Getting into skating

Ok so my friends and I wanna get into skating. There’s a few small parks in under half an hour. I can ride a board decently but can’t do any basic tricks, Ollies, stalls, etc. (my trick vocabulary isn’t very expansive lol). Also what are some cheaper brands that will do the job for a beginner? Decks, trucks, wheels etc.

Kind of in a similar mindset as you for the last couple years, I just got all the pieces and assembled it myself. Bones reds bearings, thunder high trucks, basic Mob tape, whatever wheels you want. It was cheaper and more fun than buying an assembled board ready to go, but maybe not quite as polished.

I suck at skating and don't know much, so don't take this as the best way to do it, it's just what I did

Buy something from a friend or grab a cheap complete. CCS has blank completes for like 55 bucks.

Skate a lot and you’ll be surprised by your progression. If you’re a good park skier you’ll probably pick it up fast.

order something off skate ware house they have build your own complete deals. I would get some venture trucks and for decks I like real low pro decks. Baker DGK and death wish are nice too. Bones reds bearings and hubba or bones wheels.

This is what I did to start. You can upgrade each part of the skateboard as it wears out.

I would recommend starting with vert. A 4 ft mini ramp will give you the balance you need. You can get stalls, rock and roll, etc.. in the first few says. Then you need to spend endless hours on flat ground practicing Ollies, before you can consider the rails. You don't need a skatepark to land your first kick flip, just some motivation and a parking lot or driveway

go grab a blank from your local skate shop. youll be able to stand on the boards and see which feels the best as well.

Yo! Like everyone above said, getting a blank deck or shop deck is the best place to start. (I personally Iike plain black grip.) Realistically if you're just starting, your first deck will last 6-12 months depending on how frequently you're riding.

What you're really going to want to spend on is trucks and bearings. Bones REDS are a great beginner bearing and I'm a fan of Venture. I'd also suggest starting with high trucks which naturally give you more leverage for ollies and turning.

(IMO most wheels are the same, and I am firmly on the 'white' side of the color vs. plain wheels debate)

Lastly, whatever you do, do not buy a walmart/sporting goods store complete. These are absolute garbage and are NOT REAL SKATEBOARDS. Go to any skateshop, tell them you're new and theyll hook it up

Its just like a pair of skis. The more you beat em up the faster they wear out. Some people ride decks until they literally snap in half. It can take a few years or a single summer if you ride hard enough.

Today was my first day skating in a few years and it was like starting new, but I can happily say I can Ollie and drop in again.

I don't know if you have already bought a board but i don't really recommend a ccs board. They aren't very durable. I did a normal treflip on one and landed a little nose heavy and it completely snapped off. It was only like 1 week old. Blind sells the best boards for their price. I have ollied some decent gaps and landed nose heavy on a blind deck and it held up great.

There are a few cheap enjoiiiiiiii skateboards for about 35 to 40, but if you want some of their pro decks they are a little more pricey.

Haha yeah Flameboy and Wet Willie. I thought the cartoons were funny as a kid but would never actually buy one as a deck. Hookups is making a comeback tho hahaha

Yes, it improves your park skiing a ton. Skateboarding improves your balance and you will be able to ski rails easier if you have good balance.

didn't know where to post this but I've returned to skating after my meniscus bs from last year. This week was the first week I've felt 100% and progression has been insane. Now I can clear each gap at my park and I've figured out boardslides again. I'm gonna upload a shitty skate edit in the near future :)))))))))))

It's been like 13/14 years since I had a mini ramp in parents garage Id skate. Had one in driveway too but was big enough to bmx so rarely skated it.

Looking for non skiing activities cause crowds here are whack af for school holidays. Obviously it snowed a bunch as soon as i got a board. Skatepark is like 200 feet from my room and rarely gets used so looking forward to trying to relearn how the fuck to skate.


Even if im horrible, girls just wanna have fun.

I was out the entirety of last summer, majority of the ski season, and now im finally feeling real good :)

Also don't worry ab forgetting ur tricks bc once you get back in the groove it all comes back easy!

Day 1 was so shit i didnt wanna ever go out again. At least skiing you can just slide your way down I have no flip tricks, the only rail is 2 feet tall and i was scares to drop in. Dropped in on a bank a couple times but just felt sketch.

Rode today and forced myself to drop in. Pumped around a bit and started tryung some lip tricks. Got a couple things. At least now I can get around the park and learn stuff to add. Skating is shit if youre shit. Happy to at least be able to pump around now.

Motivates me to go out more. Was out for 2 hours today. Mtn is crazy busy sometimes and skatepark is empty and I can see it from my room.

