Replying to Forward lean 101???
Hi everyone.
after years of skiing 99% on piste with slalom skis and race boots, and a few years without much skiing, i am transitioning to skitouring and offpiste (and to skiing with a backpack)
After one season last year, I'm still in the process of getting accustomed to my new gear, and i notice that my touring boots have three forward lean settings.
i'd like to experiment with this but first, i'd like to understand what are the pros and cons of going one way or the other, what it feels like to have too much or not enough forward lean - i have a hard time finding clear wisdom* on the subject.
one thing i really notice when skiing my touring setup, and i wonder if this can be related to this post's main subject, is that i find myself in the backseat much more often that with my "on piste" gear. It i especially noticeable in situations as:
-anytime i need to absorb a big bump.
-occasional carving on groomers, especially if i'm aggressive and get some rebound from the skis when releasing pressure. Every change of direction feels like a much wilder ride than what i'm used to, i find myself thrown back and ready to take off...
*i am attaching a pic of my max active dorsiflexion as i see it mentioned often in relation to forward lean. Passively i can get just a little more (not much)
touring setup: scarpa F1 evo, volkl amaruq 170cm.
piste setup: 2006 tecnica diablo race 110 and 160cm slalom skis from a small italian brand.
i'm 170cm/5'8 and 70kg/154 lb, quite heavy in the upper upper body.
cheers.
