safarisamDolan isn't funny. He never was, and and never will be
Mr.BishopIts a definite change of who logs in. Many of the new viewers to NS are passive, which I do agree creates a shift in the way community is perceived. We're by no means giving up on the forums, as I absolutely love the experience. The tricky part is finding that balance. The "entertaining" element you speak of so quickly devolves into stupidity is the main issue. We tried letting NSG rip with whatever people wanted for a few years just like you suggested - but that triggered a small group of people who weren't funny in the slightest bit destroying the experience for many others.
In fact, the glory days you speak of had heavy-handed moderation. It was only when we truly opened it up and removed almost all moderation that we started to see a decline in conversation.
The way back to forum activity is to work as a community to stimulate good conversation, and threads that are actually funny vs. extremely stupid trolls. I'm confident that things will level out, and then start to improve in the forums now that we have implemented more strict moderation. The "glory days" were built on those principles and letting our equivalent of "fatpeoplehate" run rampant is not the solution to success. I consider my decision to remove almost all moderation one of the biggest mistakes I've made in my time at the helm of this site.
Mobile is the other factor here. You simply aren't as engaged in huge discussions when hammering on a touch screen, and its rise has made it that passive viewing is by far the most used form of interaction. Forums not only are extremely interactive, but require a huge amount of typing and as our traffic begins to cross 50% mobile - and accelerating all the time - forums in their current format aren't ever going to go back to what they were.
Remember, even 5 years ago basically the only way to access the internet was by whipping out your laptop and slaying that keyboard.

IncognitoXLI think the main problem is that if free speech isnt a drug to you, then youre probably not a very interesting person.
So if you kill off free speech you wont be left with a very interesting place.
if your not selling free speech, the ubermensches of the internet will go elsewhere to get their fix. People dont necessarily crave drama, but if its interesting, the hoards of ppl will follow the interestingness wherever it goes.

Mr.BishopIts not about killing free speech, its about killing off harassment. There's a difference.
I mean if you're at a bar, is it tolerated for some dude to run around to all the black people in full KKK garb yelling "FUCK ni**ers"?
No. Its not.
Its your right to not be arrested for this kind of shitty behavior, and to not be killed for it. However, if you're fucking up everyone having a good time at the bar then piss off. Bouncers will show you the door nicely, and aggressively if you resist.
To the other point of social media surpassing NS - for one part yes there is many new flashy things to play with so your time gets much more split than the days when we were the only cat on the block.
however as well, almost all other forms of social media are a tailored experience. If you dislike someone's post, you unfollow and never hear from them again. I'm quite confident that our desire to leave open the complete shitshow made these other forms more appealing. Even if your'e the biggest shit disturber in the universe, you completely tailor your friend circles to your own opinions, and anyone who hates you can just unfriend/block/unfollow/whatever. You never know you're blocked and they never hear from you again.
Humans don't like to listen to assholes when they're having a good time. I do not disagree that the small portion of people who were here to just cause shit will hate the new world we're building. However skiers interested in taking part in skiing discussion and posting/consuming media will love it.
