CaseyThat wasn’t my question. I asked you why it is necessary to amend or repeal the 2nd Amendment when restrictions on firearm ownership have already been deemed constitutional.
In in other words, the Congress is able to pass laws about this, that is what they are there for. It is not the 2nd Amendment that it is in the way of that, it is the political will of the majority of the American people that has prevented gun reform. Idk what to tell you, that is how democracy works.
You can bitch and moan about the NRA until the cows come home, but the reality is without popular support and member donations they would have zero influence on elected officials. As much as people hate them they are one of the few examples of citizens organizing around an issue that they care about and executing their collective political will in our democracy.
Forget for a second that the issue is guns and insert some other issue that you happen to support and the organization starts to look a little less terrible.
Its how the supreme court will rule a law that is unconstitutional. Congress can pass any law they want, even if its absolutely ludicrous. As Trump found out, higher courts (Judicial branch) can bar the law from being enacted. With the second amendment, the supreme court can rule that gun control is unconstitutional. You can have the best intentions in the world, but the constitution is the fundamental of a country's governance, that will override anything.
There is no real democracy in US politics. Its not the people that want change, its the representatives in the Senate that have all the card. They are motivated to keep their job, but also have to follow party lines.
The reason why the NRA is so powerful is not the donations they bring to a candidate, its the actions they take to ensure a candidate wins at all costs. They will fund smear campaigns, social media campaigns, get businesses to join and try to get the word out to vote for their guy. The weapon industry is huge and every violent event raises the sales.
The NRA must go back to their roots; an organization that promotes gun safety.
