So, where is SKI BIG AIR in the Olympics?...

So, I realised the other day that the Big Air event in the Olympics was only put into PyeongChang for the snowboarders... I don't know about you, but this makes just a LITTLE bit angry. How could they accept the event for snowboarding, but not for skiing? Especially after snowboarding has had the lime light in the Olympics with halfpipe way before skiing even got close. How is this fair for our sport or in general for that matter? Once again snowboarding has the upper hand in the eyes of the punters, I believe skiing and snowboarding should be equal. Fire away, what are your thoughts on this?

This is the test event from last year but I'm assuming it's similar. Fairly laid out on some of the trips. Also billy morgan laid out the 3rd hard sizing up the quad.

I think it should be decent.

the olympics is a private business. They rely on bringing new competition to bring hype every olympic and have very few in the bag that are actually interesting and new. So they keep skiing for china in 4 years to basically have 2 new competitions in 2 different olympics instead of having it all in korea. Just like apple releases updates and features periodically for their iphones that they have had in the bag for a long time.

basically the way i see it... but i'm bummed guys like vincent gagnier dont get their time to shine because of that.

Def looks a little mellow but more of a step down than X usually builds. X games big air jump is usually around 12-13 feet tall, but you lose some of that

I wonder if they maxed out the height they could go on the drop. I think it'll be fine though. They ran the test even in the same spot and everyone was easily getting trips, possibly could have squeaked a quad around.

Yea if I'm not scared looking at pictures of it it's not big enough for big air. That being said I'd probably still poop a little hitting that.

I think what they're trying to do is get a snowboarding equivalent of skiing aerials, which doesn't necessarily mean make the biggest jump possible.

Was actually at that venue yesterday. Gap isn't super impressive but the lip is pretty steep and the landing looks long. Pretty sweet venue tho, the run in is built over the road so you can drive under it and the landing ends in the same area as ski jumping. Needless to say the ski jumping jump is a little bigger

It’ll be here in China.
One of the FIS directors is on our crew as a liaison for the Olympic events were doing (I work broadcast, so I’m here at the Olympics covering the freestyle events).
Just like everything other event that goes into the Olympics, they need to have a certain amount of world cups, then an over all Chanpionship event.
So the big air events that are going down now in skiing are a start, but more need to happen to follow the FIS guidelines and qualify for an Olympic sport.

I was thinking of kidnapping one of the aerial chicks, teaching her to hit rails, how to grab, and entering her in the slope for the win!

You may have to teach her to ski as well.
Some of these skiers don’t know how to turn or anything. They go, hit just, land, and stop

lololol. We were just talking about that. If they could even make it down a blue trail.

That said, some park skiers(not pros) are pretty horrid skiers and struggle to make it from feature to feature.

But yeah, skiing lessons are in order if there's any time left over.

I think they said 74 feet to the knuckle, I wondered if the was a bigger jump for the men until I realized they aren't at a ski area and it's just tracks of snow and this 900 foot tall inrun they built.

The Olympics has basically turned into an international Mtn.Dew commercial. They, like any business look at ratings and statistics to see how many people they can get to watch. To NOT have skiing as a BIG AIR event is a joke, because you know if they had it for skiers there would be no doubt who would be going the "biggest".Just watched some of the women's "BIG AIR" event and was underwhelmed to say the least. Seemed more like a hit at any ski area, anywhere. Not so "BIG" at all. It just doesn't seem to be Olympic caliber one bit. Pretty ordinary actually. So, laughing at the Olympics attempt to get more millennial's to tune in, by dumbing down the difficulty and skill it takes to qualify for an Olympic Sport. There was a lot of ass-sliding/ landings going on for this Olympic event! Let's hope they even up the score and include Skiing in the "BA" next time- whether or not it brings millions of new viewers or not.

That jump looks like something I would hit. I want to see the top pros in the world do tricks on a jump that scares the shit out of me from behind my TV. Also no Quads happening on that thing.

just find one with a grandparent in a country that has no entries (lets say hungary for example) teach them nothing but travel the world and enter events. you'll be coach of an olympic athelete in a mere 4 years. no grabs required!

Since there isn’t an aerials in snowboarding, maybe that’s their way of giving snowboarding time in the air. Wouldn’t be surprised to see it in the next Olympics tho

Sorry to go up this subject,

The real reason that Big Air was in Ski this year is the fault of the FIS / AFP who had very little big air event before 2016.

But that's changed a lot since 2016, and the big air is starting to take off with women's competition at the X Game, a world cup circuit that is getting bigger every year and next year will be the first championship of the year. FIS world with Big Air competitions

It has very big chance that the Big Air is part of the Beijing Games in 2022.

The IOC will announce if the Big Air Skiing will be part of the program for Beijing 2022 on July 18th.

There is a good chance that the IOC accepts Big Air

Here is the list of all the event that FIS has proposed for 2022

Freeski Big Air (Very Good Chance)
Freestyle aerials mixed team event (Very Good Chance)
Snowboard cross team event (Very Good Chance)
Snowboard alpine mixed team parallel event (Small Chance)
Snowboard parallel slalom (Small Chance)
Snowboard mixed team slalom (Small Chance)
Telemark parallel sprint. (Small Chance)

There are only a certain number of "freestyle" events allowed compared to regular events. Freeski big air is in the next winter Olympics. (Confirmed by Joss).

This is false, no limit event in freestyle skiing but according to the IOC's 2020 Agenda Directive ;

The IOC to limit the number of athletes, officials and events for the Olympic Winter Games to
approximately:

- 2,900 athletes
- 2,000 accredited coaches and athletes’ support personnel
- 100 events

But as I said earlier, 4 event proposed by FIS does not increase the athlete number or add a new facility.
