Soccer and American Football

So today I was back in my hometown for a rivalry soccer game for the girls team. Ended up in a rough loss in overtime.

What I don't understand is the whole football team there talking shit about soccer and not exactly being supportive "I'm not allowed to say soccer in my house cuz it's gay"

As a little bit info are soccer program is the one of the most successful programs whereas football is the least

So what I'm asking is what's with this mentality? Honestly, I've played soccer my whole life, and don't have anything against football, except for in situations like this, and in my experience it's been primarily football. None of the other sports talk shit they just do what they do. Why is there this soccer vs. football mentality. I know soccer is called a grass fairy sport and what not, even though I know that most of those football players would get their asses handed to them by the soccer team in both sports. I understand that some soccer players are assholes but why this mentality? Why can't you get over yourself and just support your school and team rather than talking shit, and this is a pattern and ongoing battle, when it really doesn't need to be. I play on a premiership team, soccer a one of my big things, but I much more enjoy watching pro football vs some pro soccer and I'll admit that, but any football person I've ever met will talk as much shit as possible about the sport. I'm not saying one is harder than the other the each have their difficulties.


Kinda a rant.

What are your opinions.

Shit I player soccer most of my life and am 100% confident I could outperform more than half the kids on my hs football team.

I always viewed football as the sport you play when you suck at everything else

that all just boils down to where you live and what teams are competitive or not.

e.g. rugby's a super tough sport but since it was a new program at my school it was the sport that all the non athletic kids would play when they didn't make other teams, so it featured the same crew as you'd imagine at a real life quidditch match

californiagrownI guess I wasn't clear enough. In american sports athletes don't aknowledge pain. They do this as a display of toughness. Even when flopping( lebron doesnt do it much, hes just a popular guy to hate on) players dont act hurt. In soccer you overact the amount of pain you are in as part of trying to get the foul call. This is seen as the players being pussies.


Fair enough. That being said I'm in no way defending diving in soccer. I hate it and many times have stood over a guy I fouled that wouldn't get up and called him a pussy to his face. I've never dove myself.

But soccer's system lends itself to embellishing more than other sports. In basketball there won't be a more harsh penalty if a player fakes being hurt. I can't remember the rules specifically but it's clear what makes something a flagrant foul, like a push from behind while a player is in the air. Basketball also has replay so there's no point pretending something was worse than it was. Soccer is just a snapshot the ref gets of the foul and doesn't get replay. Not to mention it could be difficult for him to tell if the player tackled with his studs up or not... something that could warrant a card. So a player staying on the ground pretending to have taken studs to the back of the leg could convince the ref the tackle was studs up and warrant the card. With no replay he has no way of knowing. IMO adding replay to soccer would solve a lot of embellishment problems.

Discussing diving in football is pointless for obvious reasons. Though I have seen NFL games with scuffles after the play where guys get shoved and flop and pretend to be hurt.

This is the funniest shit I have read on NS in a long time. Have you ever even put pads on? Have you ever tried to make an open field tackle? Until you play the sport you can not say that...

Really? You think a bunch oh 150 pound soccer players could make up a decent offensive line? Or could take hits from 220b linebackers? Or throw a 30 yard pass accurately?

It's shit like this that makes the kids in the two sports dislike each other. Cause they always take digs on the other sport even though they are not really comparable. Soccer plays probably can run circles around just about every football player, but I bet a lot of football players are a lot stronger than soccer players. Both sports take a lot of skill but they are just different.

Well what I'm talking about are the player's on my team who are six foot, over 200 and bench nearly three. But I understand what your saying. Its really just relevant to your location and team. And I do agree that football takes a stronger player, in a different way.

A. WR, QB, SS, maybe CB but I might not be big enough. Im fast, moderately tall, more of a lean build.

B. I mean it is NH football so its not very good but they were state champs twice when I was in HS and they've won it the last two years in a row.

