Confidence is just something that comes with time and practice. Start small and work your way up. I spent most of my time learning park basics outside the park. I would practice popping and tucking my legs up in the air off of wind lips, moguls, cat tracks and other side hits. Once you feel comfortable doing that it makes it way easier to hit the small jumps in the park.
Riding with people that are better than you definitely helps, but you can also learn a lot from online tutorials. There are tons of great videos out there to help you get started in the park, I'm partial to the ski addiction videos. If you can't get a lot of on mountain time you can help your skiing by picking up a similar sport like skateboarding or rollerblading or bmx and mountain biking.
