Mr.BishopI mean dude... music rights here are the obvious answer. These guys have to afford to film the movies, and if you use all A-list music there's no way you can do that.
The case of B&E is extremely unique because Iberg is a fucking hustler and does it all for the love of the game. Inspired Music gave them a lot of connections to actually get that done.
In the late 90's/early 2000's I like the soundtracks. Pennywise. Strung Out. NOFX. Sublime. Reggae. Some rap. They would sometimes throw in classic rock songs that fit, like the Almond Bros. in Harvest where Jeremy Jones and Kent Kreitler were trading lines in AK. There were some good soundtracks in MSP movies like up until around 2012, although some of the songs they used were not great. Since then it has all sucked. Poor Boyz also had good soundtracks back in the day. I used to actually find songs in ski movies, I can't remember the last time that happened.
Are the budgets so much lower now that they can't find music? They used to be able to find good stuff. As far as big names, I think of Hoji killing it in Seven Sunny Days to WMA by Pearl Jam. I think of Richard Permin in Superheroes of Stoke destroying stuff to Jane's Addiction Coming Down the Mountain. In In Deep Sean Petit skied to Teenage Wasteland, which could not have been cheap. Have budgets gone down that much now? I guess it is personal preference. I'm older, and I long for punk/grunge/real rap and classic rock, the stuff from the late 90's/early 2000's or before. Music now sucks, at least the music I have been exposed to. It is either dreary/whiny indy garbage or poppy junk. Maybe there is good music out there and I'm just not finding it, but I doubt it. Nirvana had some great music that was very popular. The popular music now sucks i comparison.
Are budgets that much lower now? I have to agree with the OP's sentiment. Now I watch ski movies with the sound turned off, I never used to do that. When I watch an old movie like The Realm I turn it back on. The same thing has happened with surf videos. Taylor Steele used to have cutting edge punk in his stuff, music in surf videos tends to suck now. Like I said, I used to find songs in surf/ski videos. I can't remember the last time that happened and unless budgets have been slashed I don't think that's the reason.
