On Hong Kong and China

In case you didn't know, we have now reached the 13th weekend of protests in Hong Kong aimed against a bill which arose from a real issue, but I certainly agree has major political ramifications for those in Hong Kong. Basically it would allow for extradition from Hong Kong to other areas including mainland China for offenses punishable with imprisonment greater than 3 years. Keep in mind this is extradition to stand trial, not extradition of a convict. The bill has been 'shelved' but could be restarted, and protests against the bill and against Carrie Lam, chief executive in Hong Kong have continued. China hasn't done tons yet, but they have now moved onto the stage of sending in some troops as a thinly veiled threat and arresting protest leaders. This hasn't worked yet and there was still a major 'illegal' protest this weekend. These things are huge, they've had hundreds of thousands of people involved who are literally fighting not to become a part of China, which seems to be what China wants at this point. 5 people have committed suicide in direct protest of the this bill and China's attempts to control Hong Kong.

Now that the background is done, my question is this. China has major economic and military pull. If something like Tiananmen square were to happen in Hong Kong, would it be enough for other countries to get involved?

TLDR: The people of Hong Kong are fighting for their democratic freedoms, and the rest of the world needs to take better notice and put the onus on the Chinese to not crush their democracy

Ah yes, the glorious human rights council will save them. It currently has some great quality members in Qatar, Afghanistan and Pakistan. All of these countries are such bastions of justice and human rights.
TRVP_ANGELIm sure the UN will give them a stern warning.

If a massacre were to occur in Hong Kong I dont think it really would cause that much of a legitimate stir. Other countries would condemn it but it would most likely end there. A much more dangerous situation would be if China threatened Taiwan which is something that I wouldn't put past china given their aggression in the south china sea.

Hong Kong's sovereignty will be depleted by 2047. that extradition bill is trying to fast track the progression in favour of the ruling elite in mainland China. i can understand how worrisome living in that situation would be like, essentially living in a corporate-democracy "government'' to a unicameral-communist ''government''.

The people of Hong Kong are fighting for:



Withdrawal of the extradition bill from the legislative process (as opposed to suspension)
Retraction of the characterisation of the protests as "riots"
Release and exoneration of arrested protesters
Establishment of an independent commission of inquiry into police behaviour
Universal suffrage for Legislative council and Chief executive elections
Resignation of Carrie Lam


here's to all the people fighting for everlasting sovereignty in Hong Kong, i salute you! lets hope the city can keep being autonomous without the aid of mainland china

Not my problem so fuck them... No it's gnarly what's going on over there. Been reading up on Hong Kong history from Wikipedia and shit and it's a situation thats complex. I always just assumed Hong Kong was China but it's like it's not but like it actually is. I blame the English.
