Hey everyone, I had just picked up a pair of the new 2019 K2 Poachers and I am very excited to use them. However, I am still stuck on which poles I should get to best compliment the skis. Any suggestions? I was looking into the K2 Flipjaws and the K2 Freeride 18s. I would also like to stay loyal to the K2 brand if possible!

Get some really cheap poles from a second hand store and then cut them. Boom. park poles
Go to the local thrift store and get the oldest looking ones that you can in the size you like. Many modern poles with all their light weight bullshit tend to break much more easily. What you should realize is that a pair of poles from the 70s-80s, while they may look out of date, they have lasted for decades, many modern poles are lucky to survive your first tomahawk. If your not touring a lot then theres no point getting something super light either. The whole point of a pole on the downhill is for balance, so realistically a lighter pole does less to stabilize you. Always cracks me up that a stick with a grip is something people will ask technological questions about, and are willing to spend hundred+ dollars for.
I am a big fan of Goode composite ski poles. I quickly bent every aluminum pole I ever had growing up and finally spent the $60 and have never had a problem with them. I actually like that they flex a little too and if your bored you can twist them around each other in the lift line.
the Goode's are sweet but the tips eventually break off. Will it break off before an aluminum pole bends? Who knows. Volkl alu poles have been pretty good. What I don't get is that everyone is on 95mm+ skis ferda pooder, yet cheap poles come with gate bashing baskets. to get proper baskets, you have to drop more $ and cut and glue that shit together if it doesn't fit.
Fuck buying poles. I just got a seemingly brand new set of scott poles at the dump, and plan to use them til they snap. Also, ig you can find bamboo poles/stakes at a hardware store, especially the kind that is thinner on one end than the other, then put the baskets with built in tips, and whatever grips you prefer. Even as far as telescopic touring poles go, I found a pair of beefy ass black diamonds that had to be at least a decade old, and never broke them, even though I fell on them plenty of times. A friend of mine accidentally snapped his poles on his run to the mogul course on a comp day, so he ripped his grips and baskets off, and chopped/smoothed a couple branches with his edges (don't fuck with national forests). He ended up using them for the rest of the season bc he was less worried about getting impaled if he landed on them.

Not if u put a bar plug in the end or zip tie the grips on. It’s not like biking where you’ll be deathgripping the shit outta your bars, where throttle grip will actually become a problem. Park poles do nothing but sit in your hands so it should be fine.
