I came to that conclusion as well. Literally traded a ht for a big switchback in a parking lot 2013 or 14. Not that switchback is the most epic beer ever but I like it, and was tired of the ht hype wagon.
Don't get me wrong, I like ht, but I just hate the small demand hype bullshit.
It's a good beer, but the hype is stupid. A lot of my friends have been selling it at festivals the last 5 or 6 years. Was always getting them from them for free like "want a beer" or trading things for them. Groundscored a cold one on a bridge outside of phish roch in 2013. Idk, just over it. Tired of hearing about it.

100% agree.
I think HT popped onto the scene at the right time when people were still starting to get really interested in craft beers and it has ridden that wave ever since. it's still in the top 20 beers IN THE WORLD on BeerAdvocate.com, which is asinine. the hype was created when it was being slung out of a restaurant in Waterbury and that was literally the only place you can get it. Now it's available everywhere in VT.
I can think of a handful of beers I like better; Swish (Bissell Brothers), Substance (Bissell Brothers), Julius (Treehouse), & Dinner (Maine Beer Co.). I'll drive a couple hours from Boston to Portland for these every once in a while (or an hour to Treehouse) but I am not flying across the country or hopping on to a forum and trading for a fucking four pack. Craft beer hipsters are the beer equivalent of sneak "hype beasts" or whatever they call themselves.

Next time you're in Portland, hit up Foundation Brewing Company for some Burnside Brown Ale. I'm not a even a huge fan of heavier browns, but the Burnside is one of my fav beers ever.
Also, BB is getting huge, love to see that from homegrown Maine company. (I'm from Portland originally but live in Boston now and see their merch EVERYWHERE.)

will do! my girlfriend & I love Portland. we spent a weekend there in April (I think) and spent some time at the local breweries, but BB was my favorite by far. I also have a pretty major obsession with The Holy Donut, but that's another story.
I'm sure you're familiar with Night Shift in Everett, being that you live in Boston. Can't wait for the warm weather to come back so I can spend some saturday afternoons there.
Heady topper may be overhyped but it’s definately not overrated. It’s a phenomenal beer. I think people like to hate on it because every shit bird out there likes to tout heady topper as a gold standard for beer, and truthfully that shit does get old.

No it really is a great beer, I don't think anyone's saying it sucks, but it's just stupid. I'm drink a 6er of arrogant bastard ale right now because it's good and was on sale at safeway. I don't think I'd buy HT though outside of maybe one for 8 if I'm thirsty and everyone else is slinging shitty beers on lot. Other wise I have them when my friends give some to me. Occasionally I'll toss em a few bucks for a 4 pack. I'll enjoy em, but I'm not going to seek them out.
RaarlBought beer in Canada before turning 21 for the novelty
Nice. When I was 19 I thought it was a good idea to drive all the way to Vancouver just to go to the bar. Good times. For some reason we thought it was a good idea to smuggle back a single pint bottle of pretty decent brandy that we were too young to like. Kinda funny I ended up waiting to drink the brandy until after I was 21.
CluckaChuckLove me a $12, 32 pack of HAMS
DingoSeanIt's "Hamm's" , you troglodyte!
Also, I'm a bigger fan of an 10$ 18er of Raineer 16's. Used to do those all the time back in the day in Oregon.
You both need to sing the Hamm's song.
From the Land of Sky Blue Waters,
From the land of pines, lofty balsams,
Comes the beer refreshing,
Hamm's the beer refreshing.
Brewed where nature works her wonders,
Aged for many moons, gently mellowed,
Hamm's the beer refreshing,
Hamm's the beer refreshing.
From across the rippling water,
Through the whispering pines and birches,
Comes the beer refreshing,
Hamm's the beer refreshing.
Comes a call to cool enchantment,
Comes a call to cool refreshment,
Hamm's the beer refreshing,
Hamm's the beer refreshing.
Hints of lakes and sunset breezes,
Dance and sparkle in each glassful,
Hamm's the beer refreshing,
Hamm's the beer refreshing.
Dingo- You old enough to remember those old Rainier adds with the revving motorcycle that sounded like Rain , neeeeeeeeer, beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer. When it shifted?

