Official SPLAT thread

SPLAT is a gap jumping contest, winner will get skibladezzz, and there will almost assuredly be some other prizes along the way!

Rules:

1. You have to jump and ride out of a gap as defined below:
If your gap does not have an obstacle you are clearing, it must have: A defined takeoff zone, a low point between the takeoff and landing, and a Lip (not a knuckle) on the landing. A disaster will be considered a gap if you are gapping at least two kinks on a rail and landing will be the spot in which you land on the rail, not the end of the rail. A park jump does not count, nor does a straight cliff.
2. One point for will be awarded for every 5 feet gapped
3. Gap size will be determined by the poster first, judge (myself) and members second if necessary (as in you're overestimating or underestimating).
4. Points may only be earned on the same gap once per season per competitor, but you may submit as many different gaps as you would like for this competition. Your total score is a cumulative total of your submissions on the year.
5. Gap is measured from takeoff to landing
6. All footage must be from this season
7. Multipliers: 1.25x multiplier for a gap over a harmful, but not deadly (to you) obstacle (a rope, or cattrack or jerry)
1.5x multiplier for a gap over a harmful and potentially deadly obstacle (road or stream or crevasse)

Competition Start Date: Dec 1st
Competition End Date: May 1st

Submissions are through the thread only, Leaderboard is based on your username

landed, but if someone jumped 20 different 10 footers over the course of

A couple of natural features I have in mind at my home mountain have around 50/50 drop to distance ratio, but a narrow area that you can take off and land. They both have plenty of rocks to gap over, one lip being supported by a fallen tree and the other a rock.

Any exceptions for drops with hardpack/ice landings? Vert drop to hard pack transitions?

IMO we should count the top 3 (or more?) biggest gaps per person. Would probably make it a lot easier to calculate who got the most points, so that there aren't any disputes. Also, by counting different numbers of gaps per person, I could see people with a bunch of smaller gaps having more incentive to bs their numbers, as they'll add up more than someone with a few massive gaps.

Any bonus points for jumping over people? I don't mean having 20 friends stand under the landing, but let's just say I happen to gap over unsuspecting jerries...

Your picture definitely would count as a gap. If you're gapping over rocks, I'd say it should count, but if you guys feel otherwise, downvote this post.

I'd put gapping jerries in with the 1.25× multiplier I think. I'm keeping it as unlimited entries, since I want this to be as accessible as possible to everyone.

That said, if there is significant outcry over anyone BSing numbers repeatedly, your fate will be determined by the council of NSers upvotes and downvotes to determine if you are disqualified(which you likely will be. Don't BS your numbers, you will get disqualified.

Sounds good. I'm probably gonna measure pole lengths and leave pine needles or something to mark distance.

Lol wut? I was gonna say like 6 feet from where you got air to where you landed. Fuck yeah on first sub. I feel like that deserves a multiplier in itself but no way that's 28ft lol. For comparisons, pitchers mound to home plate is 60ft. A Tahoe suv 17ft. Your average sedan, 15ft. We don't really have any obstacles to guage a measurement except that building and your skis. Make sure you measured starting at takeoff first air to landing. Measure horizontal distance only.

Sorry not trying to be a dick but wtf

I won’t be up till next Friday to get a better pic, but it is bigger than 10 ft and less than 25. I hate to say trust me, but since the video is taken from behind the jump, you don’t really see how big it really is

looking back 28 ft is definitely too much, I’ll get a pic with my pole on the gap next Friday. I’m riding my 172cm rock skis in the vid, which equals about 5.5 ft if that helps. IMO I think it’s at least 3 ski lengths from the vid.

Just for reference, would this count? I would normally call it a cliff instead of a gap but you gotta clear a massive fallen tree. It's under summit at Soli so Utah bois probly recognize it.

I mean, you are going over a pretty sizable tree. If you're hopping over a small bush, I wouldnt' call it a gap, but I would say you are gapping that tree. Fellow people of the thread, upvote if you think it's a gap, downvote if not.

So guys, I'd say there's a solid shot I could put together a monthly prize of some hoodies and maybe a set of goggles and some other stuff too. What kind of monthly subcategory would you guys want to see? Biggest gap? Most creative? Best trick over a gap? Would love to hear some ideas from you!

I think overall 'Best Gap' might be cool. People could vote on which gap from the month they thought was the coolest. If there were lots of submissions for the month, you could just pick out like 5 clips or something that seemed like they were the best, and then it could be a vote from there. Then it would really be a combination of all things, size, creativity, and style, that make the gap look cool, that people would be voting on.