Sweet!! Keep going and you will just keep getting better. Wish I could ride mine, I am still out waiting for my knee to get to 85% so I can.

true. My knee is pretty bunk atm too. Kinda been keeping me off the snowboard a bit.

Day 1 was shit. Day 2 was a bunch of progression. Day 3 shit but betyer than day 1. Today was day 4.

Skating alone after working grave shift. Was a little tired but wanted to get out . Started off pretty whack so figured maybe id try something new. Hopped onto this ledge off a pyramid pretty half assed a couple times but wasnt gonna have speed to go anywhere.

Decided to try and learn boardslides o this flat ledge. A foot or just over tall. Only rail is 2 foot or so which seens a bit aggressive for the park.

Never got one but from total random idea and half assed attempts got some lretty good tries where I slid 4 or 5 feet and came off the edge. Obviously started pretty slow but worked up the courage to pick uo the speed and commitment.

Considering i dont really have any foundation I was pretty happy. Goal at the end was to drop in on one side, pump the pyramid, get a bs rock and roll(if thats what its called?) And then land the boardslide on the ledge after.

Nothing crazy but trying to learn some different tricks/work on skills in different areas, but also get some sort of ground floor flow.

Like on the mtn, you might not get that 270 in the park, or 5 the jump, but you can. If you cant even ride through the park or ride in general its tough. Trying to break through that in skating still.

I can do relate to riding after graveyard shift, I would go skate when I would get off shift at 5am.lol good on you to do it, it is def tonight doing it like that. Take care of that knee, hope you are our sliding on that snow when you can. Keep practicing that skating too,lol.

Decided to practice my WWF moves against the concrete today. Shockingly concrete won both rounds.

Still couldn't get a boardslide but was fairly close. Hoping tomorrow. I just wanna get one under my belt.

Tried a few other tricks that I wasn't very close with but its a start. Was landing my only lip trick much more regularly. Still more miss than hit but can almost get them back to back.

I think eating shit hurt my confidence a bit but unsurprisingly just getting out more has me feeling better.

The pyramid thing I was kind of sketched even rolling over at the start and now pumping it comfortably.

Hoping to get a few more tricks so I csn try to link some stuff. Didn't fuck with the kickflips today but did a few different 180s and shove its.

Considering I was sketched just rolling around the first day Ive def improved, but still a hit mess.

Gotta start somewhere though. Its cool to be this excited about going out and learning tricks. It reminds me of learnjng new tricks as a kid snowboarding. A little more sketch since 30 and concrete isn't soft but having fun.

Kinda reminds me of challenge rails at the ski areas. We had and s to down last year that took me like 30 tries.

Hoping tomorrow i can get a boardslide. Then might try some flip tricks. Sucks there's no small rail though. Ledge doesnt feel like the best thing to learn boardlides on but whatever .

Trucks are loose as fuck and can barely ride but no wrench but was determined to boardslide today.

Had really consistent attempts sliding 4-6 feet of ledge. I get that o cpulda just done a few at the end but wanted something proper. As proper as a one foot ledge can be.

Finally got one after so many close ones.

Goal was to eventually be able to get the bs rock and then do a boardslide. Got 3 of that. And though improving would only get like 5 rocks a day. Got 15 plus today snd 6 in a row. Goal was 3 in a row.

Basically kinda hsve a sketchy line now. Drop in, pump pyramid. Bs rock, boardslide then try a whack ass flip trick.

Trying to work on those a bit as well noe that I got some foundation.

Basically day 6 was fun as hell. Wasnt gonna skate today cause been a few weeks off the board other than splitboarding and fresh park rebuild for today. But saturday and too crowded. Decided to skate. Wasnt feeling it.

Really started going for the boardslide. Ollies got cleaner so changed my angle and started sliding real clean and coming off almost making then consistantly.

Now that I know I can do em i gotta keep on till theyre dialed.

More comfy pumping around the park now but could use work and need some flip tricks. But progress feels good.

Trying to learn to skate at 30 sounded pretty sketch and day 1 was super shot but now im really enjoying it and trying to learn new stuff/get better on a board in general.

Hopefully can tighten trucks a bit for tomkrrow.

skating is great for building core strength. As long as youre at least popping ollies and doing stuff that needs you to keep your whole body taught.

Looks like we off the skateboard this week. I got a quickie in yesterday before scooter children ruined it. Like legit children on 2 front wheel scooters. But I rode my snowboard 2 and 3 days ago and just waxed up for tomorrow. Hoping to rip the resort after work and then go for a tour once it gets torn up.

Update: Have finally been skating for the past few days. Feeling amazing. Almost feel better than before I broke my leg. Super weird
