After testing out a few different recipes, I mixed a few ingredients, made a few tweaks, and came up with my own version of the Burger Dog.
500g ground beef (yield: 9-10 Burger Dogs).
1 tsp ground cumin.
1 tsp ground ginger.
1 tsp salt.
¾ tsp black pepper.
½ tsp ground cinnamon.
½ tsp ground coriander.
½ tsp cayenne.
½ tsp ground allspice.
¼ tsp ground cloves.
Hot dog buns.
*Tip–you can add 1 tsp cardamom, ½ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp paprika and ½ tsp garlic powder for a more complex flavour.
Whisk cumin, coriander, ginger, cinnamon, allspice, cayenne, cloves, salt and pepper together in a small bowl until combined.
Knead the ground beef with your hands to break up the structure a bit. After a few minutes, add the rest of the ingredients to the meat and mix in well. *Tip–do not use lean ground beef, as it may not mould properly and dry out once cooked.
Divide the mixture equally, then mould into sausage shapes. Make sure the meat is spread to an even thickness. Cover and refrigerate for two hours. Note: You can prepare them the day before and keep covered in the refrigerator—but omit with salt so the meat does not toughen.
Lay the Burger Dogs on a foil-lined baking tray. Grill on high for 4-5 minutes each side until completely cooked through and a little charred on the outside. Serve with your choice of sides.
