Something nagging me about my uni ski club...

It is standard practice for ski clubs to turn a small profit to subsidize activities and provide a small discount for those who spend their time organizing the trips. As for the skiing ability of the club’s members, well, everybody has to start somewhere. Some of us were lucky enough to learn to ski when we were young, others learn later in life. Looking back, my college ski trips were out of control. Wishing you loads of fun either with or without the ski club :)

The practice sounds pretty reasonable to me. It's kind of fundamental to starting and growing a group of this type. The group needs some operating funds so the don't have to charge to cover food/drinks/paper products, etc., for every small event throughout the season; not only would that be a pita for potential attendees, it would also consume a lot of administrative hours better spent elsewhere.

What Uni do you go to down south? I'm up in Brisbane and I fucking wish we had a ski club at my uni. Then again, I'm studying music, so everyone at my school are massive (friendly!) dorks.

That's pretty standard for most ski clubs, the exec team has to put in work to organize the trip so it's fair to discount the trips for the team. Also the club should be running at a slight profit in order to carry on operations into the next year.

Most of the exec team for my ski club would be considered intermediate skiers, we're all having fun on the hill haha why gatekeep trips with skill levels?

eheethJust found out my uni ski club actually makes a profit from the price they charge for our annual ski trip, to allow both the exec team to go at a discounted rate BUT ALSO so they have money to run other events throughout the year for everyone, including people who didn't actually go on the trip. Is this kinda reasonable, or am I just getting worked up over something that I shouldn't be?

This particular ski club isn't great regardless, the people who go on it aren't great skiers, and the president is a green run skier which says something in itself...

Everyone is neglecting that op said the profit came from a surplus charge onto the trip. This means that for folks who didn't go, they weren't charged. That's not a great way to run things since it is not fairly distributed amongst the group. Unless that extra money was going directly towards supplies and food for that specific trip. A better way would be to require an annual participation fee even across the board. Depending on the size of the club, this could be very minimal. Also some schools recognize clubs if you make them official. A portion of your tuition probably goes towards student activities; ya know, all the events and free t shirts and shit. Some schools utilize the student activities fund to help support sports clubs as well. I would definitely look into it as there may be some money in there.

When I was in college I was prez of our Outdoors Club for 2 years. Every club needs some kind of fundraising and you have to be able to do activities all year to maintain interest and membership. If you guys don't have dues or any other fundraising then you'll definitely need to generate revenue on this big trip. If you did other fundraisers and were a more active club then you would also attract better skiers eventually.

My club was very active, lots of fun, and ran budget neutral until some idiot messed it up for everyone. He was all pissed off that some of the officers got to go on the spring break trip and he didnt, so he went to the university risk management office and told them all about how "hiking trips are super dangerous and everyone goes on trips to get super drunk." They ended up shutting down 2 clubs and basically neutering the outdoor club, so now instead of everyone getting to have tons of fun on lots of trips nobody gets to have hardly any fun as they arent allowed to do any overnighters or trips further than 50 miles from campus or trips more intense than light day hikes for that matter.

TL;DR dont worry about it unless the officers are doing something particularly heinous with the trip fee.
