People so butt-hurt over the confederate flag flown @ SC capitol ???

Like why? I could see if a northern state was flying it...

It's a symbol of southern HERITAGE, not hate. Maybe to some retarded white trash fuckers. But it is flying high at the SC capital building, not because of racism, but to remember those that laid down their lives to stand for what they believed, for states rights. NOT only because of slavery.

There were tons of FREE slaves that fought for the south during the civil war, with many African Americans in the Sons of the Confederacy. Look it up if you want.


You're all fucking stupid if you think the flag is a symbol of racism just because the KKK uses it, obviously it's fucking dumb for anyone in the north to fly it. That's a no-brainer.

People are gonna do what they wanna do though and it's probably a good idea to know where they are coming from instead of accusing them of being racists. 99% of these people are not trying to offend anyone, they're just supporting their beliefs.


The issue with your statement is that you don't realize, that other people don't realize, because of ignorance what the flag actually stands for. Its not heritage and if you ever tried talking to an educated person about this they will literally laugh in your face and view you very negatively. So if you do want to fly the Confederate flag you should keep it behind closed doors.

Getting rid of the confederate flag is not going to do anything to solve racism. If anything, it will basically serve as a martyr and strengthen the cause of people who are behind it. The swastika was basically abolished after WW2 even though it was a sign of peace, but that doesn't stop neonazis from existing.

Last time I was in Louisiana, I literally pissed on my great great something's grave. He died fighting for the south.

Wait, so you're saying people are ignorant for having an opinion and their own interpretation of a flag?

The flag isn't necessarily a staple for slavery. 99% of people who fly it aren't doing so because they are racist or believe in slavery, at least from what I've seen. Maybe that's different in other parts but that's what it's like here. Then again NY is probably a bad example.

Anyways, it doesn't affect me so my opinion doesn't matter. I don't think flying it is usually a good idea but if someone feels strongly about their interpretation of the flag and they want to express that, then so be it. There's really nothing to be done to change their mind. Just gotta go with the flow and respect their beliefs without being judgmental.

That being said, anyone who still stands for slavery and uses the flag to show that is fucked and I disagree with that 100%.

You're right, the war was over states' rights. It was over the Southern states wanting the right to be able to own black people and force them to work on their plantations. So if you fly a confederate flag, you're showing that you support states' rights over federal power, IN THE CONTEXT of those states wanting to exercise their rights to be able to own human beings as property because of their race. States' rights as a general debate is not directly related to race, but in the specific instance of the stars and bars/the civil war it most certainly is. You can say what you will, but it will remain the symbol that represents the "rich history and tradition of the south that all those brave confederate soldiers died fighting for" AKA wanting to be able to whip black people while they picked cotton for free. Case closed, you're a racist asshole frenchy.

Fly a confederate flag if you want to for whatever reason. If you believe in the "heritage not hate" standpoint, then that's your belief. Just don't be surprised if someone who disagrees takes offense to it.

There were a lot of these kids in my high school(upstate NY). I was friends with them and not one of them was legitimately racist. Slavery is terrible but there was much more that the south stood for. Those values are what people believe the confederate flag stand for, not slavery.

Hell, we had a couple african americans in my school who flew confederate flags from their trucks... To be honest people don't fly the flag because they support slavery/racism and if you think otherwise you are equally as ignorant.

yeah yeah I get what you mean. Just from what I've seen those who fly it aren't doing it because it represents what you mentioned. Everyone is gonna have their own interpretation of it. Most people aren't going to be intentionally racist like that and if they thought that was how it was looked at I don't think any of them would fly it. The same person who flys a confederate flag would probably argue that a gay pride flag is offensive to them and their religion. It works both ways and tbh it's stupid. Let people believe in what they want, theres really nothing anyone can do to stop them from expressing their views.

Even if you remove all of the racist/pro-slavery elements from the equation, the Confederate flag represents a traitorous segment that waged war against it's own country. For that reason alone it should not be flown by any contemporary government agency, either state or federal. It for sure was an important part of American history, and it should not be forgotten. It should be kept and studied like all historical artifacts- in a museum.

On a personal note, private citizens should be allowed to freely express themselves how they see fit, even if I disagree with their racist/pro-slavery undertones. The (peaceful) freedom of expression is something that we should not limit, no matter what our own personal opinions are. So if a private citizen wants to fly the flag in their truck or home or wear it to the Red Lobster on a Friday night, they should have all of the right to do so.

If seeing a confederate flag actually bothers someone they are probably seeking out things to complain about. And if it truly does bother someone they need to get some thicker fucking skin. There are a hell of a lot worse things theyre gonna see/encounter over their lifetime

That is false. Actually the purpose of the civil war was to preserve the Union because the Confederate states wanted to split off from the north and become their own country. Lincoln didn't want that to happen. Ending slavery was not the priority.

Well Lincoln wanted to keep the Union together, but the south was afraid they would take their slaves away. So they went to war. Any actual historian who doesn't have any agenda to try down play Americas fuck ups will tell you the war was mainly over slavery. Or within your history books at school that try do the exact same thing. The war was over slavery.

I'm surprised no one brought this up yet, but they didn't start flying the confederate battle flag at the SC capitol until 1962. They did this to show opposition to the civil rights movement. So there's your symbol.

Also, I don't think it would be a big deal if they flew the political flag of the Confederacy (mainly because no one knows what it looks like), but what's on display is the battle flag.

Why did the south want to break away? It's because the north wanted to ban slavery which would decimate the southern economy. The south thought states should have the right to choose if slavery was legal or not... That dispute was the main cause of the civil war.

So by your rationale, the swastika isn't a symbol of white supremacy and Nazism since it has been widely used in many cultures, and was originally just a flag for the German army. So you should be able to wave it around proudly. Right?

The problem isn't with the flag (or symbol's) origins, it's with what the flag has come to represent.

so you're saying that those asshole kids in my northern New Hampshire high school who have confederate flags on their trucks and belt buckles do so because its some sort of "belief"? As someone who deals with racism on a relatively regular basis due to my job profession, even if it doesn't offend YOU, maybe its time to realize that the state capitol is not a place to say "This flag which represents a time and an ideology in which African Americans were not only mistreated but slaves, is okay to fly in the place that is meant to represent all people, is fine"

Fly it in your house, on your car, I don't give a shit, you can be stuck in old ways as much as you like. But when it comes to public buildings such as the capitol? Yeah thats a place the flag can fuck right off from.

But you cant speak for everyone. A holocaust surviver that would see that may think differently. Same goes for black people. A black person with a history of slavery in their family living in SC might not like the fact that their state represents itself partially under that banner.

Fact is its not right for SC to fly that, and my main issue is it represents a failed rebellion/succession is a positive light. Its like flying the British flag at our capital.

Writing off an issue like this because you like fishing more than politics (which I don't blame you for whatsoever), makes you a bigot. For the sake of the debate, for the sake of those arguing, and frankly for the sake of the country, just take a minute to truly think about the argument and form at least an informed opinion. Writing off an issue like this because you like fishing more than politics (which I don't blame you for whatsoever), makes you a bigot. For the sake of the debate, for the sake of those arguing, and frankly for the sake of the country, just take a minute to truly think about the argument and form at least an informed opinion. I wouldnt say im a bigot, i just dont let something like an insignificant piece of fabric get under my skin. That flag only has as much power as the people outraged by it give it
