hiring rn like grocery stores/amazon/delivery services/etc that would pay more than timberline anyway and you can start working now instead of waiting for a day that might not come for quite some time.

again, I know its less than ideal options, and not the "fun" option, and if we could just press a button and go back to normal and have skiing everything would be great, but that button doesn't exist

She falls under the "essential" business category so she is allowed to be open. So she stays open mainly so that she can pay her employees. Also, keep in mind my aunt has a family of 5 to take care of.

Now someone could make the argument that this could be spreading the virus quicker and that it isn't essential for people to be getting their coffee fix every day. Granted, she has obviously been following social distancing precautions (you can order inside and then take your drink outside).

I'm just saying that businesses are going to want to open. As soon as a the law says they can, I'm assuming that they will.

So essentially which ever businesses are best able to lobby the government, will be able to open. Timberline is also dependent on the forest service though, which is unlikely to be opening any time soon.

Yes but an essential business isn't whether is essential to the owner, it's whether it's essential to the general public to live during this pandemic and as multiple people have said in this thread, skiing isn't essential.

Everyone on this site gets it sucks that spring has been cancelled and that summer will be more than likely cancelled as well (my season was February to the middle of March because of injury), but if this laissez faire attitude continues towards this the longer it could go on.

I'd bet that a lot more people will be bummed if next winter season is cancelled because everyone decided to rush back into things.

Windells is still selling camp, starting June 14. (Just checking their website) I won't speculate what I think happens, just saying they are still planning to operate this summer. Sure, they could operate while Timberline remains closed to the public also.

Here is a draft from the Oregon Governor's office about phases to re-open the state https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/6843437-Reopening-Oregon-Framework-Presentation-v4.html This week they are talking about "sector specific" including outdoor recreation. Obviously a ski resort such as Timberline also falls into other sectors (ie lodges, etc...) If you look at page 16 - it seems like if we got to phase two or greater that ski areas could re-open.
