Boot Pain Around The Rear Of The Foot

Hey guys,

I am in desperate need of your advice.

Every time I put my ski boots on I get a searing pain from the rear + inside of my foot, right in front of the heel. The bottom of my feet do not hurt nor the front. From what I gather it might be because the boot is too narrow around that area. It feels like it is pinching the inside of my foot. I had originally gone to a reputable local ski shop to buy these boots, explaining that I have foot pain, I told them that it was because I have a flat foot but now I'm wondering if the flat foot is not the cause of the problem.

Now I have to decide. I can go back to the local shop and talk with the boot fitter about this pain, likely buy now boots which will probably from me about 400$CAD. Or I can go to a podiatrist and see about getting a custom orthodox for my ski boots that will cost about 600$CAD. My only major hesitation with the orthotics is that the pain comes from the top and side of my foot, not so much the bottom. It may have nothing to do with my flat foot.

In your opinion, if I had to put the money somewhere, where should I put it?

I'm not saying your bootfitter is bad but a really good bootfitter could be better.
Not sure where you live but might be worth the drive to another bootfitter to figure out whats going on before dropping another $600.

FYI you shouldn't pay more than $200 USD for a full custom orthodontic insert for skiing.

OP what province you living in?

had the same issue before. Try to get as much shit done to your boots by the bootfitter (punching out the back, heat mold, etc) before buying new boots. In my case i had to get a brand new pair

Id take them into the bootfitter first and see what they can work with already. Chances are they can pimp them out for you and your boots will feel all-new again.

New boots should be the 2nd option after getting work done on your current ones and aren't satisfied with it and it'll cost you but its a wortwhile investment.


It cost me quite a bit but I got new boots + some custom work done + ortho stuff in my left boot for a foot injury and i wouldn't have had it any other way.

Possibly, that being said I likely didn't explain my problem very well. It was my first new pair of boots. I also bought them about 5 years ago, used them for one year and than stopped because of the pain. Its only last month that I decided to get back into it.

I live in Montreal, Quebec. I was reading about another boot fitter that's good but he's about 2 1/2 hours away.

There are custom foot beds that run about 170$ but I was told it may be better to go tons podiatrist instead, with insurance it would only be a little bit more.

To be a little helpful though since I am one, it could be a few things depending on where exactly the pain is on your foot. Most likely you over pronate, and when you weight that foot your ankle collapses down into the side of the boot. If you don't already have them orthotics are the answer (custom or premade can work depending on budget, but get them done at a ski or running shop specifically for your boot). If you have them already a varus wedge on the heel can help post you in a more neutral position to take pressure off that area. Couldn't tell you for certain without seeing the boot, but that's my best guess/solution.

2 1/2hr drive for a good bootfitter is totally worth it in my opinion.

I would say find a bootfitter and use them versus a podiatrist for the fact of they can work on your boots as well. Building a relationship with a good bootfitter can do wonders if you have fucked up feet and need modifications or other work done on your boots.

wait.. is it internal or external where the pain is?

if it's external, and you just feel pressure on the inside of your foot just fore of the medial maleolous, then it might be the boot putting pressure on your navicular bone..

In which case, you either punch the shell to relieve the pressure, or change the liner if it's something like a seam that's causing the pain.. or you take a knife and cut out the navicular bone. the latter might be pretty grusome and would require some recovery.

if it's internal, see a doctor first and ask them about what might be causing it, such as a pinched nerve or unknown injury.

I went back to the boot fitter that I bought my pair from today, they just got a new machine. I explained that I had bought the boots there a few years ago and he said that they would punch it out for free. I should get them back in a few days.

As for the insoles, i had originally bought a pair of sidas low insoles but still had mad pain. As for the wedge il definitely look into that if the punching doesn't work.

That also answers my question if podiatrist vs custom skishop insole.

If worse comes to worse I guess il head to the other boot fitter a few hours away. Im dying to get back on the slopes. Thanks for all your input. This forum is awesome!
