What car to get with $5,000

I have a budget of about $5000 to spend on a new car. What should I get? So far I like the golf tdi, and mazda 3 hatchback.

This. Buying a shit old car will probably cost you more in the long run with expensive insurance and replacing parts, etc,etc. A newerish car will cost you more up front but you'll save money on fuel and shit. Plus bitches love newer cars

What year are the two cars youre looking at? The VW will probably be expensive and depending on the year the Mazda will rust quickly.

Maybe look at ep3 civic Si's, Subaru Imprezas, and maybe something like a 4runner/tacoma

I want a tdi mk4 or newer. Mazda 2004 or newer.
I currently drive a truck, so anything small with a turbo and a 5 speed is what I'm looking for.

definitely a golf tdi. hypothetically if you had it for 10 years and drove 10-15k miles a year you'd already save the entire cost of the 5k car in fuel savings. Also it's really damned nice to go 600+ miles on a tank. And provided you maintenance it properly (regular oil changes, etc) those diesel engines can go for pretty much ever. 350k miles is not a problem. Also I find the low end torque on diesels particularly nice in snow and slippery conditions.

also I've been looking at imprezas. I have a friend who is selling his 02 impreza for $2000. I kinda want to buy it, but it has high miles, (195K) and subarus turn to shit with a lot of miles. maybe it would be worth it if I put leftover money towards an engine rebuild, but i don't really wanna do that.

disclaimer. I just picked up a 2002 tdi golf. $1200. 160k miles. Just had to put in a couple hundred on bushings and tie rod ends, fluid changes, etc and it's been fantastic. oh, that's $1200 Canadian too. So long as I keep up the minor maintenance it should easily do another 150k miles with no major repairs. My parents have a 2003 with about 320k on it and still going very strong with no major issues. I sound like a salesman. I guess I've just been very pleased with VW.

TDI isnt a bad option for mpg's but they make 100hp, theyre not hatches but a mazda speed protege is a cool and rare option, 170hp/160 torque. Id say maybe an older audi a4 but thatll be a nightmare if its that cheap. Maybe just go for a GTI instead of a tdi if you want a fun turbo car for cheap.

This. Find a vehicle in the 10-15k range that someone is trying to sell quickly (craigslist, local papers, NOT a dealership). Put 5 down and finance the rest. Your payment will be small and the vehicle may actually be worth something in a couple years. Plus your building credit.

You can likely find something for 15k that still has warranty coverage.

what he said ^ the alh engine is quite amazing, anything the newer model tdi's actually get worse gas mileage though

Any early 2000's subaru.. Or any 90's honda or newer. Couple months ago I bought a 2002 outback with 150k miles for 5500. I've already put in $500 for tie rods, basic maintenance, and a new radiator; however I expect it to last for another 100k miles. Also, it's easy to find cheap part for these japanese cars, and there are a lot of resources online if you're a bit mechanical. However, if you get a subaru with the 2.5 L engine, make sure the head gaskets are done!

Are you paying for insurance? If you are, factor in the fact that most insurance companies are going to have higher rates for your age bracket when driving a sports car.

That being said, if you have a steady job, low costs of living, use that $5000 as a down payment on a lower-mileage vehicle and make payments.

I'm not paying for insurance, but I only bring home about $80 a week with my part time job so I don't think I would be able to afford car payments.

Go find yourself the lowest mileage Civic you can find and basically forget about your car until you can afford something better.

I second this. I got a 2000 Subaru Outback for my first car for $1600 with 180,000 KMS and nothing was wrong with it. Just some typical Subaru rust.

Annnd just recently i bought a 2002 Impreza Hatch with 190,000KMs with an immaculate body for $1800. I could easily sell it here in Alberta for $4000+.

Toyota echo hatchback.
You probably won't have to spend your whole budget to get one in good shape. They're very reliable and dirt cheap to fix and fuel. They're so ubiquitous that there are mountains of surplus and lightly used parts around. They have good handling for such a cheap car, and at least with a manual transmission they're good in snow. I've fit four people and all our gear for a three day backcountry trip in the hatchback, and although not ideal for sleeping in, it's possible to get a decent restin the echo.

If you can find one get an old subie. They're super reliable and they last for fucking ever. An old Impreza or a Forester shouldn't cost that much money if you look at like 2003 ish with 100k miles or so.

This, pretty much any modern-ish Honda will be super reliable and easy on insurance. I use to drive a 2000 Accord in high school and it was pretty much bulletproof, never had any problems, gets great mileage, only cost like $3500 in pretty good condition with like 100k on the clock, and once I can buy it from my parents I intend to drive it to at least 250k hopefully.

I wouldn't take out a loan. Is this your first car? If yes, buy something for less than 5K and learn to fix it yourself when shit breaks. I would much rather spend my money on tools than labor and marked up parts.

Damn dude that's a ridiculous deal. Both gasoline VWs I owned didnt make it much past 200k miles. I sold my Jetta to some poor fuck on craigslist who didnt know shit about cars but liked the wheels and tint. My Passat blew a head gasket and I didnt think it was worth it to fix such an old car. The tdi has a way longer lifespan but they are way more expensive than the gas options, good find.

For that price, you should be able to find a decent Xterra. More room for your stuff and passengers, better off road capabilities, and better in deep snow than any subaru.
