SKI.INGThere's just nothing stimulating or cool anymore for me. I had to give up skiing, and then the other forum subjects are mostly dead or a bashfest amongst supposed experts in everything. I still get on a lot just to check but I don't stay too long.

KravtZBeen on NS now for 8 years almost every single day...definitely slowing down a bit compared to what it used to be. Perhaps we have peaked in terms of the number of freeskiers who frequent forums of this sort.
brett_fisherA dumb thread I made is on the front it takes 2 up votes to get to the front. :(

Granite_StateBeen a contributing member for 6, discovered the site for videos 8 years ago. Like you, since I discovered the forum and actually made an account Ive been on nearly every single day. I wouldn't say its slowed, more like the immature crowd has drove of the mature crowd. Whats sad is the mature crowd always had the best threads/posts and made NS more enjoyable. Nowadays we have these retard, idiot kids who make 1,000 aliases and whose idea of trolling is making threads titled "I smoke weedz, or Boobies" and such, with no effort, content, humor, or substance. I feel like the older members just don't give a fuck about NS anymore because of it.
Also I do think the excessive moderation plays a part. Honestly when I joined you could get away with far more than you can now. I get it, NS is trying to grow as a business and a brand and that means attracting younger members but in the process they have alienated the ones that have been around since its inception, installing all these new rules that didn't exist 5,6,7,8 years ago. The OG members made this site what it is, these younger ones are ruinging it.
At the end of the day NS has played a huge part in my life. I've made friends here I would never have met in the real world. I get a lot of "wordly information" from this site. But it has changed and in a lot of instances for the better, but IMO the forum is the heart and soul, and in that regard its only been a downward slope.
Oh well, Im half drunk anyways and am sure I make no sense but thats just how I feel at this point in time.

theabortionatormonth?
cool_nameTbh I can't remember exactly when, I think around a year ago though. When the mods would ban you for even being slightly mean to somebody, now everyone is just nice to each other and it is boring. What we need to do is bring back op's mom jokes

theabortionatorIdk, I remember in 05 hating on everything a bit and thought it was setup shitty and didn't make an account. Now I feel like it's one of the more well set up boards honestly.
I guess it's just personal preference.
And NS def is a dick measuring contest. But I hear what yur sayin. I wish the fucking cults would come back.
MCsugarcatPeeps ran out of shit to say not much more to it its summer.
McLSnah I disagree. First, this season was shit in terms of snow which may have impacted the number of people here, plus we're right before actual summer so it's normal we have far less people on and no good summer threads yet.
But tbh, NS has never been so good, it's just this fucking generation of whiny nostalgic (without even having been there from the start) dickheads that partially ruins NS. Content is dope af, more news than ever, more videos, more pics, more sub forums, more collabs, new programs, I'm in love with NS, you just gotta take what's good and leave the negativity behind.
dane_wizwillardamen, so many people lurk this site as well. I lurked this site for years before I joined, because I didn't have a reason to part take in the forum aspect of things. Half the time im on this site now i'm not even logged on.
It's also summer
it's also a forum site like honestly what's the point of even posting on here anyways? It's fun but i'll give u +k if you give me a legit reason you're here.
Mr.BishopThis is a prime reason why we built the alerts system, to create the building blocks of what will allow us to push out notifications for what is happening that you care about vs. simply checking everything every day.
Mr.BishopThere's a couple of things at play here.
First off, forums everywhere on the internet are suffering massively as the new generation simply on boards with twitter, snapchat, instagram, facebook - whatever new platform is the flavor of the week. They are able to completely tune their experience, and ignore anyone they don't like. The setup of a forum is simply less appealing to the new generations. They don't want to deal with your trolling bullshit, so they take one look at this cliquey exclusive club and go back to snapchatting their buddies. Its across the board that this is happening, forums are not the #1 form of social discussion anymore.
Second - The fucksticks drove the new people away. As point #1 took hold, the amount of 'freedom' you were given in NSG let a tiny fraction of guys make absolutely every new member hate the experience. Many people feel that the over-abundance of moderation 'killed' the place, but I assure you this is just the beginning of re-growth. As some of you have stated, the actual funny people who had intelligent and thoughtful conversation that 'made this place tolerable' were driven out by the ones who just wanted to ruin everyone else's day. The way back to this type of a member is through being stricter - not looser. We need to foster a certain level of discussion - and even a certain quality of trolling - if we are to see a return of people who are interesting.
Third - The part of Newschoolers that is flourishing is the content. We have created a completely open content system, where anyone has a chance to get started. They earn points upon their first upload, and if they get enough they are invited to new opportunities, the ability to make money, the ability to earn paying jobs with the company and experience in an industry that will take what you've learned on here and hire you full-time in media. We have put an enormous amount of effort in transitioning Newschoolers from being a conversation-based community to a content-based one. This above an beyond else is where to look at growth on the site. The results out of this system have been utterly mind-blowing and its only going up from here.
Fourth - The mobile phone has really harmed the forum experience. Forums are designed at their core to be a long-format discussion engine, and sitting there hammering on your phone does not lead to this being a super pleasurable experience. Simply the act of typing on a touchscreen greatly reduces the users' desire to engage in thoughtful conversation above a few quips or upvotes.
That being said - I do know we need to do a lot to increase the pleasure of using the mobile experience. We're in the process of enacting an absolutely massive change which is going to totally revolutionize the mobile experience of Newschoolers over the next few months - and then allow for major overhauls within the next year.
Lastly, the experience of mobile has led a lot of people to only check things when notified on their device. Gone are the days where users endlessly cycled through specific sections to check what is new. This is a prime reason why we built the alerts system, to create the building blocks of what will allow us to push out notifications for what is happening that you care about vs. simply checking everything every day.
So no - Newschoolers is by no means dying. It is going through a major re-birth, which started many years ago and is a natural cycle of the internet as technologies and user habits change.
Remember for a lot of people talking about the 'glory days' - the iPhone was only invented in 2007. Facebook only got popular in 2010 or so, and there was no instagram, no snapchat, no twitter, etc for many years afterwards. NS was the only game on the block if you wanted to talk to skiers, so obviously it was insanely active then.
This place will be different when all the dust settles from this, but there is no doubt in my mind that its going to be even more awesome than it ever was.

Spagett+I can't even read one of those paragraphs let alone all of them.
dgravesmeh I have gone from a post whore to maybe posting once every couple weeks. Hell, the only thread I really check is post whats on your mind. I don't know if it's because i'm just super busy, other interests, shittier members, or the fact that the newschoolers facebook is whoring itself out. I still check ns everyday, but its just getting less interesting. I'd rather go to the SLAP forums where its actually interesting...
