They buy when the price and time is right. just like any other large company doing acquisitions
They will never own all the resorts like people think
While many of us hate their model and practices in general it’s made skiing more affordable to the average Joe and improved many resorts to offer a better product.
If you count skier days across the country per year, which is a number never really known as private companies hesitate to report it, I would be curious to see what percent is Vail owned. If I had to guess, 30%.
Why do small resorts sell to them? Well they haven’t bought many small ones. The handful of feeder hills in Midwest are the only small ones directly bought. Other few came in the Peak Buyout. Companies sell for usually one reason and one reason only. Money.

Most smaller resorts sell because they look at the future projections of replacing aging equipment such as chairlift infrastructure and balance it against how much the owners will make in a sale and it ends up being a pretty easy answer from a financial perspective.

Vail bought my little hill this year but I know the parent company wasn't doing well. Like others have said the Midwest hills are just feeders for the bigger resorts out west etc.
All times are Eastern (-4)