Haha no, I'm not old enough to have seen it on TV, but when I was in college in Oregon we had vintage movie nights in the local theatre and they'd play old advertisements from the period. I remember seeing that ad. Was a good one.
That said, I do have this poster hanging up in the garage at my dad's place. Got it for 2$ at a salvos.
skiermaneSo stoked that you can buy it all over new england this year
hell ya man its brewed at two roads facility now. Tremendous beer and its no longer insanely rare .... and now slightly cheaper than before but its still expensive
Staying the fuck away from any overhyped beers. Also drinking more wine than beer almost this summer. I like craft beers, but I'm so fucking over the shitshow of craft beer hype.
I've been trying to stay away from this thread...haha. Lurking but not posting until now apparently.

Out of curiosity, what do you consider "overhyped beer"?
Each demographic has it's own thing going on, and I totally understand the aversion to the "shitshow of craft beer hype" as you so eloquently put it. I enjoy branching out and trying new beers; be it breweries, styles of beer, hops, adjuncts; etc. The one thing that stays constant is supporting the local independent brewers that haven't sold out; from my homestate of MN to my current state of WA. Local independent breweries get my dollars and corporate sellouts get the finger.
For whatever it is or isn't worth, I'm currently sitting in the PNW drinking beer that I personally drove back from Iowa. Life couldn't taste better than it does now.

A lot of stuff. But seeing people still trying to hustle alchemist beers was kind of a yeah go fuck yourself moment. There's so much out there. I like trying new things, but sometimes I would rather just drink other stuff.
Oh look, another cool looking can with a super witty name masking some mediocre at best beer inside.
I def like checking out new breweries. I don't fuck with the big beer stores for beer that much. If I do it's just to get some decent 6ers at the half 12 pack pricing.
Seems like it's not going to slow down anytime soon.
tried to shotgun a goosehead and almost yaked so now I only sip them Vermont microbrews. Alchemist Focal Banger & my local brewery has some firreeee fruit ales. $10 tap brews kinda strays me away from going too often tho
ThaLoraxYou mean like this witty, mediocre beer from New Zealand (I may or may not have a poster of it on my wall)???

Idk, never had it. Haven't been to NZ/Aus in a few years either.
Idk I'm open to new beers, and love discovering new dank beers. I just hate that it's been more about marketing and less about beer for years. The shittiest brewery can get a distribution deal if they have a good team. Personally I don't care if somethings called [insert something witty] but whether it tastes good or not.
Maybe I'll make my cans red or call it _______ some creative ish name that loosely relates to something to show how knowledgeable I am.
Idk. I love red wine and wine has such an OG stupid hipstery following. At least that's straight forward for the most part. Beer they disguise their bullshit in some strange ultra "core" way.
I'd rather drink some beer that everyone ish has access to than deal with the bullshit hype. Always down to try a new beer, but I avoid the fuck out of beer stores the last year or two. I'll trade for or buy beer in regions I don't normally to get some fresh stuff, but I'm open as fuck to just getting a 6er of stone, or bells 2 hearted, or some other solid widely distributed beer.
ThaLoraxSierra Nevada is one of my favorite bigger breweries, but goddamn the Otra Vez makes me want to puke every time
Yeah, used to like it/not mind it, I feel like they changed something recently though, it tastes like bad lime soda now.
But I had their Southern Hemisphere Session IPA the other day and it was increddible, tasted exactly how I want a session IPA to taste.
Summer's almost over which means Grand Teton Grapefruit Gose season is almost over. Been treating it like gatorade for the last few months.
Anybody listen to Good Beer Hunting Podcast? One of my favorite podcasts, got me into beer as more than just something to shotgun while skiing, it's really smart, and looks at a lot of the aspects of the industry that are overlooked. Really interesting to anyone interested in any sort of food or beverage market, small buisnesses, or the service industry. Especially reccomend the episodes with Henhouse brewing.
theabortionatorIdk, never had it. Haven't been to NZ/Aus in a few years either.
I was being sarcastic. It is exactly what you were describing. A mediocre beer with clever marketing. But it's the cheapest drinkable beer that's not Speights or Montheith haha

I was at their brewery in 2016 immediately proceeding the 7.8 earthquake (it was the only business open) and they told me that they change it annually I think? Maybe it was that they change it based off of available ingredients? Tuatara is my favorite NZ brewery anyway. I'm not really a big fan of NZ hops though.

I actually really like monteiths. I went to their brewery in greymouth and they have some real tasty stuff.
