Why do some older skiers act so stuck-up?

I have heard so much BS out of them lately...

- Ski patrollers told me that my J Skis were cheap.
- Guy on the lift told me that he was watching my turns and I was "Going way too fast" and I need to learn how to carve better.
- Guy went on a rant about how he hasn't fallen down in 2 seasons, and people who fall down suck at skiing.
- My pants are too baggy
- You aren't supposed to straight-line the moguls

Adults just carve and make fun of people who can't carve as well as them. Who cares if you fall? It means you are actually testing your limits. It seems like some people forget the true meaning of skiing after a certain age. Thoughts?

i just ignore things like that. if im not on the lift with them then i will tell them to fuck off. pretty simple strategy i guess

spray them. mob past them on theyre straight skis going 90mph. hit rails and then stare them down. air off a cat track, get some head bang and after bang in there. ride switch and stare at them. hang your pants down low. throw snowballs at them. i can keep going if you want me to hahahah

I dont think its older skiers, I think that its older douche bags. I hear those kind of people say the same shit about my kids when we ski park because the arent in stretchy pants smashing gates.

I have a very hard time believing the first part. All the patrollers are fairly chill at GP and I doubt they would bash your gear unless you were breaking a rule.

I've actually been trying to figure out this as well.

Since I'm joining the ranks of the 'crusty old guys' - I've been trying to figure out what it is that causes the marginalization of things perceived as 'stupid kid stuff'.

My current theory is that its retaliation to the idea of not being 'cool' anymore - at least in the way you used to be. Its pretty hard to stomach the idea that you get old and aren't rad in the ways you used to be. When you've been the top of the block as a kid, and all of a sudden you're just that weird old guy to those youth - again its just really hard to stomach.

However, you start to become cool in all sorts of new ways. To your colleagues at the office, you might be that super rad skier guy. To the other dads on the field trip with your kid's school, you tell war stories of being out at a ski event and partying all night like you were 21 again. Envy sets in.

The problem is when these things conflict. You see a 17 year old kid being rad in his element, and think to yourself "Shit I was rad like that once, but this kid doesn't get it."

Then I've seen people lead to the logic of "Man I was so dumb when I was 17, this kid must be a fucking idiot. Everything that he thinks is cool is stupid by my new-cool old guy logic."

Take the J-Skis example. It might be easy for an older generation guy to think back to the days when Salomon, Rossignol or K2 ruled the block. They would think "Man, my skis are made by fucking engineers, not some screwball kid in his Garage". Henceforth, feeling threatened by a new ski brand that they don't understand, the easiest thing to do to gain momentary social status would be to try and marginalize the cool factor of a J ski by calling it cheap and only cool because you got sucked into the graphics marketing.

Same idea goes for baggy pants. Instead of thinking its a cool fashion thing, they would just go over how baggy pants are an inefficient form of dress. The youth would then respond by saying 'you just don't get it' - and nobody wins.

Really with inefficient and style-focused dress, every generation has something new. Hell bellbottoms were pretty darn stupid - especially at their peak - but an older generation forgets doing something for just the fuck of it.

Anyway, each generation should be more accepting of all the rest. Never seems to work out like that in the ever-lasting quest for who is the coolest person on the planet.

Ive met a few of these seemingly angry old men in my time as well. That being said I know a few awesome older guys. One guy I worked with was pushin 50 years old and would come out with me and the other park rats to hit jumps. Dude would just send huge kosaks and other oldschool tricks, getting super amped at doing his thing and also getting super amped about what we were doing. Also at my current place of work one of the lift operators is like 60 and drinks beers and smokes weed in the parking lot then just heckles people getting on the lift. And shreds with us when hes not working

Life alert doesn't work on the mountain? If it did they probably would push their limits a little more.

I try not to talk bad about ski patrol, but out of the 20 I see everyday only 4 or 5 are worth talking to. The rest DO NOT speak to the lesser people who work with them. They are above us all.

A lot of older douches out there. That being said...as someone who is in mid to late 20's and has skied since they were 2 with a racer background. I have an issue with kids who grow up in the terrain park who have zero skiing ability besides groomers and rails / jumps. Ruining ski culture among the younger generations

Same here, and I wholeheartedly agree.

Most the pros you kids look up to? They started in racing or moguls. That shit doesn't happen anymore and the fundamentals you learn and respect towards other discliplines is completely lost.

- if i don't fall in a run im not trying hard enough, step up bitch
- your pants don't sag onto your boots? How do you move?
- your mogul skiing is slow, in control, and rhythmic

I think they're just mad that I'm younger, more athletic and can out paddle them on my 5'4 while they're missing waves on a 8' funboard. Same goes for skiing. I turn better, go faster, can do moguls without blowing a knee or whatever and can ski park. They also think they're entitled to waves, or whatever the equivalent is on the hill.

The old age claim/entitlement is stupid. Sorry I wasn't born earlier.

Ive never heard anyone in the park say one of these, or even something similar. Most hate Ive ever heard out of park rats against different kinds of skiers is when someone who shouldn't be in the park because they are a danger to themselves and others is doing something stupid. Also against racers, but thats usually been started by the racers in my experience with them hating on us first.

I get that. Im not saying everyone should be a pro at moguls, steeps, etc...but at least you should be able to carve wtih proper form and ski "well". I know for a fact a lot of older people are bothered by it. Perhaps this is where a lot of the racer arrogance comes from...because most of those kids can shred harder than you and can throw down a great park run

I completely agree with you Matt. Being from the mid-atlantic theres not much more than park laps, unless you want to do 45 seconds runs. Being able to be ski park well requires you to be a good skier in general, be able carve and shred bumps.

Old people are bored and they feel inferior to the younger generations now, even though a lot of them are entitled twats. They hate the fact that a 19 year old college kid can go to school full-time, work part time, and still are able to get a few mid-week days in of skiing, When the older generations had to bust ass, get a degree, and raise a family before they started doing fun things again. Ive had plenty of chair rides where old dudes had a look of "What the fuck are you doing up here today?" on their face.


Good, let em be mad. Makes it just more sweeter when a kid more than half their age is blowing their geriatric asses out of the water.