I've put pads on. Ive dicked around in pads and hit people. Half my friends were on the team. Never played an actual game but plenty of backyard tackle. Any I know what youre gonna say "hurr da durr durr playing tackle with your friends isn't the same thing as playing in a game" yeah I get it. But I get the gist of it. Listen I may of come across as sort of a dick, my bad. I'm not saying football doesn't take skill, I just think soccer players would have an easier time being competitive at football than football players at soccer. Shit I also think half of being decent at football is size. More than half a football team HAS to be big. D-linemen, O-linemen, linebackers, fullbacks, tight ends. How many centers are under 6 feet? 6'2"? How many weigh less than 220? 230? Thats just my opinion. Shit half my roommates played in Mass and all their teams went to the superbowl multiple times, some won some lost. One of them even played DI (or whatever its called) in Mass which I know is competitive as fuck. I feel like I could play with him. He was a HB and LB. Maybe I'm just overly competitive and think I could be good at any sport I play. I played 4 growing up; hockey, lax, baseball, and soccer. I guess I just have the mentality that I'd be good at football too. Not trying to call football players out just my opinion. I took a decent amount of shit growing up playing soccer as my main sport, mainly from football players. So im probably biased too. And for the record, my first post was basically about playing in HS, not at the highest level. I think football is more popular here because, yeah we invented it, but also I think more people can play and be good. This may also sound ignorant but I think both sports take a certain level of natural ability. You can't teach hand eye coordination, you just have it or you don't right? Same with soccer. Some people just have a great touch, some don't. Its just my belief soccer takes a little more.

To sum it up, I take back some of what I said. Football takes skill. Soccer takes skill. Its just MY BELIEF that playing football is easier than playing soccer. Both take physical endurance, both take a sharp mind (for the most part). Both are fun and fun to watch (Im one of those psycho's who enjoy watching soccer matches shout out to BVB and Chelsea!)

So you have no experience and are talking about the minority of positions on the field. Completely baseless claims like yours contribute to the mutual dislike between sports.

Always had the same experience. They just get the mentality that they are better than you because football is the "american sport" and therefore is more manly to play. Whatever, I'd like to see a lot of the guys who played football go for 90 minutes + overtime in a midfield position in 100 degree weather without all their breaks every play and all the ass grabbing for "team spirit"

You don't, but its an uninformed polarizing opinion that leads to the kind of discord we are talking about in this thread.

Jameis is extremely intelligent. Seriously that is one of the things that gets talked up most about him. He's just immature.

And depending on the program, very complex. Unless yove played the position, you don't know what its like. Especially at QB.

football is the most chesslike athletic game i've ever come across. And ive played soccer, baseball and football.

Also I always hear the argument that its less exciting because they don't score as much. IMO that makes it 10x as exciting. You are literally on the edge of your seat when after 90 min you have two teams going at it next goal wins, everything riding on one play.

Nothing against soccer its a cool sport, but football is just so much more fun to watch for me. I mean the complexity of the schemes is such an understated part of football. Everybody thinks football is a sport for big dumb retards but world class athletes fail out the sport for not being able to learn the playbook. Sure the athleticism needs to be there but if there isnt wit and toughness you wont do that well.

this. until you actually look into variations between systems you would have no idea how complex football really is. Think about trying to gameplan against a team that runs 3-5, 4-3, 4-2-5, etc. With different blitz combos and coverages for each. Making changes at the line is ridiculously difficult and even HS quarterbacks have to have an extremely strong football knowledge to be good. I would argue that the complexity is far greater than soccer. Not saying that makes it better, just saying that if you are a soccer player you cannot say football is easy to understand if you've never been given a playbook to learn..

Yes, I think the complexity is definitely there, but not the flow and dynamics that soccer has. If you run a play in football you have one job and path to run, unless you're a quarterback or running back and such, and you excute. As a group combined all those paths and jobs create a very advanced set. The difference is that soccer at it's base level is simple, But when I'm playing center back and get the ball, I have hundreds of different things I can do and nothing is set, and the field is also changing. There has to be a lot of though involved with where I place the ball because soccer is like chess. To be successful you always have to be 4 steps ahead of the other team, whereas football your working for that play, or run down the field.

