Skiers you've lost RESPECT for

All of us have skiers which we idolise and aspire to be.

But lets talk about the opposite.

For me the main skier is Gus Kenworthy.

One hand he is an amazing skier and has had the courage of coming out. That must be something very difficult to do, especially after he said he struggled with it during his childhood, with a very masculine sided view in skiing.

However, to me he also seems to be using it as a CONSTANT marketing point. It this regard I have lost a little respect. He no doubt still slays, but still.

I mean in the end, he is trying to make a living. And I so suppose it would help him. But similar to Shaun White, is he really doing what he does for the sport? Or trying really to capitalise off the moment? Or are his sponsors expecting him to and that he doesn't have a choice?

So whilst I do feel he should be applauded for coming out to the public, I feel that sometimes it can be too excessive. Perhaps I don't understand or know the full story. Just my 2 cents

So NS, are there any skiers who you have lost respect for? Thoughts?

SteveSteppThat being said, I think gus is one of the best skiers on the planet, if the THE best.... he probably doesnt need to highlight his personal life..... but hey, its helping him make more money in a career that ends abruptly for almost all professional skiers. good for him


By promoting his personal life and sexuality, Gus gives LGBTQ skiers an athlete to look up to.

The extreme sports industry is has a notorious history for being homophobic. I'm sure many gay athletes felt they had no place in a world where their skills were viewed as an extension of their manliness. Ten years ago, sponsors may have not wanted to support an openly gay athlete. Gus is playing an important part in changing that.

As a straight skier, its easy not to care about Gus' coming out and get annoyed by his persistent gay pride posts. However, his posts aren't for straight guys like you and me, its for the guy who feels like he's trapped in his own skin.

And by photoshopping himself higher in photos, he gives the LGBTQ community an even higher goal to strive for. Gus really is the best person that has ever put on skis.

I think it was a publicity stunt. It gave him the perfect opportunity for the long heartfelt apology that he gave. Hearts melted. His stock rose. Publicist gets paid.

I'd be very surprised if that was the case.

That whole thing made him look like a fool and really undermined his brand.

Ive lost a lot of respect for ahmet dadali because he'd constantly complain about competitions but he entered real ski, not saying i dont support real ski i just think its hypocritical

Seriously? He hates on competition FORMATS that don't allow/don't reward creativity, uniqueness, progression, innovation. You know, freeskiing...
Real ski is exactly the type of comp he SHOULD enter. I think it would be hypocritical if he didn't.

wrong... the answer is style. that's the correct answer.

competition formats reward creativity, uniqueness, progression, innovation. fuck man if someone did a quad I'm guessing they might win it? Because it's never been done before? Innovation is and should be rewarded in the competition scene. lots of ppl think style should outweigh that but it never will.

Hmmm, Vincets cork 3 pretzel 1 wasn't progressive? His dub bio genie was progressive? Nose butter triple wasn't progressive? Jossi wells gold run wasn't creative and progressive? He didn't even have a triple and won gold. Bellemares gold at Pyeongchang wasn't stylish? Again, didn't have a triple. Seriously no comp skier hates on film skiers doing the exact same cork 7 blunt (seriously every fucking video had them) but for some reason every film skier hates on comp skiing.

I think him coming out was awesome. The freeskiing community can be kinda homophobic sometimes, like with "that was gay" or whatever. I think we needed a gay pro. But when I read about that photoshopping his insta thing, that pissed me off. That is the most selfish, dishonest, and outright fucking dicky thing he could do. He is a very talented skier. He does not need to do that. Lying to your fans is horrible for them and you. They lost trust for him, and he lost fans. And to do that in the freeskiing? You might as well use autotune. So I have lost all respect for him.
