Be me, turn up to hostel. I’m staying in Hakuba for 5 weeks. Everything is going fine with my fellow guests until they realise - I’m partially autistic and the only thing I know how to have a conversation about is skiing. Every night I’m adjusting my kit while people socialise. They look at me awkwardly and give me little smiles as I change the afd on my bindings.

I just walked into the communal lounge and there was an obvious lull in conversation as I placed myself on the couch. Their conversation resumes after a brief awkward second. Right now I am sitting here with headphones in drinking Asahi superdry while watching videos of Candide Thovex.

My crush is sitting across from me, a cute brunette from the states. We get along great but I’m pretty sure like every other girl she sees me just as a friend. I mean after all what do I have to offer? I’m an idiot a loser a microphone abuser (plus 10 points if you get the reference)
There’s also some fucking v loggers here, but it’s fucking weird because I have 0 personality and they keep pointing the camera at me. It’s like an episode of the office. And I’m the joke.

I hope the conditions on the mountain tomorrow are better. I wanna send some 3s. I also don’t wear a helmet anymore because to be honest I don’t care if I die.

Did you already pay for the full 5 weeks? I would have given up on skiing at this point and just explored Japan. Checked out Tokyo, Kyoto, etc

ask the girl and/or the others if they want to grab lunch or dinner or just walk around and sight-see or something. you say you're bad socially but everyone feels a little awkward to some extent in new social situations and they're away from their home turf too, right? unless you're really unbearable i'm sure they'd like to have you as a companion sometimes. i'm not saying you're gonna seal the deal with the girl but i bet you'll have fun regardless

also you say you can only talk skiing but you're all there for skiing. chat them up a little about it and learn their skiing backgrounds, it's an easy in


also wear a helmet, if you die from a head injury it won't be pretty or easy

i actually contemplate (all the time) that everyone is just super nice to me because I’m retarded and everyone just let’s others know I coming there way.


Some days I look in the mirror and say to myself “what special ed teacher forgot to label me with sever autism and where’s the short bus I’m supposed to ride?”.

Honestly skiing is what saved me from a life of hard monotonous trade work ( and stopped me from a successful trade career depending how you look at it).

And I can tell you the day I knew it was no coming back from defining myself as a skier. April 2011, 7th. Employee only ski day at buttermilk with 9inches of fresh powder.
it didn’t matter how fucking awkward I was or how many chicks turned me down that season. I was fulfilling what i felt like my true purpose. Skiing powder with some people, friends and alot myself. But I was so fucking happy I was tearing up.



So op put that brain bucket back on and know your not the only one out there who feels out of place in this big blue planet.
Just means you gotta keep searching for what makes you happy.
And your gonna have to wade through some shit days to get there.

Only you could have five weeks off to ski and be upset by a lack of snow.

Oh yeah, It’s very possible you’d have a TBI and not die without a helmet, and that means you’re alive but stuck suffering from it forever

Casually hang around the lodge a bit longer in the morning and 'coincidentally' arrive in the boot room while she's putting her's on, then just strike up a casual conversation and start walking towards the mountain and before you know it you'll be on a chair together. From here up to you, she might be a shit skier and you won't actually want to spend the day with her and just go separate ways at the top, but you can suss it and just see, she might rip idk
