Insurance: I'm not american so I don't know about this jewfag shit-scam.

I'd also say become friends with a lot of the F&B people to get the hookup on food. ALL of my old roommates who worked in F&B brought home extra food from the day as long as you have a problem with re-heating stuff.. also get in good with bartenders.. not saying you'll always get drinks on the house (because you won't) but occasionally which is nice.

Also.. if you're not wanting to get a car or save gas. Ride free public transportation. In Steamboat/Park City/Summit County I always garaged my car for the winter and rode the bus. You could definitely get by without a vehicle though if you don't have a problem waiting in buses and they have that option where you go.

I've learned most any "mountain operations" job is really fun and you get LOTS of freedom while working with some of the best people you'll meet, most easy going bosses. Not saying you and your co-workers do a shit job.. you just get a lot more freedoms, do more fun things like drive snowcats and snowmobiles, ride-breaks, behind the scenes shit that you'll never forget like those sunrises. DO NOT get "mountain ops" confused with "lift ops". Way too many rules, short ride breaks if any, and usually douchey supervisors. That's just my option.

Yeah, speaking from experience I'd say mtn ops is def. the best way to go, for all those reasons (SUNRISES and SUNSETS!)

....except road crew or carpark crew, don't do that.

Yeah no problem. I can say these are soley based on my experience doing this jobs.. I'm sure others will chime in if they think of something..

Snowmaking
Pros:
-get to drive snowmobiles.
-get to see how resort get ready for the season.
-YOU are they reason why resorts open.
-sunrises and sunsets are killer, not to mention if you have a minute to look you --can see the constellations and planets.
-usually a chill crew
-long breaks when you're maxed out and have good temps
-usually you can pick your shift preference
-good pay & always advancement opportunity
-shovel races down the ice/snow whales (big ass snow pile)

-Cons:
long hours
-freezing cold and wet (but they give you great outwear so your fine)
-manual labor (breaking ice off the guns/towers, digging out buried shit)
-if you're grave shift.. you sleep all day
-guns are LOUD without earplugs
-did I mention lots of manual labor?

Grooming
Pros:
-you get to drive a snowcat (personally prefer snowcats with sticks over stirring wheel, but as far as i know thats only a PistenBully thing)
-you get to drive a snowcat....
-some cats have XM radio
-comfy seats
-pays great w/ lots of opportunity for advancement
-work by yourself & listen to music
-sunrise/sunsets/planets and shit
-nothing like being on top of the mountain in your cat at 2am and just looking down at the city

Cons:
-alone for long periods of time
-running over fences, poles, random shit with your tiller
-when lifties don't bring in their line corrals at night
-often monotonous work
-can only work at night (exception to vail as far as I know they still do day grooming?)

Parks
Pros:
-learn a lot about carpentry and welding
-most all departments like you
-chilling with people in the park
-if you're not doing a special project or maintaining features.. you're just skiing park and having a good time(we could at all the places I've been)
-grilling out... A LOT
-you pretty much can use any equipment you need to get the job done
-you learn a lot about building quality features.
-amazing co-workers
-lots of free crap during events

Cons:
-you can get lazy and your park suffers.. don't get lazy
-yelling at stupid parents/kids for standing on lips and jumps
-kids sitting at the bench feature in the park having lunch
-when you get a snowstorm and digging everything out

There are plenty of other jobs, but those are a few that I've worked and can say some things about. Hope that helps a little

TBH I have no Idea, I would love to work at a ski shop because I love fixing skis... Thats the only job I could see myself doing, that or just do some random job at night so I can ski all day... I would not be a Ski Bum my entire life, but I'd like to do it as long as I can. I just don't know what I should study so I can get a job to make enough money to ski

Other: Invest in 1 really fucking good set up that you feel good with. Then you can buy disposable stuff and resell when leaving a location at very little cost.

This is year 9 of ski bumming.

Year one was like this:

Job: Hotel front desk (mountain job)
Location: Mammoth Lakes
Car: Subaru Impreza
House: lived with 5 Norwegians
Insurance: none
Tools: my vagina
Other: don't drink and drive.

The funny part about this is that I really don't make THAT much more now than I did 9 years ago. Mostly because I was working 40 hours a week back then and now I work around 20 hours a week but only get to keep about 45 cents for every dollar I make, vs back then it was closer to 90 cents for every dollar. I'm MUCH happier now though.

I have been....

Outside Sales (mountain), Ski Instructor (mountain), Ski shop (private), Hotel front desk (mountain), Hotel front desk supervisor (private), Snow Reporter/marketing coordinator (mountain), Jaeger girl (private), web developer (what I do now).

All of them had their perks...
Ski instructing was probably my least favorite. I even had advanced kids usually and I still got skier envy.
Snow reporter was great because I would start at 5am and basically had to work 8 hours between 5am and 5pm. There were plenty of times that those 8 hours included skiing for several hours taking photos and going out with different groups and what not. But... it is a pain to wake up at 4:30 am when your friends are staying out till 2 am.
Working at a hotel front desk is great because it's pretty easy work, sometimes you get tips and they are usually very good with scheduling so some weeks you'll have 3 7- 3 shifts and some weeks you'll have 2 7 -3 shifts and the rest are 3 -11. Just don't expect the pay to be high.
Then there is the ski shop. I'm pretty certain I was spoiled with mine. The pay was $2 an hour more than what the mountain offered and came with health insurance. First season was 25% off, pro forms, and access to a shop pass which for me was available every single time I went for it. Second season was 50% off (or cost if it cost more than the 50% discount) half the season pass paid for. Third was 50% off and free season pass. Every year came with a dollar raise. People in that shop pretty much don't quit.
What I do now is of course my favorite.
I will say that most of my friends are in the food service industry. I wouldn't have patience for this. Just not my thing.
My friends that drive snowcats seem to complain about their work less than anyone else.

So basicaly you love working in the ski shop? Did you have to got to any school for that or you just applied and they hired you?

Well what I am planning on doing (and advise to you) is after high-school attend college for a normal four year bachelors degree. It doesn't have to be a fancy college, but it is hard to go back to school after taking a few years off. Get a degree in something you enjoy and maybe plan to use in future such as a marketing (could create a job marketing for a ski or outdoor company). I advise you to go to college because you may only be a ski bum for a few years and want to start a career but still want to be emersed in the ski world. You can have a sweet job doing what you love and actually sleep on a matress under your own roof. Hate it or love it- just my ideas I was hoping to share great thread BTW.

haha I know guys who tried roughing it in there car all winter.. didn't last long. You should have no problem finding a cheap place anywhere you go. The prime to to look is now through Oct.

Haha I had a college degree, but I'm pretty sure that a degree is not a prerequisite for a ski shop job. However, a lot of the people I worked with had them. I think it was just the nature of the store though. One of the top shops in the country, everyone was super educated about the products. The owners treated their employees with so much respect. I've worked in other shops, and this was a totally different environment.

If you really want to do it on the cheap get an overnight job and a car you can sleep in. You'll eventually get hassled sleeping in your vehicle at night, but during the day no one gives a shit and it's warmer.

Colorado Mountain College do a degree in skiing buisness and tourism that includes shop management, cat and grooming operations and a bunch of other mountain ops qualificaitons

If you live in your car, it's obviously going to be freezing a lot so what do you do to stay warm other than have blankets and clothes...
