So I have a few questions about making changes to my ski boots to make them fit perfectly and end my pain and suffering. So currently for my carving/performance set up I ski with Lange RS 110 boots. These boots feel super snug and offer the great performance that I need but they also causing me so much pain the sometimes I have to end my skiing for the day(3 out of the 15 days)I get a cramping and bruise like pain on the bottoms of my feet and the sides of my feet (Especially on the arches is where I feel the most pain) and also feel a lot of uneven pressure in my boots. Now i've skied on these boots for about 15 days so the liner is all packed in but I still experience a lot of pain. Also I do use smart wool socks which are pretty thin but do you recommend me to find an ultra thin sock. I currently do not have an aftermarket footbed in them and I most definitely know that I need them and that could be the cause of some of my pain but i'm also worried that the boots aren't wide enough. I'm in a size of 25.5 and the last is 97mm, yesterday I measured my foots width around dinner time(after a day of standing/moving around) and they were around 99mm at the widest point. In August when my local shop opens again I'll be going to get their opinion on it but do you think I'll need to get the width of my ski boot expanded or do you think a footbed would just solve my feet from expanding that wide(my family has semi-flat feet)? Let me know what you guys think, just looking for opinions/ideas on them.
cramping at the base of your feet can be caused by a multitude of things. you're on a pretty high performance boot which will naturally take some time to break in. that being said, the pain you describe is pretty standard with any boot of that kind. I would advise you to take them to your local shop and describe to them your pain. Unless you have insanely flat feet or some other special foot thing going on, a custom footbed isn't necessary imo (although it will help). sounds to me like you need the boot blown out a bit and you should go from there
let me know if you have any more questions, skied on lange race boots for ~5 years
Running a tight boot like that would benefit from a aftermarket footbed. I say go the custom route. Drop the 150 to 200 bucks and never look back! They will outlast the boots and will be good to go for you next boot.
reiterating the custom footbed comment. that will mostly get rid of the pain in your arches. a shop can also punch out the sides of the shell, giving you a bit more width in the areas that hurt most
Do you get cramping under your feet when doing other activities sometimes too like running or sth? 'Cause if that's the case, maybe you need supportive footbeds like the podotherapeutic ones. Could be that your feet are cramping because they need more support. I need those in my daily life but with skiing i defo also need to put them in my skishoes in order not to die of cramp, and they can also help your boots to fit better, so that you can put your boots less tight which could cause the pain on your arches. Maybe thicker socks could actually help? And some boots have inner shoes you can heat up in the oven and then fit them to your foot, maybe that's also possible with yours?