1. Jameis Winston is incredibly smart, he got a full boat to Stanford.

2. HS schemes can be pretty complex, my high school runs a pro style offense that requires the QB to make a lot of reads and change the protection.

Happened to my buddy when we were in high school. His eye was swollen shut for a week and it messed up his vision and made him need to get glasses. He went up to head a ball lobbed into the box and the keeper punched him in the face meaning to punch the ball.

people have probably stated it by now, but just wanted to point out that Winston was offered a full ride to Standford....you don't get offered a full ride to standford if you are stupid.

In the NFL the schemes, plays, formations are insane to wrap your mind around, its a ton of information to retain especially for a QB, you have to know where everyone is going to be.

In high school its basic as fuck. Here is an example from when I played HS QB.

Play call.... "I-right 318 H-sweep on 2"

"I-right" is the formation the team will line up in

"318" is the routes the receivers would run (X, Y, Z WR positions) so in this play X receiver is running a 3 route (slant)...Y is running a 1 route (hitch) and z is running a 8 route (fly route)

"H-sweep" is for the half back to run like he is doing a sweep and the QB will fake the pitch to him.

"on 2" is the snap count.

High school is basic, that is as basic as it gets. If you listen to an NFL QB in the huddle call out a play it sounds like its a paragraph long.

idk, presumably they play against other shitty teams, or just don't care. it's more a matter of making a team or not..

it doesn't matter what sport youre playing, it's only as tough as the people youre playing against. which is part of the reason the "X sport vs Y sport" arguments are so stupid-- if youre talking pro sports that have had time to mature, everyone there is going to be the best the teams can find....so competing in any of them is impressive...

High school is basic, that is as basic as it gets. If you listen to an NFL QB in the huddle call out a play it sounds like its a paragraph long.


Where are you calling the protection?

And thus is barely scratching the surface of what actually is going on from huddle to snap. Play call is easy, checking protections, route adjustments etc based on the defense presnap, then recognizing coverages post snap, knowing player tendencies etc, all while mayhem is happening in front of you is pretty darn difficult.

And that clock to get the ball out doesn't end with a buzzer, it ends with a very angry hit from someone who outweighs you you by 100lbs.

NMMediaAlways had the same experience. They just get the mentality that they are better than you because football is the "american sport" and therefore is more manly to play. Whatever, I'd like to see a lot of the guys who played football go for 90 minutes + overtime in a midfield position in 100 degree weather without all their breaks every play and all the ass grabbing for "team spirit"


Ah, these claims about american football not being tough because of the "breaks" gets old fast. it is just a different kind of physical activity. in american ball its about going 100 percent then a break then 100 percent then a break and so on. for the 90 minutes in the other football its constant moving but not always at 100 percent. My point is that they are both physically demanding and require you to be in good shape, but just in slightly different ways, one is burst and the other is constant run. Dont be like that annoying cross country kid that wears the shirt that says "my sport is your sports punishment".

And yes i know you can say the linemen are fat, but the only guys that are good are the ones that are big AND in shape. The talented linemen are usually more big framed than fat and they can move very well for their size.

Yeah man I feel ya, I don't mean to be a hater since both sports require a lot of skill and slightly different types of athleticism. Its just kinda hard when people shit all over the sport that you have played since you were 3 because its not the "American sport"

i keep hearing that soccer is boring to watch but for me its the exact opposite. i dont think i have or ever will sit through a match of american football.


it goes for like 3 hours. it stops every 3 seconds. you have like 3 teams???? why cant you just get one to do everything like every other sport. it looks like you are about to go into combat with the amount of armour youre wearing. it is the definition of boring.


i understand soccer isnt the toughest game out there, but i highly doubt any nfl athletes would last a full 90 minutes of soccer.


regardless, rugby is still 10x tougher than nfl will ever be.
