Replying to What tape/solution for DIY pole grip repair

I have some nice poles that I like with good pow baskets but one of the grips is coming apart. It has a crack that goes like 90% of the way around the grip and now the top half wants to pull off like a lid. This part that is coming apart is on a seam so I am thinking I will try putting some glue in there. I am then planning to over wrap the grips with some sort of tape. I have big hands so I could use some fatter grips anyways. Thinking I will continue the wrap below the grip in case I use these poles for touring or something.
What should I use? People have suggested some sort of rubber mastic tape from the hardware store and also hockey tape (not sure where they sell hockey tape) and also road bike grips which sounds probably more expensive than tape
